Will starbound be a game defined by god awful grinding?

I don't see squat about mining. As a matter of fact, searching the About page linked above for mine, mining, ores provides a grand total of

    ZERO RESULTS.

Um, it's because you said Mining and Exploring caves are the pillars of the genre. Which is sandbox. Dwarf Fortress, along with Infiniminer, is the progenitor of the most recent school of sandbox design philosophy. Spore is a sandbox game that heavily advertised exploration, creation, and player freedom. Don't Starve is a modern survival sandbox game.

Mining in Starbound currently is not fun. It's tedium. And there's a terrible balance between how much mining is required to allow for exploration in the current beta. The game is ACTIVELY DISCOURAGING exploration in a genre that usually emphasizes it. Starbound is basically telling you "exploration is bad, have fun spending hours on this one world while I tease you about other planets that could make things easier" early on. It's actually making the existence of the whole Alpha sector a bit pointless because you need to spent hours mining one or two planets to build the beacon and spending fuel travelling is completely counter to that goal.

Once you unlock beta you can travel a bit more, but still why have the alpha sector at all in that case? May as well drop the player into a 4-6 hour long tutorial planet where all the ores and that are preset so you can guarantee they have what's needed to leave.

And this game was not advertised at all as "intergalactic mining simulator."

Sandbox is a wide term used to describe an experience. Not really game mechanics. There is a huge variety of sandbox that have exactly nothing in common between them except the typical "freedom" you enjoy.
Even the X series is a sandbox, but it doesn't share anything else with any of those games.

    And here is another one.
    Still waiting for the gettalife.

Actually, I've researched this game for quite some time. And I've watched streams by the devs, listening to them talk about features. I've seen people testing weapons, fighting mobs, playing with procedural generation, building houses, and showing off tech.

I never saw anyone mine for hours, though... not once.

Really? Why don't you watch any let's play of Starbound on YouTube.

I think I provided perfectly adequate arguments in my previous posts. Why don't you try to read them.

But seriously, I never thought I would witness the day when users would ask for mining to be removed from Minecraft/Terraria/Starbound gamestyle. This whole thing is hilarious.

Your entire argument is "I want it this way, so you're wrong." That's not really an argument.

The simple fact is what you want is counter to what the game is presented and advertised as.

Not lets plays of the beta. The things the developers showed off, in oh, THE LAST YEAR or so. You know, when I backed the game and its ideas. The "Lets plays" of the current things I'm talking about aren't relevant since the game was only revealed to be this mining-intesive grindfest that it currently is, you know, when beta came out.

I think you're missing the point though. Intentionally.

Do you really think that in a dev diary they would show you hours of mining? Or lots of different features? Please.

I don't think I am missing anything, and if I am, please enlighten me.
You are complaining because you say they didn't show any mining in their dev diaries. But that happens to be in the game.

You're telling me DWARF FORTRESS has nothing to do with Starbound?

Be careful Iceciro, he's going to accuse you of wanting to ruin the game by asking for ,you know, "fun" in it instead of a game that feels like 90% busywork.

Starbound isn't just Terraria with spaceships. It's supposed to be a lot more.

So you're admitting hours of mining is boring. And by the way, not dev diaries, streams of them playing the game. You know. Building stuff. Traveling around. Using the procedurally generated guns. Never mining.

Here comes the guy, who would like to hear your argument on what I have just said. Guess, there aren't many of those in your repertoire. There isn't stated nowhere that mining is a backbone of this game.

Follow the story or create your own, experience the game how YOU want to.
Well, I wanna explore the universe on my own terms. How about giving us other options to do so than just mindless mining, as promised?

From what I have heard and read about the game, I expected survival sci-fi space travel sandbox, as Devs stated. Ever saw Firefly, Farscape, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica? Were half of the episodes about mining?

I chose this game specifically, because I got tired of Terraria concept. And what do I get..

I haven't played DF. I can't say anything about it. And... your meme is... lovely.
The point is that you are comparing various games on the sole basis that they are all referred to as "sandbox". Sandbox is a loose term. It can apply to very, very different games. You brought up Spore too. They have nothing in common.

No. In fact I haven't even wrote that....

You choose poorly. This game has the same concept at its base. This is no secret. No revelation. It's common knowledge.

Actually that's a good point Jacomo. The survival aspect needs played up a bit more currently.

I'd trade some of the mining tedium for more emphasis on the hunger mechanic which has very little impact in the beta.

Though honestly I think all that needs to change is the ratio used to turn coal into fuel or the radio used to turn wood into coal, more the former. Wood is used for a ton of crafting and is currently a non-renewable resource so, at least for beta purposes, dropping it to 5:1 might be a good idea.

They also need to make it so plants will grow when you're not on the planet somehow.

This game needs to change a lot. It shouldn't be circling about mining, but the actual survival and exploration. That was stated by Devs, yet the gameplay is different. I understand this is beta, but I kinda fear that this trend will remain even when the game is released.

I concur. It'd also impart a bit more import to homesteading; vast fields are more useful if the food you're growing is actually useful.

Joe Chip is just a little screaming carebear, who doesn't even reply, when he knows he has no arguments left (I guess that is kinda cool though) and things won't go his way.

Still waiting for the reply, bro. :p
