Will the Forum Run a Server?

Personally I don't like using steam... But that's just my opinion.

 

It'd be a hassle to manage and moderate.

Also, the criteria for the whitelist is biased; if you have to achieve a certain title, you can do certain... illicit activities just to join.

 

Well how a server or a series of servers is handled is very likely going to depend on the server tools and options for the admins and players made available at launch.

 

Yeah, having a forum server is a bit realistic, although it would be cool.

 

There are over 8000 members on these forums.
Obviously not all of them would want to join but it's still a ton of people...

I could see some of the forum guilds hosting servers for members though.
That's all up to the players of course.

Yes, it is quite a shame that we have such little technology in real life. Hopefully in the future server running will become easy enough for even great servers to be cheap.

 

But hey, maybe makin a server will be like, super easy and not as complicated as minecraft/Terraria.

 

There's still the issues of having too many people, and organizing/moderating those people on-server.

 

A server for nearly 10,000 people? You would need alot of moderators to keep griefing off and settling fights/flame wars between players, i don't think someone could manage a server that can hold 10k players (or more, depending on how popular Starbound is when it's released) all at once.

 

Obviously not 10,000 people would be playing the server.
I mean seriously, how many of the 8000 forum members are actually active on the forums? Not many. I always run into the same few people on the forums.

 

It would be lovely but, Imagine how much bandwidth connecting to 10,000+ players would be for the players, let alone Tiy...

Starbound will have a server for the character files but not a dedicated server for hosting. :/

Edit: i did a very quick (and probably inaccurate) estimation of the active users, my conclusion was ~3000 users.

I did the formula again using a 4 instead of a 3 and average it out to get Approx. 3000

urgh, no way, theres just WAAAAAAY too many flaws for something like that to work, just get people to make there own servers or steam groups dedicated to servers

But anyways, I guess a server run by the forum is a badish idea... But a small server with a very difficult to get into white-list could work, right?

I kinda think a server for all of the forums Is a server begging to be griefed.
It would be a nightmare.

 

I could see multiple sets of servers based around groups and sections of the fora. I could see three or for different types of servers popping up for forum sections. Like the Pvp, pve, clan war , creative etc servers.

 

Hmm, I didn't realize that when people get angry, things don't work. I guess where you come from, everyone has control over the force and can smash everything they don't like.

 

actually its true that when everyone gets angry things dont work, i mean, just look at terraria online when that little announcement was made eh?

and i'll take that as a compliment, scottish people using the force sounds rather hilarious
