    will STARBOUND have retina support?

  2. Do you mean hi-def displays?

But it's pixel-styled game, it SHOULD look like pixel-art:wtf:
What is the purpose of retina then?

Agreed, what would be the purpose of retina if it's a pixelized game?

As we've seen in the streams, Starbound supports zooming so you should be able to play at your preferred level of pixellation.

im not sure why would the game need support for that, its very design would not make it work.

it would be like watching an old show from the 50s on an HD tv, the images wont look better

i have no idea what that means,
but my retinas support almost all wavelenths of the visible spectrum of light

Guess its time for a google search on what "retina support" means.

EDIT: turns out apple coined it and it doesnt really mean anything,
In other words apple made a word for marketing.

according to them however it means that the human eye cant see individual pixels
which is not backed up by them with any research,
they can also change the meaning at will.
Why does it matter in a pixelated game?

Didn't really understand this so did a quick search and found a wikipedia article. It says there:
"Retina Display is a brand name used by Apple for liquid crystal displays which they claim have a high enough pixel density that the human eye is unable to notice pixelation at a typical viewing distance."
In other words- stand far enough from your monitor and you have retina support :bbb
Couldn't they just say that their product has very small pixels? Apple is getting more ridiculous with its ideas and patent claims every year. Ridiculous and sometimes scary, when the patent office acknowledges some of the stuff.

According to apple its only a retina screen if you cannot see the pixels at a normal distance.
however that literally means nothing, you could say its normal to watch your tv from several Km away
in which case my gameboy has a retina screen.

Yarp, you are quite right my friend.

Retina means different things for different devices, so for your iphone the distance is shorter than for your ipad. It's mainly just some marketing term, because there isn't a standard to what distance you stop seeing pixels, it's whatever Apple says it is. Given that this game is being made for computers, I'm going to say that you'll most likely be able to set it to your monitors native resolution in fullscreen mode. Heck, I seem to remember hearing something about eyefininty support which means it's a fairly safe bet there will be resolutions past 1080.

  11. It can't be 'retina', you're supposed to see the pixels.

If he want's to play starbound half way down the street thats his own choice,
granted it may make the game a wee bit unplayable but who are we to judge?

I guess it depends about which pixels we're talking about here ;)
The "pixel" blocks making up the characters are made out of many (depending on resolution and zoom) actual pixels.

maybe the OP is simply uninformed or mixed up and meant support for high definition set-up ?

Every single block is made up of the same qauntity of pixels.
Look at my image, each block contains 9 pixels i think.
Can you see the individual pixels?
probably not because they are all the same colour, all you can see is the groups of 9.
so an example of a retina screen is the small portion of your screen containing my image:rofl:

Just got a new monitor after my faithful Samsung of 4 years decided to give up the ghost. Now it's glorious 2560x1440 all the way!

@WorldOfSven , I’d bet @StarboundGame looks pretty damn sexy on that thing :)

    Stephen Alexander ā€@WorldOfSven
@SeanHerczku It does actually! It really makes the worlds feel larger when I can see so much further into the distance. :p

i just thought id take the time to say, my monitor is rubbish:)
And i hope that this is relevant.

Considering apple says retina displays are just really fine pixel displays I'd be somewhat amazed if you could 'support' them at all. I mean the only thing the software could do to support that or go against it would be to either be pixelated or not.

So I guess the answer is no, technically, Starbound is designed to look like an old pixel game (albeit a lot prettier than the old fixed palette, low memory eras).

I wouldn't put a lot of faith in anything apple says anyway. Their whole business model revolves around marketing and not a lot else.

That and I can set my screen to 1400+ pixels across and get a finer picture than I would at 600 across anyway. As is I can't see the pixels on my normal PC screen.

Retina displays automatically 'support' everything, silly goose. In your case, the pixelated style of the textures in game will be really crisp. But if you want to change the look of the game then SHAME ON YOU SIR.

"Retina Display" is really just Apple's way of rebranding old technology that hadn't quite made the mainstream when it was introduced a decade ago. Back when graphics cards weren't quite able to meet the demands of a high resolution screen, especially not on laptops. Today we have exceeded that limitation and are seeing a reintroduction of high-density displays.

It's kind of like how Apple "invented" the tablet PC. All they did was copy technology that didn't quite take hold nigh a decade ago.
