Will beta characters carry over?

When the beta gets released, people will play and put a lot of work into their characters. When the full game goes live, will those characters be playable in the full game, or will everything have to be restarted?

    I don't care either way.
I'll probably just end up starting anew due to new item additions.

  3. I would assume so, yes. The move to release will probably like a really big update, not a whole new file to download, etc.
Though, like Zangoose said, I'll probably be starting over when the game is officially released.

I am leaning towards what is on our toons we are allowed to keep but the worlds reset.

    That's my hope anyway :p

Its not like Path of Exile, your characters and what they've accomplished mean nothing as a whole. That said, there is absolutely no reason for character resets at all.

This is a burning question I've wondered for a while, too. Not only that, but I hope they do indeed finalize terrain generation before beta release so that that's final too... I don't want another Minecraft issue going on where I constantly feel like I need to start over. If I do start over, I want it to be because I just want to do it, not because I need to to get new stuff or that it would be beneficial to start over. That would stink.

Concerning new content or land generation stuff that occur later in game development: Why not explore freshly generated planets rather than creating a whole new world?

Depends. If the character files from an earlier version cause stability issues or not.

I don't care either way, though they seem to know what a Beta actually is *cough* Notch *cough* it appears as though the Beta will just for testing the "full game" for bugs and other issues before full release; and, therefor, the game will probably use the same launcher and probably use the same saves in Beta and post-release.

Yeah it might suck, but it's still beta; Not full release.

It might only reset according to save compatibility between Beta and Release, in which case, prepare for it.

I'd assume a reset at some point - or rather a save-breaking update. But I doubt it would happen on the day of full release (as whatever breaks the save compatibility would need to be tested!).

MMO's often reset characters on the day of full release so beta testers don't get too much of an advantage over new players. I don't think that's an issue with Starbound. So really, it would only be if an update broke the backwards compatibility of saves, like in Minecraft.

I seem to recall one of the provided reasons on why they haven't released beta yet was that they wanted to get through all the potentially save-breaking stuff beforehand, so as to not erase player progress.

I suspect there will be sanity checking stuff implemented in the character loader, anyways. Safeguards to protect the game against corrupted characters, load old character data and rewrite it with the most modern version of the save engine...

Updating a beta character to launch would fall under that category. Individual server operators could force a reset on all server-side PCs, but I figure any character data actually saved on your own machine oughta be safe.

Good thing this isn't an MMO and what you're describing is not a thing that will happen.

Yes, that was my point. Because Starbound is not an MMO they are not likely to reset characters for the reason most MMOs reset characters. However, some people have mistaken it for an MMO in the past so it bears mentioning I guess.

I'm actually for and against this.

Well sure, I would love how to have my character carried over but..

I don't however, want to be in the front when the full game comes out, I kind of want to start over to explore a different way.

I will miss my character that is for sure but I think in all honesty I would be more happy if I had to start over.

We can't answer the question just yet.
As the beta will be going, there may be reworks of an entire part of the engine. This includes data storage. If they go from one method to another, we may have to start over entirely. Maybe they will release a tool that allows conversion, but this will really depend on whether the changes were drastic or not.
