Will we be able to "build" villages like in Terraria?

That is probably one of my big favorite features in Terraria. Starting off in an old abandoned cave and slowly expanding everything into a big bustling little village filled with people. I really like what they're doing with NPCs in the game, and I'm hoping we can build our own villages and cities and then have people eventually come live in those rooms.

even if those NPCs don't actually do much, I'd still really enjoy that. Don't know if anyone has heard an answer to this already

I don't think we've heard anything like this yet. Honestly the terraria NPC system always annoyed me, so I don't care if it's not here, as long I can get the same services (item shops, mainly) from town NPCs.

maybe some villagers would reward you for building the village and offer lower prices on items. that would be sweet.

  4. Are you talking about Terraria or Starbound?
I'm seriously confused right now :V

The title is indeed confusing, I was wondering what a thread about terraria is doing here.
But I get the point. I don't know, building alot of rooms just so they can be empty doesn't feel right. The reason I started building this huge something above my original small house was because I knew I have to have room for NPCs to come in (http://i.imgur.com/vW2s5Sc.png). If there would be nobody comming, I would just stick with the original small wooden shelter through the whole game and maybe after that I'd build something big, just because...
So I'd personaly love a reason for making big buildings and/or villages other than "there is alot to build with".
Of course if you are playing with friends it's always fun to build something huge for no reason but I am the kind of player that's enjoying to play alone, I always feel like I am slowing everybody down with my playstyle, especially in RPGs and these kinds of games. I played terraria for 30 hours and I am still not in hardmode so that's why, I am just in no rush.

One gripe I have with Minecraft, and its plethora of clones, is how there isn't any incentive (at least for me) to build large mega structures, be it castles or underground bunkers. You see, the one thing I like about these block games is that you can build things with great details but the problem I have with them is that all said those things you build are useless. You can build castles, fallout shelters, under water cities, megalithic farms and a whole bunch of other crap but at the end of the day all those structures only serve yourself. In Terraria at least you have NPCs to take care of that are actually, in most cases, a benefit to you if kept alive. I wish that in Starbound, be it in the Beta or later updates, that a player after landing on the a planet of his/her choosing can essentially build a civilization, from a small colony outpost to Skyscrapers that pierce the stratosphere.

    TL;DR
In other words, I want the game to have reasons to build this..... tumblr_mdvx0vmO1g1qkm02zo1_1280.jpg

that doesn't solely involve people wanting to upload them to this website and YouTube just for us to look at. Aesthetics are fine but they only get you so far. I wanna make cities, not art pieces.................

That's actually what I ment. I once started with building this huge castle in minecraft but I never finished it, because there were no point for it.
At least maps for people to play were enjoyable to build but that was kind of it. As you said, I want to have a reason to build something huge in my own singleplayer world.

I always felt that the npc's in Terraria were mooching room mates. Not townspeople paying taxes. Now if the guide started paying rent I wouldn't have killed him so many times.
There will probrably be a little larger amount of NPC's on your homeworld than in Terraria.

I seem to remember that we'd be able to find NPCs across worlds and actually relocate them via our ship to our homeworld and create a community that way. It was a very long time ago (I'm thinking along the lines of at least 9ish months ago) that I remember reading this, so take my memory with a grain of salt.

I do like the idea to creating a small city, assigning npcs to certain positions as guards, perhaps even miners and treasure hunters and after a while, they could give you something they have found, like ores or other items.

ahhh, actually I might remember something like that too a really long time ago. It must have been something along those lines. Yeah, that'd be great. Along with
    this too.

I was just about to say the same thing, it was also in one of the DEV play video's I think, but I remember the same thing...do you know how hard it is to pick up 1 grain of salt?
I thinkit would be nice to, not only relocate them to your world, but if they die, you dont get the clone of "Fred the guide" who looks the same and is named "marcus the guide" instead get an entirely new guide, maybe even strand an irritating NPC and go get a new one?

Oh my, this sounds like a fun suggestion. Someone else suggested (in the last daily update) it would be fun to be able to hire guards and kit them out with equipment so they could defend your base (also a good way to use up old equipment that you've outgrown), it would also be fantastic to be able to have 'civilians' to house and add interest to your home and give a reason for building and decorating all those 342 rooms and 112 bathrooms. It's one of the things I really enjoyed about Terraria (even if their NPC pathing, even in the new release, is really really really stupid, leading to much frustration).

Maybe after completing a quest for a 'homeless' NPC they could say to you "I'm sick of wandering the galaxy. Maybe I could help out on your home planet?" and you would then have the option of saying yes or no (Yes would hopefully just teleport them to your home world, because having to lead all of them home would be really annoying.)

You could then choose what sorts of NPCs you want populating your home. Maybe some would have different store options, some would help grow cool plants if you put garden beds within a certain distance of their home 'room'. Definitely something that would add a lot of fun to the game! .... arghhh my pancakes are burning - gotta go!

If this is not already in game it should be added. Although I do have to agree that it would be slot better if the npc paid rent to you. Maybe some sort of landlord mechanic where you have to balance out the cost of rent with the quality of house (size, block type and vanity items) and the amount of income the npc is making so they don't emigrate.(The pay would also be decided by so you could have guards but never have to pay them if the rent was perfectly balanced out and they were happy and meeting all their needs)

YES THIS, give me many NPC's, not just a small group of shopkeepers.

I want to build a sprawling city or underground base filled with various races with various skills. (Like an engineers quarter where I can park my mech)

This is pretty much the only non-confirmed feature that I would be really sad to hear isn't gonna be in the game.
