I really hate Steam. If Starbound will cost about 20$ on Steam - i would totally pay the double price for a standalone game, without Steam or any of its kind.
I doubt i would buy it on Steam if its only available there.
Every Platform like Steam, Origin, etc. has only disadvantages for me as i manly play solo or rarely LAN.

I Love Minecraft for what they did with the recent Update - where you can play MC in LAN (even without a Server as the Gameclient itself is the server). And i hope Starbound could do something similar ...

So, i dont want to Flame Steam here , all i want to say is i would be very luky if they would do a Standalone Version too. I would pay up to 40€ for this.

And sorry for my bad english skills.

What's so bad about steam? They give u great deals of games unlike buying console games.(well sometimes they are sales but not as much as steam)

There's going to be a steam version, and a non-steam version.
Angelus, what's so bad about steam? Firstly, the platform itself is free, the only thing you pay for are the games, and they support many F2P ones. And those summer sales... they can't be beat. What's so bad?

The only thing I hate about Steam is downloading the games, my internet is slow and takes forever to download. I see nothing wrong with Steam, it's easier to communicate and cheaper to buy games.

is this official, i could not find this in the faq?

My problems with steam are the usual one, i am sure you read them a million times before.
a game wich costs 49$ costs 49€ where i live, thats not my main problem - but it seems to be quite unfair
most games are "directors cut". hey! i am 30 years old, i think i should be able to get the normal edition of every game and not the ones with the cut content
there is the necessity of beeing online, even in singleplayer and offline games. as i have a very weak internet connection at home, it takes days to download games and hours for most patches (even if i dont want to have the patches) and thats my main reason

its the same thing like actiblizz did to diablo3, you are forced to play online, even if its a singleplayer game - but the main problem is that steam is one of those portals which justified this procedure. if steam would not have this success, a pest like origin, etc. would not have happend. they have to much control of somehing you buy. my girlfriend brought dungeon defenders on steam and she got VAC banned - i tried to help her and send a email to steam, asking why the banned this account. i even asked to show the data to proof that my gf cheated or did something to legitimate the VAC. the reply was simply "No!", they wont show anything and the dont argue ... here in germany we have the right to see all data connected to an owned account given by act of law. but as its not a german company we where simply fucked. as you might have noticed, i am pretty pissed to, because i could not help her, and this is very sad as i know she didnt do anything wrong, because i installed everything on her computer (shes not even capable of installing something her own ^^).

No you don't. There isn't a single game on Steam that requires you to be online to play unless the game itself requires it (Like many UbiSoft games). You only have to be online to activate it. But that's no different from a game you buy away from Steam either.

I think you have great misconceptions of the Steam service, unless it works differently in your country than in the US.

    Alright, let's go through this.

Yes its unfair, however Starbound will cost 10-15, not 49.

Age is irrelevant, and there will be no "cut content" version as far as I know.

There is no requirement to be online to play.

    This "procedure" doesn't exist.

There are always imitators of successful things, its hardly Steam's fault.

Yeah that sucks, but its also irrelevant to Starbound being on Steam.

It stinks how you need internet connection to start steam. If Starbound was on Steam, i would need to be in my house to start playing it. It even said so in the Steam Q & A

good to know ^^ (after two years)
thats leading to another thing i did not like about steam - the support, the only answers i have got when asking something where ill-prepared answers which made clear my question was barely read.
you gave me better steam support in 30 minutes than steam gave me in one week :D

Steam would be the best place to release Starbound, yes. Since a lot of games nowadays are by default attached to Steam (the games which are also being sold on CD), there's not really a platform out there which would be better choice than Steam, also because it's the most popular one.
And the price.. It'll be more expensive than Terraria for sure, but that's everything I know but probably everything you guys know as well for so far. :)

OMG. Centuries I have been looking for a solution to that problem. As thanks, here's the Internet. It'll come in handy, for sure.

Hello, I'd like to add that Valve doesn't decide the pricing of a game in EU and US. The devs do. For example in Europe Half-life is 7,99€ and Half-Life 2 is 6,99€. In the US both games are $9.99. So we should probably ask Tiy or someone else if they are considering a different price for Europe.

It kind of does. If you buy Starbound on Steam, and later your account gets banned (sometimes this can occur through no fault of your own, by the way), you can no longer play your copy of Starbound as it as the license is tied to your account.

Sure there are workarounds for certain internet users (see also: pirates), but the fact that one company can revoke your access to content you have spent possibly hundreds of dollars on is hard to ignore. Throw in the fact they are not obligated to tell you why you were banned, do not need a reason to ban you, and do not refund any money spent on their service, and how can you not see that as a problem?

When you buy a game on Steam, you buy a "license" to use the software. While Steam has its positive attributes, this practice would be a deal-breaker for me, if some games weren't Steam-exclusive. I would much prefer a GOG release over Steam, and I would at least like to have a non-steam option on launch.

You can still play locally, over a LAN, and on anything that isn't VAC secured; so unless the only way to host a multiplayer server is through a VAC secured valve server then there isn't much of a problem really.
