Will Starbound have tutorials or is "every man for himself"?

I kind of liked having the tutorial be contained within the guide. Maybe have something similar to the guide, but just a little more useful

If there is a tutorial it should teach the basics and then sort of leave you to find all the subtleties that increase the ease of doing something and gives the user a sense of progression; also rather than having a boring text filled tutorial.

like a hitchhiker guide to the galaxy? i approve.

  4. If there is an Guide NPC, it should be something decent, not random texts... The Terraria one when came wasn't even possible to see craft recipes o_O.

Personally, I love tutorials, especially when they are well made. Should Starbound include tutorials ? Yes. What forms should it take ? Same as Project Zomboid.
For those who didn't played Project Zomboid, the tutorial gives you some basic advice about what you should do (Like bandaging a leg, finding and cooking food, etc). However, in one of the nearby containers, there's an item that allows you to end the tutorial so you can play immediately.
Another way I think is appropriate to give info and advice would be to hide clues in chests and other hidden places, in forms of books, written paper sheets, journals, research notes, mad scientist discoveries, etc. That would allow explorers to discover "legitimately" some features of the game.
Concerning the "No tutorial" debate, I have to say I've played one game, Lord of the Rings online. I've stopped it because it has 2 major flaws. The first flaw is that the shop is everywhere, and the second flaw is that almost nothing is explained. You have to discover many things by yourself or look it up on the web. For a MMORPG, this is not good. For example, you can't access instances until you're level 20. I know this because one of my friends told me so, but otherwise I'd just have admitted there was a bug because if you clicked on the guy who gives you those missions there isn't any tooltip, any message, anything, no reaction at all. Same thing for the hope/fear system, nothing is explained about that, only a little icon is shown. Same thing for many many many other features, actually most of them. I'll be clear on that : it's not the "by myself" part that bothers me but the "have to" part. Forcing a tutorial is not worse than not having one at all imo.

Are you talking about earlier versions ? The Guide can see every recipe in the game - jut show him an item and he'll tell you every single item you can craft with it.

  6. Well, I didn't noticed any of that till 1.1, maybe just because I always played searching wiki for recipes, never noticed that on guide that with the items showed recipes. It's something that just there wasn't any info or pointer then I was playing the hard way for almost a year.

I'm not any noob, but I just didn't imagined that one.

From the wiki, it seems that he has this functionality since 1.0.5. I've used the wiki to discover some recipes too, but I mainly refer to him, especially because it's handy to see what I do need to craft this potion in-game.

Yes, it kicked in during the first big update in August of 2011. (the brewing/furniture update)

I kinda like what they did in planet explorers. I'm pretty sure starbound will have a similar system.

For those who haven't played (the free alpha) of planet explorers yet, it basically sends you on a few fetch quests and tells you to create stuff. Crafting stuff is fairly simple. There's a recipe and a printer/fabricator. If you got the recipe you can make the thing. Just click it and if you have the needed materials you can craft.

Besides that... all you need to know is where to point to shoot and how to use the quickbar. :D

Tutorials - Meh. I will learn on my own. It won't be that hard (at the beginning)

My thought exactly when I saw that quote from Tiy. Best of both worlds.

Dwarf Fortress didn't have any tutorials! (alright, it has a manual, but it's largely out-dated and vague)

I'll be frank: Minecraft was the least new-player friendly game I have ever played. All it tells you is "press e to open inventory". Without any kind of introduction, it just strands you. My English teacher would die.

Well, I haven't played Minecraft or Terraria so I don't know much about crafting etc. I like to learn how to play, it's also fun for me to do everything alone, but I think Starbound should have tutorial, it would help.

    A very simple tutorial.

I want to learn everything I can on my own. This is how I did it with Terraria and everything was so much rewarding.

Doesn't hurt to have an optional tutorial NPC like ''Guide'' was.

I think the only things that tutorials are ever good for though are for the not-so-basic mechanics; e.g. crafting systems. I don't need to know how to move, or jump, etc.
