Will Starbound have tutorials or is "every man for himself"?

You could talk to the gude and he opened a crafting window which you could put items in and he would tell you the recipes. I don't know if this was in an update after you quit playing but it is very nice to know what you else you need to craft a new item.

This was added a while after release.

I think it came in the 1.1 update...

  4. I supose it was when the game launched. Still at first very confusing, the good thing was to see the items it created with that material.
The Bad thing... Was finding the right Craft Station to build the item! Sigh...

No, the guide actually tells you that too, at least now. It's not that appearent though...

  6. It does? Where? O___________o
    Years playing and ... :scissors:

Lots of mixed opinions on this topic, it's nice to see so much diversity on the forums all the time on multiple different topics! :DD

    On Topic:
Tutorials are risky things, sometimes they are needed and other times they are not. A lot of games give either too much of a tutorial, or too little. For Starbound, I think that it would be very beneficial to have some form of a tutorial that runs the first time you make a character. This would include the basics (movement, how to navigate the game, crafting, how to start *insert whatever here*, etc.) and maybe some slight advanced tips, but after that everything should be left up to the players to discover, especially in an open sandbox game like Starbound.

    On Terraria:
Though it did not have a tutorial when it first launched, nor a form of tutorial still, the Guide used cryptic messages to help the players along in the beginning, and after the implementation of being able to 'show' the guide an ingredient or item, he was able to tell you what you could make out of that one item and what else you would require to build it. So in a sense, Terraria had a built in building guide, which was really all that was required for the player. Everything else in the game you were able to find out on your own fairly easily.

    *EDIT*
I didn't notice the amount of people that talked about the guide until after I posted this. My reading skills need an upgrade me thinks.

If you don't hover directly over the item you are going to craft, but move your pointer away from it, it will display the required crafting station instead of the required materials ;)

EDIT: Also this is highly off-topic... Resume the discussion about tutorials!

  9. The Things an "?" Button would make for me! All this time going to the wiki for craft every item I didn't know the station....

    Tutorials are annoying.
I'd still rather have a short manual than any tutorial. I want to be immersed as soon as possible.

  11. Manual is the same was tutorial, only thing tutorial is interactive. :)

But how can you immerse yourself fully if you don't know all of the basic controls and mechanics? Some of them might not be that apparent. Also, through this discussion, I think that the general opinion is that there should be some kind of introduction or tutorial, but it should be optional ;)

That's why you look at the first page of the manual!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But... Where would you find this manual? In-game? The menu?

    I don't know.
But I miss taking 20 seconds to look at the manual as opposed to 3 minutes of lame tutorial.

I really wish we would start talking about an optional tutorial specifically. A mandatory tutorial is just bad practice and is going to garner nothing but hatred from the people who "don't want to be spoon fed." Fairly certain the response would be much more positive because of that one addition.

Otherwise, you make the gung-ho "We don't need no directions" manly-men angry.

  17. Most games with in recent times makes this:
    - You Start playing in the game itself, but as you play the first times it will give you some Hints or Tooltips as you advance, and the things are going to be needed. When you reach for example and craft menu, or inventory, or skills, it will explain that to you, the first time you go there, after that where is an "Manual" Yes, that you open, where everything of that is archived for consult when needed.

    Good things about that:
    - It's immersible, it's natural and most important, it let you focus more in the game itself instead trying to figure how things work. :)

...Or you could just figure it out yourself. Like I did. Got my money's worth, yes I did.

'Cause, you see, there's lots of people that figured it out just so that they could put it on the Wiki. It's possible. Dare I say, it wasn't difficult. You just had to want to find out (not read: "had to want to be told").

  19. Is the game about figuring it out how to play it and every mechanic, or about play it?

You don't need an actual tutorial if you know what you are doing.

You just have to make the game teach the player without telling them like tutorials do.

Make the player crash on a planet after escaping, then make them discover the stuff step by step. Basic crafting, digging, etc. Some NPC to ask if you have doubts about something and done. A tutorial in the game disguised as normal gameplay, and nobody notices.
