It could well be old news, but I never saw anything on the forum or wiki about it. As the Internet wisdom goes, "pics or it didn't happen". ;)

He may be referring to the little bit of wiring that was showcased in the building demonstration video that was posted awhile ago.

    Here @1:28

And to answer the question bludud it was pretty much the same bart was just working on logic gates to incorporate into the wiring.

GREAT! Another thing that I will never understand and/or learn to use, like redstone in minecraft, that thing just blows up my mind!
Still great to see this stuff being in game already, I am sure people will come up with crazy stuff using something like this.

Sweet, I had no idea that this was in-game at this point in time! Pretty excited because I loved making stuff with the wiring in Terraria.

I can't wait to wire 100 doors to open and close to drive people insane...I mean for science and the good of mankind.

Combine that with ability to tame/breed/genemod captured species (not sure if for Beta, but was discussed as an eventual feature) and you can have a crazy automated farm, maze, or dungeon for your minions.

    Cool, didn't spot it.

I agree. Probably the earlier video just had a visual proof of concept, and only now Bartwe implemented the actual logic.

Screw that, Renewable Clean Resources like Solar Power FTW!

I wonder if it'll be possible to wire stuff together that's more than 1-2 Screens apart with a single Wire?

I was the same with redstone in minecraft for a long time. But then I tried it out and now the game is boring without it . You should look some stuff up on youtube and try it out. Then tweak it to change how it works. Because this game is 2d it makes things a lot easier so there's no reason not to test it out and see what you can come up with :)

Thankfully this seems a lot easier to use than the cursed redstone.

Reminds me a little of the Little Big Planet logic system which turned out to be amazingly simple but capable of complex results. (Like the guy who made a working competitive AI Tic-Tac-Toe game. The developers even put it up in the developers choice section with the description "We aren't sure how he did this, but it's cool")

Based on today's stream, it seems that switches also act as generators. E.g. when you turn on a lever, it actually provides the power, not just allows it to pass.

I think that's how Terraria did it. On the other hand, Edge of Space takes a more realistic approach where you need a power generator to serve as the initial power source (of which there are several, each providing a limited amount of power outputs), and only then can you run the generator through a switch if you want to be able to toggle that output on an off. Much like a real life switch, which merely breaks/unbreaks a power circuit, rather than generate power on its own.

Here's an example of how Edge of Space manages power:

More info on the EoS wiki guide.

How far Starbound will take it remains to be seen. Perhaps it's still work in progress, or perhaps Starbound just opted for a more simplistic style, having decided that power management is not what the game is about, and thus a simplicity is more important than realism.

"Looks complicated! I don't want to mess with it!"

Oh really? Linking to switch into a console, then linking that console to a door so that both switches need to be on for the door to open, that sounds complicated? Minecraft was complicated because instead of placed consoles that performed the function of each gate you have to construct the gates out of simple on/off wires and torches. These consoles make is so much easier that I don't think anyone has an excuse not to use them. Not that anyone is forcing you, it's just way easier.

One of my biggest hopes is that the mechanism/logic/wiring whatever system ends up being very simple yet deep and various. I had a hard time understanding the system in games like Minecraft and Little Big Planet 2, but Terraria is easy and still had decent choices.

I just hope we'll have many traps and other base machinery relying on these systems...

Damn...this game is actually going to consume my life. People use this often, kinda like how "I love you" is overused, but this time is actually for real. Starbound is going to make me want to have sexual relations with the computer screen.

With regards to the "switch providing power" vs "dedicated power source", I suppose you could argue that Starbound's version is a power generator with built-in switch... Although admittedly, that makes it less flexible.

When I found out that, in LittleBigPlanet 2, if you connected a NOT gate's output to its own input, it started flickering really fast because it was inverting itself constantly.
Therefore, if it was ON it became OFF and vice-versa.
I hope I can do that in Starbound too. Rave lights :DD
