On one hand it would make for a more realistic (and hilarious) experience to have all NPCs be subject to weapon damage, on the other, it could get annoying if you shoot off-screen and kill your friend healer.

    agreed.

Solution: don't shoot unless you know where the bullet/laser beam is going to go.

I can already see myself accidently killing my favortie Neko girls in maid outfits.
Lets not put killable NPCs in. For the Nekos sakes :notworthy:

It should be possible to kill them indirectly at least.

Killing is one thing i hope you can befriend with npcs aswell and tell them to stay where you like them to so your buildings are not empty ghost houses but i think i`ve already read something about that somewhere...

How about a simple safety toggle? As standard, you only hit things that are hostile to you. Switch off the safety and you can hit everything, friend and foe alike! Consequences be damned!

That way it's an active decision, made by the player, to kill everything and potentially screw their quests or, indeed, their game. :3

I voted yes, because Morrowind :p
I personally see no problem with possibly killing npcs on your space station, because unless you get attacked you wouldn't have a weapon out anyway.

Obviously important NPCs should not be killable, but some should be.

They should all be killable, but you only kill the important ones if you're stupid.

Yeah, Imagine, you are buying stuff and you see something nice. Your nice buddy decides to chop him up before you'd manage to buy your equipment, what a shame.

I hadn't even thought about the MP Server implications of killable NPCs. An ultimate troll move would be to go into a quest hub and slaughter every NPC.

Haha, that's right. I don't want that to happen though.

Somehow I'm getting the impression that trying to mass murder a bunch of NPC wont be that easy. They might even kill you before you can if they enough of them. They will have stats, most probably weapons for some and they will have differents behaviors meaning some might be merchant while other would be guards and stuff. But if this thing about differents NPC factions make it in and the ability to join such factions, then my guess is yea, you can kill any NPC if you set yourself as enemy agains them.

Exactly. Fable did it this way and it was perfect.

I think the main story NPC's should be invincible, while any other NPC is killable. Similar to what Bethesda did. Unless they make it so if you kill one of the main quest people it gets transferred to someone else on a different planet, or you could find the quest in a different way. Cause I mean people shouldn't be punished if they accidentally slaughter a whole town with rockets. Right? I mean slaughtering a whole town of NPC's isn't something anyone would do anyways. Unless it's with a rocket launcher.

If they want to use the main quest NPCs being invincible they could make a joke out of it, rather then have it serious. I don't know how they'll go about it, maybe a toggle button that makes it so you can hit friendly NPCs? That way you wouldn't accidentally kill anyone you don't want too.

If you kill them you could lose reputation of some sort with them? Idk.. and maybe they can respawn back?...
...so you can kill them many more times...
    over and over again :3

This idea brings me back to an old game that many people may not remember...
    EV Nova anyone? :DD
You had the ability to attack/commandeer/raid anyone at any station, most of the time with great risk however, but it was still a possibility. Seeing as how large Starbounds Universe is (*cough* endless) it would be neat to have actual relation status with empires/npc groups. If you travel far enough you could find places of NPC's that you had previously fought/killed that had not heard any word from the main 'body' of their civilization and did not know about you.

Not sure if I explained myself well, very tired at the current moment.

from what I've seen you will be able to kill the but it will make the rest of them attack you. therefore trolls will have trouble massacring everyone in a village. As to accidentally killing them well, in my opinion you should just unequip your sword when walking into a village, after all who walks into a town swinging a sword (other than a maniac).
