OK Tobias. Lets see what you said:
That is what a preorder is for. A beta is something different in the gaming industry. Or at least was supposed to be before indie games started to "Pre-release" unfiinished games to continue their funding. Not necessarily a bad thing your thinking? It can be. But even if it only generated money for chucklefish that isn't really their style now is it? Some people would rather make a complete a game before releasing it to the public. But as I said before. A preorder wouldn't be a bad thing. And open beta. At least IMO would.

New idea: they have an open beta, with a selected 'bug team' whose job is to send bug reports. This way, everyone's happy.

The halfe of the games that i play aktuelly are betagames.:mwahaha: For me it's not a problem to stumble ofer many bug's and post/mail/ect it to the dev's. So for me, i would love it to have a open beta/pre order for beta. I just only wait that the dev's open a pre-order for the game.*sit always with money for the pc, ready to throw the money to the dev's*:DD

Heres the thing, this is something called a preorder pre-release. Not a bad thing. But it doesn't have anything to do with what a beta should be about.
"everyone's happy" is not necessarily true, because this is true for some games who do this:
People are dumb enough to think its a finished product. When it clearly isn't. This trend, as I said previously IMO started when other indie game companies started charging for pre-releases of their games. This generally created a bad rep for indie games. A beta on the other hand is supposed to be purely about finding and crushing bugs. Not about having people play your game. So, in conclusion, IMO Starbound should have a small closed beta, to prevent leaks, then it should probably have a short preorder pre-release.

To be honest, I've got more than enough games at the moment. I wouldn't have time to play it or to search for bugs.
Plus, I just want to play the finished version of this game, in all its starry glory. If I had more time (and maybe some personal contact with the devs) I would love to bug-hunt to make the game awesome for everyone.

I think I would. I can support the devs with a donation and give them feedback about the game this way.

It kind of does, becuase you said whats wrong with just playing it. But anyway lets get back to the threads original post shall we?

I don't think Starbound should have a public Beta access, to be honest. I think Beta access should be exclusive to a small-ish number of people that would actually contribute to the Beta becoming the final product enjoyable by everyone else, because not every 11 year old that would pre-order a Beta would give their input. I feel like the Beta should be there more as a tool for the developers in their journey to the final product instead of a play-as-we-dev-type thing. I think the game should have a releasable version that will continue to get updated (and that is something that we've been told the developers would be doing for a long time), and not a "okay, we're not done yet, but what do you think?"-type thing available for everyone.

I definitely would purchase for beta access. I like that Path of Exile did this.
