Will there be multiple evolutions a monster?

    So far all that's been confirmed is a single evolution. Will there be evolutions that branch out like a possibility of 2 evolutions per monster, or more than one evolution? Maybe even having different evolutions based on the type of biome the monster is in? It would be a nice feature to have.

    While it would be interesting to see creatures adapt to their environments, that sounds like an absolute bitch to code for every single biome and planet possibility... Making each creature adapt to just the colour pallet of a biome dosent sound too hard however....

    But from what I can tell, it looks like the "evolutions" are just the younger versions of creatires growing into the mature ones. The young ones seem to exist only to allow for taming purposes.

    This could be the basis for an interesting way to see new life emerge on a planet over time. The longer a server / game lasts, the more likely that a given planet's fauna will experience a change. For the purposes of Starbound, that could just be using a different head model, different arms, a change in attack patterns or aggressiveness, etc. Throwing some RNG into the mix with this would be pretty sweet.

    Edit: Basically echoing what Evithlia said

    Eh, as long as they all don't turn out like Eevee did, I'm pretty sure evolutions shouldn't be too hard to do.

  6. This is pretty interesting possibility.

    That question splits by two parts to me:
    1. How many "Tiers" of Evolution are there?
    2. Is there any different (alternative) evolutions?
    Possible answers (IMHO):
    1. Maybe infinite. Let's see: Developers have promised to us regular updates post-release. So adding new tiers of monsters evolution would be pretty easy. I'm humbly hoping for at least 3-4 "levels".
    2. We don't know. How I see the mechanics: creature's evolution is based on the "parts" evolution. Each part (head, body, legs, etc.) have two (or more, see above) stages of development. So it's not impossible that some (or all) of those parts could have more than one form on certain stage. Also if the parts gives certain abilities to creature they may vary as well. The variations may appear randomly, or depending of some environmental factor, or even based on creature's "genotype" which is totally or partially hidden from a player. Yes I'm aware of the fact that it's may be pretty hard to code, but think on the possibilities!

    This has kinda been answered by Tiy through explaining evolution was just them growing up as we catch them while they are young basically.

    That said: As a future addition it might be possible. What you have to consider though is every monster part now has to probably have a 'young' sprite drawn of it. Another "evolution" for everything, would probably add hundreds of sprites. Four stages would add thousands. So it goes.. at least I am guessing it probably does.

    So a multiple evolution/ multi stage growth probably isn't going to happen, and if it does its not likely 'till after release.

    Using the words "monster evolution" may have been a bad choice of words on Tiy's part. He's thinking of how a creature changes in the game mechanics as it goes from a baby to an adult.

    Wot I think:
    Upon Beta / Game Release - Creature raising, maybe breeding and MAYBE genetic manipulation via machines and/or tools we build. Maybe.

    Post Release:
    Don't forget, they're still going to work on Starbound well after it's official release. It's their flagship project, after all. Considering how popular Pokemon type mechanics are.... well, who knows. We'll just have to cross that bridge when we get there.

    If there are more then one evolution, then I would bet money that people will RP as if it were pokemon on a starbound server.

    I just saw the evolution monster post, and have a question that no one knows the definitive answer to, but I'll ask anyways.

    The two different stages of each particular monster shown in the examples are similar but slightly different. Does this mean that the artists are going to have to go back and create a second version of every single random part in the monster generator?

    Suckers bet. :p Honestly? If its easy enough to add parts and tie them into monsters as Tiy said modding would be easy? People probably will probably start a mod project the first day to throw in the first 151 pokemon in 2D.

    Minecraft, Doom, I'm honestly surprised Terarria escaped unscathed/modded. (To my knowledge.)

    i have two conflicting thoughts on this

    A ) This is not Pokemon
    B ) Multiple evolution options would be AWESOME

    i think its going to be less evolution/change and more, child growing to adult

    less A -> B -> Ca/Cb
    more a -> A

    I don't want multiple evolutions for monsters that don't need it, like I don't want ten evolutions so a cow can grow horns, but having a few evolutions for the mobs that work with them is great.
