I would, but only for access a week or two before release.
I'll be honest, I can't sit myself down and participate in a beta like other people can.
I'd dick around and then maybe 3 days after encountering something... "Hey, did anyone else see those weird teleporting magma blocks?"

I would preorder, but not because of beta access, so I voted no.

Definately would although I don't think they will be doing this.

It mainly comes down to the fact of closed vs open beta.

with open beta they will get flooded with nigh-useless bug reports even when people actually report things, with a few good ones lost in the mix.
with closed beta they pick people who they think/know will give concise useful bug reports and help them get the game to a truly playable fun state faster, so we can ALL enjoy a less buggy game.

and don't think it will be like Minecraft "beta", which wasn't a beta at all but a game with occasional content updates that was already "finished".
an actual beta means intensive bug testing, playing for the pure reason of writing down how it felt in miticulous detail, etc etc.
WrathPheonix had a post somewhere that put it really well.

I understand that Chucklefish, should they decide to run a beta at all, will be picking the participants out of the active and good forum members; people the devs trust they know what they are doing. Pre-order beta tests are just a way big publishers milk their fans for some extra profit.

I would not pre-order for beta, i would pre order the game but not for a beta. i'd rather just experience the game like a complete noob.

If it was a way to give them money, then yes.
Stupid awesome Devs, making people donate to help other people.

I would pre-order, but only to know that I have already put down funding for the continued advancement of this game. The simple fact is, hand picked beta participants are almost always better at writing clear, detailed, and concise bug reports, while also revealing how the game felt to play as a whole. Would doing a pay-to-play beta earn them more funding? Yes. However, it would also lower the quality of bug reports, while increasing quantity, as others have stated. This does not seem like a worthy trade off to me, this is just my opinion though. We will all see in due time.

Well some people may just but beta to play it and not give feedback it is very unfortunate that is why the will probably hand pick people for beta.

Something that they could do is make it so that every now and then a thing popped up in game asking for bug reports. If you sent in something that wasn't a bug report, they would cut your access. This would be made clear in the terms for getting beta so they couldn't be sued.

I would like to get the beta but at the same time i'd rather have the full game, not knowing a damn thing can make it all the more fun rather than moving from the beta into the full game already knowing a tonne of stuff.

yeah kinda missing the point, its not that it "wouldn't be a bug report" its that it wouldn't be clear enough. but on the other hand with your system people would be afraid to send bug reports lest they get banned.

A closed Beta has a very good purpose, it gets people who:
    1) look for bugs, find bugs, and give good details on how, why, what, and when the bug happened.
    2) reduces the quantity of reports the devs get to a manageable level, which is crucial for a small team.
    3) allows the devs full control over WHO tests it, allowing them to insure the above 2 points.

    meanwhile an open beta:
    1) generates tons of incomplete or nigh-useless bug reports, that are not necessarily "wrong" but simply inconclusive.
    2) overloads the devs with bug reports, more then they could reasonable handle.
    3) takes away the entire element of developer control, and causes the good reports to be swamped in bad.
(Your system wouldn't work for the reason mentioned above)

But what's the problem with that? That doesn't actually hurt the game in any way, and it benefits the team by giving them additional cash resources from the preorder.

Beta is meant for finding glitches and bugs that is the main reason they will have a beta.

I'd preorder but without the beta access. It'll spoil the thrill and I would rather play with everyone else when it releases.

    JoShBr Orbital Explorer

i would pre-order as soon as i could, i'm trying to stop to throw money on the screen even though i know it doesen't do anything ;)

And i mean who would want to wait to play a game like this one? it is going to be revolutionary ( Well it may not start a revolution or anything like that, but,i'm sure it's going to be pretty damn awesome! )

That doesn't conflict with or counter what I just said.

  20. Corrupt Ai

This list sums up quite nicely why an open beta can, and often does, hurt the process. It produces a higher quantity of lower quality bug reports, burying the quality bug reports.
