Perhaps this is the last thing they need to finish before beta.

I have a copy of Charles Petzold's CODE that we can use for that.

I wanted to maybe implement something like this in a mod, but I'd probably be a little more logistical about it.

I hope this adds a lot of customization features to our ships. I like the idea of wiring things together to get them to work. Adds a level of strategy and planning to the building of your ship.

Sweet, this is a nice and compact approach to it compared to Terraria and Minecraft's system. Things would just get way too bulky and hiding wiring was a mess. I like the fact that they're using the actual symbols for digital logic gates. This is going to be fun for years upon years.

Requiring a generator does not make the system more flexible. The opposite, actually.

It actually isn't hard to create a system that does the exact same things without actually requiring a generator (use AND gates), and requiring a generator prevents you from being able to create several very simple types of circuits. For example, it is impossible to have a light that only turns ON when the switch it is connected to is turned OFF, because the OFF switch would disconnect the light from the generator. It would also make it impossible to place lights that are always on that are not connected to a power source, forcing you to use torches for those purposes instead, which might not look the way you want. Furthermore, torches would have to eventually burn out because otherwise they would be significantly more useful than electrical lighting that requires resources, and that would be really annoying.

You could say that the object itself has a built-in generator, like you said...
or you could just stop worrying about it because it's a game.

Looks really cool, it'll be nice to have machines running in starbound to make my base snazzy.

What do you plan on using them for?

I'm going to design dungeon rooms with complicated puzzles and traps and add them to the random generator in a mod.

  10. I'll definitely be focusing on home security camera, lights, traps etc. but as of now I'm not sure of much else until we get the game in our hands and see how far we can go with the wiring system.

If security cameras can be used to activate switches, it would be nice to have them automatically open doors and turn on/off lights so that you never need to do so by hand. You could use AND gates to make it so that you can turn the feature off when you are in your trap control room so that other players are slowed down.

Yeah, that would be cool if we could get security cameras or motion detectors to detect our presence only and open a door or activate something else it's wired to. The possibilities!

One of the simplest structures I use in games like Terraria is a 2-door combo leading to inside/outside my base, one behind the other, so you need to cross them both to enter or leave my base.

A pressure plate exists between the two doors, and switches exist on both sides of the doors facing away from each other (so that one switch is inside your house behind the inner door, and the outer one is outside your house in front of the outer door):

The switches, as well as the pressure plate, are all connected to a circuit configuration (exact type dependent on game) so that triggering either one of the switches or the pressure plate changes the OR signal from ON to OFF, and vice versa. The doors are configured to be opened on alternate signals - one should be open when the signal is ON, the other when it is off.

Example diagram - pressing either of the yellow swtiches on the sides, or the yellow pressure plate in the middle, triggers the door setup from the top image to the bottom image, and vice versa:

    inside_outside.png

    This setup has several advantages:
    • Your base is never wide open. At least one closed door always guards the entrance.
    • You never forget to close the door behind you as you leave the base. After you open the inner door using the inner switch, you continue running towards the second door, triggering the pressure plate, which opens the door in front of you while simultaneously shutting the door behind you. That means your NPCs don't escape the house right after you (although it can be hassle to let them in/out manually if you want to).
    • Similar to previous point, you never forget locking the door behind you as you enter the base.
    • Even for the brief moment you are in process of entering/leaving base, at least one door is closed (either the one behind you, or the one in front of you). That means that if you are chased by monsters into your house, you can be sure the door auto-locks after you as you run in, leaving the hordes of angry mobs at the gates.
    • The total amount of clicks needed to enter or leave base is only one (because the pressure plate between the doors is triggered automatically as you run over it), meaning there are no extra clicks compared to just having one door and opening/closing it.
    • In a nutshell: this setup keeps NPCs IN, and monsters OUT.
Note - all of this assumes, of course, that monsters can't press switches. Otherwise we need to be getting into lock/key mechanisms.

Luckily the new Terraria update took care of that with switches only triggered by players

I wonder how PvP & Wires will coexist...? Will PvP foes be able to just snip your Wires as they go & defeat the point of your Traps like was possible in Terraria...?

you just need to be more creative in your traps!

i wouldn't say that is a good thing, it just limits what you can do for automated defenses.

Not really, some of pressure plates in fact are only triggered by both PCs / NPCs or just NPCs, too.

There has been occasional whispering of potentially having PvP arenas found on special asteroids. If so, the arena itself could have Dungeon Protection so you can't dig up the blocks, or just disable the wire menu. I would really like this to happen, and I'd also really like it if you could protect your own base with something like that. Sure, there are always server mods and stuff to protect people's creations, but it would be nice if those weren't necessary. Hopefully Chucklefish will come up with something that works really nicely.

That is epic... I could only wish I was that clever...

I remember that talk about Arena Asteroids... I was thinking more along the lines of Territorial Defense of one's own Homeworld... ;)
