Why you think Starbound is better than Terraria (or vice versa)

Note: It's Terraria, not Terreria. Just something for future reference if you do happen to write Terraria.

I think Terraria is superior in combat, development and experience. Though Starbound is turning into a great, enjoyable game, I'll always think Terraria is the better of the two, unless Starbound exceeds my high expectations.

Not to mention that Terraria is also infinitely smaller in terms of scope. One planet is a lot easier to work on than a universe with millions of systems and even more planets. Tons more biomes, which means a lot more monsters. Add in the whole quest/story progression which take you through fixing a ship, to off the planet, to a gate in space, to a whole town of NPCs (WAY more than Terraria)...which in turn requires a lot of work just for the quest/conversation system, and multitude of other things planned such as End Game PvP.

Of course Starbound would take longer. Terraria was very simplified compared to what Startbound is doing. In fact, even with Terraria's years of content and feature updates, it will still dwarf in comparison to the scope that Starbound has. So yeah, Starbound being bigger in every way, it would obviously take longer to develop than Terraria.

Okay, I get the 1.0 part. But nothing in that post from Tiy says anything about 1.0 being the official release. Nor does it hint toward it being finished anytime soon. He says he's anxious to get it done. The fact he posted on the blog today that they haven't even started implementing their plans for tier 2 yet. Seems like a lot of work still if you ask me. Then there are tiers after tier two they need to work on. So 1.0 not, it's not the official release until my Steam Starbound store page no longer says Early Access.

And it seems there is something you can do. Seeing as to how you provided the link in your post ;)

I never said it was official release - just that its content complete. As in all their basic gameplay elements + content will be in the game.

While I like Starbound and Terraria I have to say Terraria is more fun in some places. It has cool and unique items, Lots of loot for you to get including many vanity items and accessories. Starbound may have the whole travel the universe thing but eventually all the planets seem to be the same. Go to planet labeled forest. Find small forests, Jungles, Deserts, The occasional village. They're all so similar . Also the enemies in Starbound are way too easy, They use the same moves too often. Like a big yellow thing that only uses Body Slam or Triple Hop. Even then they are just annoying not very difficult. There are many good and fun things about Starbound but it still isn't finished so it can't be too harshly judged.

Terraria is NOT smaller than starbound though. Thats the thing, Starbound is like a wide lake only an inch deep, whereas Terraria is a river a mile deep. The biomes in Terraria provide much more variety and gameplay than the biomes in SB , which basically is just a palette/sprite swap.

SB devs need to add depth to the game and its planets. It seems like thats what theyre trying to do though, but as it stands, IMO, SB feels alot smaller than Terraria.

Not sure if I would call it that or not.

Stage 2 means most every feature will be in the game, but the main questline won't, which is kind of huge.

Plus, if by content-complete you mean they're done, and stop adding content, well... We're hopefully a few years off from that :p
Yeah. It's partially an issue of polish I'm sure, but still, a lot of areas in SB still seem... same-y.

The main issue is that because of the creature gen in this game you have no idea what to expect on a planet, there's no consistent narrative going on. It kind of ruins the atmosphere when you beam down to a tundra planet and are immediately beset by pink dinosaurs with scorpion stingers or whatever.

I think that's one of the things they're hoping to fix with 1.0. At least, I recall them doing some work on creature gen.

This is similar to my first experience with Terraria as well. A pair of my friends are crazy in love with Terraria they play together at least an hour every day, every freaking day. During one of our monthly D&D days (can't say sessions because they literally last all day, or more) we where taking a break and they insisted I tried it. I was not impressed. I feel that all these people who are in love with the game have simply been playing it so long they don't know any better.

Now I am not saying Starbound is better...yet, it still has a ways to go. But I just don't see the appeal of Terraria and I have tried, believe me I spent several hours playing with those two and but I just didn't feel like it was worth it. I felt so bad about it too, they where trying so hard to get me to like the game.

I would say it is more appeal then playing it so much. Some people like the game style, others might find it just meh. I know some people liked MC (me included) and others people though it was pretty meh because all you did was mine stuff and avoid getting murder, there is not much to explore and find. Kinda just whatever you are in to kinda thing.

Both games are similar in certain concepts, but keeping in mind that Terraria is a finished (albeit with on-going updates) game while Starbound is still in Beta, it would be sort of unfair for me to say that either one is better than the other on such uneven grounds.

However, from what has been shown so far, I enjoy certain things in Terraria better than I do their counterparts (if applicable) in Starbound, and vice versa.

I loved Terraria, I still play it when I'm on the treadmill, its a hell of a lot more relaxing once you figure out building.

But there is something in the endgame that is lacking once you manage to get and kill everything and its mother. Or made half the dirt layer into your glowing mushroom kingdom. And I think Star bound can provide with its quests and encouragement to travel. Still there will be an endgame, but it'll always be one I'll never "finish"

That, and I want to try multiplayer, of which there was only limited experience in Terraria console.

