Truthfully, assholes are always going to assholes regardless. You will never get rid of those people. I still don't see the issue though. If his mod does crap to your client, then don't use it, if no one is using his mod it will die out, or you can ignore he exists and not use his mods. You're an adult (I assume), if you don't like something, don't use it. Though, I do agree he should have gotten a greater punishment, but that's for Starbound staff to enforce, rather than limiting modders control over things they make.

Well, when I mod I do it to add features I think would improve the game for me. I honestly don't particularly care if other people dislike it, they don't have to use it.

Honestly I blame that more on the large amount of teenagers that play Minecraft rather than the modding community setup.

Except this is the first step towards squashing competition. It's a problem that Skyrim and Minecraft modding has. Modders have been given such an inflated sense of ego and self-worth that they are actively hostile towards new modders coming in and doing things that have been done before. They scream that it is 'stealing' their 'ideas' and sic their sycophantic followers on people until they just give up or cave in, and competition and innovation die.

Flower child is a terrible example, not even the main supporters of mod author rights liked that douchebag. People like him are gonna do that crap regardless of the mod policy. Most people ignore his mod because of him refusing compatibility with alot of other mods.

So why do you care if other people add on to those features if you're given original credit for the mod?

Which is pretty much exactly what I predicted would happen in that kind of situation, thank you for bringing that up.

Wow, I knew that the Minecraft modding community was bad, but deterring newcomers just because you're better? That's just terrible.

Fortunately, you don't see the author of the first mining laser mod getting furious at the other 2 or 3 mining laser mods that have been published here, etc.

Figured I'd chime in re: MInecraft...

We aren't all bad. There's definitely a contingent of people who just mod because we enjoy what we do. It's very possible to not be a douche all the time, even in a somewhat toxic community.

If anything, the biggest problem with modded Minecraft is that Mojang in no way supports any of the current efforts. I won't go so far as to say actively opposes them, yet.

For the record flowerchild is my personal modding hero for having the strength of character to not compromise on his original vision (and damn did he do an amazing job, his mod is by far the most polished and balanced MC TC out there)

I've already stated my reasons. I may still be working on it, I may not want people with inferior modding knowledge to use something associated with me, and honestly, if I'd finished it, and they ask permission, I would probably say yes, as I also stated. At the end of the day though, because it's my work, I've put hours of my time to create something, and released it for public consumption. I want to know who is changing it, and how, because I made it and that is just a polite thing to do with something someone else made. Perhaps I would want to incorporate their idea into my mod and give them credit, if they were ok with that.

Whoa whoa whoa there. 'If his mod does crap to your client, then don't use it?' How's a person supposed to know what a mod can maliciously do unless it's been reported? How about striking down any mod that does such a thing?

If he's so widely ignored then I don't see why his mod still has so many replies and downloads. Or people calling him a hero.

As a rape victim, Flowerchild is a monster and should not be praised at all. Someone who compares his plights to physical rape and the fight for women's suffrage should never be praised when what he is moaning about is someone making a legal derivative work that goes against his "artistic vision".

Because idiots follow idiots? People praise horrible people all the time, doesn't mean they were right or that they are not bad people. Flowerchild has his own forums where only his fans post on. He constantly turns off the ability for people to join his forums. On the official forums and among every other group, he is laughed at.

FIrstly, it would take someone finding it to report it in the first place. Secondly, after that they could easily spread the news and people could ignore his mod. Also Starbound staff seem to already be trying to protect the modding community from such unpleasant people (with the removal of Starbounder), so your example falls a bit flat since it is already being dealt with by staff.

Havn't heard anything about stuff he's meant to have said, i just know he's one of the best modders I've seen in MC for his content and dedication to making a balanced, awesome experience.

Sorry, my friend, but I'd rather make my opinion known just like you are. If it was just that easy then Flowerchild would be a footnote in the annals of history. But he's not.

Which is why I want the devs to have all facts when it comes to where things could possibly go.

Okay, so how does having a different fork of your mod affect your mod in any meaningful way? How does it hurt things if there are two different version of this ... let's say your new feature is Unlimited Twerking, for now. How are you affected if someone else forks your Unlimited Twerking mod?

How does this affect you in any way? If it's a bad mod, it won't be used.

Why do you need to wait to be 'finished' if someone can make it better while you're still working on it?

    Why? Why does this matter?

If you cared so much about adding new features rather than getting credit, it wouldn't matter who changed it or why, as long as the feature got added. You're being intellectually dishonest. "I want to add new features to the game and see it improved" as a premise does not include "I don't want anyone else working on it while I'm working on it", "I don't want bad modders to work on it", and "I want to know who does anything to it". From the premise you stated, someone else working on it, if they are a BETTER modder, should be objectively good because they can do things that you cannot.

Even if they are a bad modder:

a] gives them experience to mod in the future
b] they may have ideas for it that you do not, because not being a skilled modder does not prevent someone from having neat ideas, even if half-implemented

Do you know how many people in the Minecraft community learned how to do mod stuff from poking at other people's mods and playing with them, even if they didn't release it as a modded version of the mod? I'll give you a hint: it's a lot.

And your last premise does not follow from that either, because again, if it were more about features it wouldn't matter who modified it if the feature worked better. Everything you said points to you being more concerned that Elate gets credit than about the feature of the game, no matter what you're claiming is true.

No more nitpicking than those who were complaining about the original system. Closing the thread will just be seen by those whose legal rights are being stepped on by the new system as Chucklefish trying to gag the complaints and concerns. Everyone deserves an equal voice.

    Deal.

If Chucklefish owns everything and they've said they're open to modding, then I'll do whatever I want with any mods posted!
