Well... Whenever I sleep in Starbound to heal... I think of other things that I could be doing with my life... While I sleep...

I'm pretty sure it's mostly the NSFW half (or, really, 2/3) of the fandom that bothers people. At least, in my experience.

I agree, I never force my fandom down their throats are do hard conversion, I just mainly become open about it and maybe show them some things and help them try it if they want to. Like with the vore convert, I mentioned it in passing in an RP and he said he wanted to give it a try. As for my sister, she got on to furcadia on my computer and got hooked.

 

Well its the part that gets focused on and put into a negative light. That kind of stuff exists in every subculture, just something they use to spread hate.

All fandoms are naturally expansive, there is nothing weird in that. Same with rule 34 side, every fandom has a dark side, from tentacle rape transformation bondage crossdresser otakus to brony cloppers, not to mention those writing Kirk/Spock ship fanfics and whatever. What really makes fandom repulsive to outside is, well, disturbing closeness from something childishly cute to something bestialy perverse. Take a look at DeviantART's section of anthro art for example. For each cute piece of art you get a sexually explicit, even if SFW, one. Furry fandom, pretty much, resembles a physical manifestation of Rule 43, or 15 (no standardized numeration like in case of 63 or 34) to an outsider.

Oh, and, uhm, we're talking about why furries are hated?
1: From what I can tell, the hate has gone down, there is a reasonable number of defenders from outside the fandom, and people within. Both of whom are developing better arguments.
However, this is my impression after joining the community, what, a few months ago? Like 3 (When I applied to this clan)? I've read some old 3-year-old threads that were nothing but anti-furry harassment, and haven't encountered anything like that recently. My sources are just the Escapist website, Reddit, and this forum, so not exactly comprehensive.
2: It makes some sense as to why a lot of people see all furries as a league of fetishists. Sign up to furaffinity and turn off the SFW filter and you'll see plenty. Unlike many fandoms, this one by default (even literally in the case of FA) has NSFW stuff mixed with the SFW. Moderation against it is little, and these sites are so large, and the furry community can seem so small from the outside that some will believe that this is all there is to us. Not realizing that there are quite a few webcomics and artists that are quite popular within the community that contain none of that. As rule 34 implies, every fandom has a dark side, but most of the time it's contained into some small subsection of sites dedicated to the fandom, and not diffused throughout the main pages. Much of this is due to poor organization of furry sites.
3: A quick little tally of art on FA shows that, of 60 works on the browse page, 43 (71%) were SFW, 7 (11%) were Adult, and 9 (15%) were NSFW. This shows that SFW-exclusive furries have plenty of work to choose from. There are several artists who do lots of work that haven't posted any NSFW stuff, TwilightSaint has 743 images, and none of them (Or at least none of the last 500 or the first 100) were Adult or NSFW. the vast majority of which are commisions, so people are paying attention to him (He is an awesome artist, I must say). With 78,000 favorites, 58,000 pageviews, and 14,000 comments, I would say that he's fairly popular in the furry community. There are quite a few like him, too. So SFW-only furries have quite a lot of work to consume, and could sustain a very large amount of the furry population. Hardly a "league of fetishists."