Depends on what you you are referring to when you talk about size. I'm not talking about polish and completeness. If that's what you define size by, then sure, Terraria is smaller. Like I said in my post you quoted--scope. Yes, Terraria definitely feels more complete. Very complete. I'm talking SB being bigger in regards to the project scope, coding, etc. I do like your lake/river analogy. But this lake that is SB is getting deeper with every update, and eventually it's going to be a giant lake a mile deep, with a LOT more features than Terraria will ever have.

Terraria, in all its completeness, is still very feature limited. You craft, you build, you kill things, have limited and boring PvP, and you can fish. That's it. In SB you craft, kill things, collect things, can build homes to rent for progression, can farm for progression, explore for progression, do random quests, have NPC towns, explore limitless planets (which will eventually be balanced), have a spaceship, have way more variety of biomes, have outposts, have space stations, have invasions, have Director Mode, have infinite space to build, have conquest PvP.

Yes, now they may be an inch deep, that I totally agree. But that's all about polish while they lay the foundation of these features. Then they'll start putting the walls up and decorating. And it will be glorious :)

I think that Terraria is better in almost every way... at the moment!
Starbound does have some things over it, imo.
The Spaceship and graphics style, multiple races and villages.
I also really love Starbound's grappling hook. :)

In Terraria music changes by biome, which adds a lot of unique feel to them.
The monsters, having been custom-made, generally look way better than the randomized ones.
Way more all sorts of cool weaponry. Most weapons feel same-y and bland in Starbound. A few exceptions exist.
Monster invasions, ropes for hellevators and the different kinds of explosives, hairdyes, tools/"toys" like Ice Rod.

But... I believe Starbound will eventually surpass it, or at least rival it.
Once the real mech system is added (as opposed to them being just techs), the combat system is tweaked (which is coming in next patch!), all the different farming and renting systems are done, the dungeon protectors are made, the item system is tweaked to make more interesting items appear, the home planet claiming system with it's UFO and all completed and ... and... you've got the idea.
There's still so much missing from Starbound, whereas Terraria is a complete game already!

Just skim through http://playstarbound.com/roadmap/ to get an idea how much is planned.

I was very underwhelmed by Terraria. I've played through the most recent updates, through hardmode, etc, and I've stopped playing it due to lack of interest.

I've gotten my money's worth with Starbound just with laughs and observing NPC behavior. This universe feels so much more alive. Progression feels much nicer than Terraria. I've played through the most recent updates, it felt like a chore going through everything again.

Edit: Oh, and the Grappling Hook in this game is incredible. I love fooling around in Asteroid Belts with two hooks, the mobility is amazing.

I'm kind of disappointed with the new terra update. The new summon items are cool, but besides the fishboss drop summon they are all largely weaker than the tiki summons and the haunted/tiki armor. I did really like the wasp summons, but on hard mode they hit most things for only 1s. Haven't tried the twins summon yet. Or battled the fish boss since I restarted to try the update fresh.

If starbound itself added fishing I don't think it would be very good because starbound lacks the accessory system. Which is really where I think terraria is better and have pretty much always thought. That ability to customize your setup just adds a lot.

I do disagree with starbounds armor giving more hp, its fun in terra finding hearts. Those in themselves are one reason to dig deep underground. And playing minecraft I like to add the crystal heart mod that largely does the same exact thing. It would also have another effect, hardcore characters who die and you make a new hardcore character. Then warp to the cords that one died at and get everything back and exact same stats. If something like hearts was in, you'd have to earn all that hp back.

I highly agree, again, with your statement.
Terraria is exhausted/finalized while Starbound is still under development!!

You other guys already compare both games, but why? Starbound isnt even finished yet nor out of the Early Access!
Let's see the Early Access as a "paid Closed and unfinished Beta", maybe pre-Beta.
Do you compare 'em due to the fact, that Starbound within its development stage is that strong already or maybe too strong for Terraria's future? Yes!

Starbound already has a bunch of potential and we haven't even seen a bit of its percentage yet!!

And so (as a SciFi fan) we should stop talking about the comparison between Terraria and Starbound until we see SB v1.0+

  20. At this point Terraria is far better than starbound. Sad but true

    1. It's actually released.
    2. It's feature complete.
    3. 2 years after release it's still receiving steady content filled updates that blows starbounds "nightlies" out of the water.
    4. It's actually released.
    5. Terraria can have angled blocks, starbound doesn't for some strange reason.
    6. Terraria is 200mb and runs flawlessly when in events that have deozens of dozens of mobs on the screen, Starbound barely runs at a decent fps in wondowed mode on an open empty planet, say goodbye to framerate when near a city.

I can go on forever at this point.
