I think it'd be cool to have writable books that can then be placed or stored in a chest (or maybe in book shelves) and read later. Player created libraries with things like stories, adventure journals, directions, or bestiaries would be very cool, especially in multiplayer.

There's a codex that the player has, which contains any lore they collect. It's possible that you can make your own entries, but I'm not sure.

Even if you could, would you want to, or even be able to, leave it behind? Part of the point of the book would be that you could leave them places or share them.

I'm pretty sure i'd love writing a small story in a book and put it somewhere as a legacy to that I was on that planet. =x Would be afun little thing.

I agree with this, as well as my painting idea. It makes the game that more unique!

I love it. Signs are fine and all, but having writable books/datapads/holopads or whatever would be glorious. I enjoy placing bits of self-created lore and info around, just to entertain myself and others around me. Having these in game would be a considerable improvement over just leaving signs around.

Also in the future, if people start to make things like adventure maps these will be useful. For example, in earlier versions of minecraft in order to show text to the player, you had to make a wall full of signs. This took lots of space but now we have writable books!

Don't forget to have audio recorders for musical entries.

I love the books in Minecraft, and would love to see this implemented in Starbound. Here's a few ideas. Books can be found in Dungeons, and once opened, are added to your codex. Players can print their own books and give/sell them to other players. Each book can be customized (to a degree) such as changing size, color, and format (i.e. Magazines, Novels, Holographic Books, etc.).

In Minecraft, before our server had an awful book-wiping bug, I dug an elaborate labyrinth, and hid chests all over it. Most of the chests were empty or had booby prizes, but some had books with stories, and codes that people could use to claim prizes.

(I used to just leave treasure in the chests, but making the books instead meant that x-rayers couldn't loot the heck out of everything because if they claimed to many codes from me I got suspicious and gave them crappy stuff).

People had a lot of fun with the stories - so much that many of them didn't even want their prizes, they just wanted to let me know they'd found the story and enjoyed it!

As I plan on playing Starbound on a private server with friends (in particular my bestie, who cannot play Minecraft because it makes her seasick) the ability to leave little stories around the place would be even more fun!

Cause i got bored playing Minecraft with a few friends, i crafted myself some books. I then went on to forge stories, making holy texts (Of Warhammer 40K), and so on. So yes, i would love to do that all over again just in Starbound instead.

When books first became available in Minecraft, I always had the habit of making elaborate treasure maps out of them, leading to a treasure that I buried somewhere. Most of the time the treasure chest would be submerged in a pool of lava I made to ensure that only the person reading the clues I left would be able to find and open the treasure.

    Fun times.

This is an awesome idea for those of us who love writing exploration journals.

    this would be nice.

The way I could see it working though is if was saved in a separate file in a separate directory from the characters. Proabably in the default folder that you could see the Universe & Player directories, but labeled Books or Custom Texts, or something along those lines. That being the name of the directory that it would be in. Well one possibility and way to go about it.

If done that way it would be more likely possible that the host would have it saved in that directory. When a client finds or reads the book; it will look for the ID of the book in that directory and save it to the client's own directory; creating a copy of the file so it wouldn't have to reference the host again for the info that the book is composed of.

Unsure though how it would be coded in but that is a rough way to go about it to give an idea of one way that could possibly be done.
