wood no longer a fuel source?

Dear god just let us use wood for fuel

later in game it has next to no use, and its a helluva lot easier to pump 1000 wood into the fuel tank than it is to find 500 coal

If they wanted to do that, they could:
    1. Make caves more interesting.
    2. Make caves actually worth it.
    3. Not have us spend eons trying to dig through a single block of cobble.

There's a reason no one mines, ore availability isn't it.

well since all the planets in the sector are the same level now, and there is no cost to travel between planets in the same system you can just hit those up now. All planets just became viable, and i can still find plenty of stuff on the surface areas. The ore veins are larger now too.

No, now is 1k coal since coal is 1 unit of fuel now like wood was before

Edit : nope i was wrong seem coal is still 2 units i must have missed read it :p

Not only is coal more common, but since planets of the same tier now all share the same threat level you end up spending much less fuel to explore. The only difference between planets is size and biome, so if you find a planet with a few moons you can end up doing 3-5 planets for very little (it takes 1 fuel to travel between planets in a cluster), and if the star has multiple planet clusters it's only 50 to jump to a new one. Pickaxes seem to mine faster as well, so you should never have trouble grabbing some coal.

I just have to get use to the beta changing all the time :p

It really is a silly and disappointing change. It's nothing that's going to make me stop playing or anything ridiculously hyperbolic like that, but it definitely does diminish enjoyment (which is never a good thing).

I think raw wood as a fuel source was to abundant and made hopping between galaxies way to easy, but at the same time I don't think it should be removed as a fuel source entirely as well, I think the way it should be handled is requiring some type of tool, like building a table saw to cut the wood and then a dehumidification kiln to turn the wood into a fuel source, adding the extra steps of processing and drying the wood would make it less ideal then using coal time wise, so it would give you the option of using coal for a 2:1 ratio which requires no extra tools or time, but is more rare, or you could use wood that is overly abundant but requires a few tools and some time to turn into fuel.

Just a suggestion since getting 1,000 wood and capping your fuel takes little to no effort with how much wood their is, but removing it as a fuel source has its own downsides as well.

Yes, god forbid the game that puts being able to explore a huge number of unique, randomly-generated planets make travel and exploration easy and fun.

i guess someone could always mod it back into the game

I understand where you're coming and I imagine their reason for it is probably because they don't want us to exhaust their content by exploring new worlds by using such a abundant resource. However, in regard to wood not making sense, how much of the world does? There is something kind of fun about popping random things into the fuel line and seeing if it'll work as fuel. As absurd as it was that lumber worked I also thought it was cool that they allowed me to use it. There are a lot of things that don't make sense in Starbound, why make wood the exception to this? I was thinking the other day I might try using that green matter or poo as a potential source of fuel. This is just my opinion, but I do think its fun to think outside the box no matter how zany/unrealistic things might get. I really like the idea someone else mentioned about a tier two device that converts matter to fuel too.

Maybe you should read more then the first 1/2 a sentence before commenting, had you read my entire post you would see that I was pointing out that with raw wood 1:1 being a fuel source there was no reason to use coal 2:1 or plutonium 6:1 (found on meteors) because wood is to plentiful with not much use. I simply said don't not make it a fuel source, just add some steps into turning it into fuel to make coal and plutonium more viable options while still being able to craft abundant amounts of fuel via wood give a few extra steps and tools.

With raw wood as a fuel source, there is zero reason to even have fuel in the game at all, it takes but 5 minutes to fill your tank full if you can use raw wood, with having to process the wood it would take a handful of minutes longer but not to long and it would make it so fuel does matter a bit more then not at all, which is what raw wood makes the fuel into currently is fuel matters not at all.

To be fair, the amounts of coal and ore that now is generated is more than ample to get you around. And already in the beta sector there are serious amounts of uranium if you mine deep enough. I don't think wood as a fuel source is needed anymore.

Coming from GregTech, wood or even coal as a source of fuel for an interstellar spacecraft is a pretty laughable notion. HAHA my spaceship doesn't even have a chimney! The more rogue-like this games becomes - the happier I'll be. I find the thought of getting stranding on a planet for lack of fuel a rather appealing challenge!

Well, I'm not gonna spend hours looking for coal, especially when the mining mechanic is boring and slow as it is. I get angry enough that I have to gather up wood for fuel. I've been playing on the new update for an hour or two, specifically looking for coal and all I've gathered up is about forty pieces. I'll start playing again when they patch wood back as a fuel source.

I think you better find out how to mod it yourself they may not add it back in.

Edit: I don't like wood stop being used as a fuel either but no reason to stop playing the game over. ;)

    I do h
Agreed. Mining is indeed quite dull at the moment.
I think they wanted to get the space thingies down before doing the mining and stuff.

I agree. A space ship running on fossil fuels seems a bit hokey but unless the devs get creative with some futuristic tech, kind of has to be it.

I like how my friend put it, "so you no longer can use trees you can only use thousands of year old dead trees"

but on topic still would like to know if this is a bug or an intentional change.

Also sidenote I don't see if people really want to use wood why it can't use like 5 or more blocks per 1 fuel if people really want to that badly.
