Why you think Starbound is better than Terraria (or vice versa)

I wouldn't say Starbound is better than Terraria now but it will be in the future.

Starbound has more depth and the interface is cleaner/easier to read.

I like how player characters are bigger in starbound, that's really the only thing I like about SB more at this point.

Would you like a hamburger now, or a frozen ribeye? It's not really a great comparison, because we look at Terraria now (which is NOT the equivalent of a generic hamburger, mind you), and Terraria is really fun. It has a lot of fun loot, fun accessories (darn you, Guarding, I wanted Warding!), and the boss fights are pretty challenging. You really feel like you've accomplished something when you finally beat them. And then you go back later and beat them without wearing pants, because real men do things like that.

At the same time, Terraria is very near "finished." What you see now, is probably what you will see in a year. Personally, I've spent hundreds of hours on Terraria, either building gold-bricked hellevators, or mud hellevators with glowing mushroom seeds planted the entire way (the entire tunnel glows in the dark, try it if you ever get insomnia!), or building gigantic apartment buildings in the sky. This stuff is great, but there's only so many times I can do this before I get tired of it. Then, I won't get the itch to play it for another 6-12 months.

Starbound isn't complete yet. I think that it could be absolutely amazing, at least to the level of Terraria, but it's just not there yet. And I don't think that's a bad thing. I think that the dev team has shown some incredible ideas, and I think that they can implement them in ways that will be really enjoyable. So, for the meantime, it's all about building, since the crafting and loot functionality just isn't so great yet, unless you like trying to win the lottery (finding a legendary grenade launcher that is also T10 quality and also has clusterbomb ammo and also has more than 10 dps and also requires less than 500 energy to shoot).

I enjoy it quite a lot right now, because I like building, but I think I'll really enjoy the entire game when Stage 2 arrives. The last 5 or so times I played Starbound, I don't think I attacked any enemies. I just kinda built, or moved items around, or walked around my underlava base thinking how awesome I am. I'm pretty awesome, I'll have you know.

Also, because Starbound was developed after Terraria, they can look at what Terraria did well, copy/expand on that, and look at what Terraria did not so well, and fix it. Or at least try a different way and see if it works out. By this, I mean the interface, the crafting menus, and stuff like that.

So, my hope is that Starbound is at least as enjoyable as Terraria, but I'm actually quite happy with what we've gotten so far. I've spent hundreds of hours on it, for $15. Games like this (and Terraria) are why I don't really buy mainstream games anymore. The price tags are too high, and I just don't enjoy them as much as the indie gems. Thanks for setting the bar way too freaking high, guys. You've ruined my interest in AAA titles.

    "Copy/expand".

In before someone who doesn't agree with you uses that against you.

I prefer the non random weaponry, items, and monsters of Terraria over Starbounds randomized mechanic for items and animals. I also like it's constant reference towards sharks. (Starbound clearly needs more sharks)

There goes the monkey with the monocles. Shouldn't have opened that can of worms.

Anyway, i tried playing Terraria not all that long ago. It feels so much less smooth than Starbound. Plus.. y'know. Starbound is bigger in scale, way bigger. I like big. Extra big, oh yeah... mm- i mean.. also, in Starbound more things are readily available to you from the get go while in Terraria i felt very restricted-ish. Could be just me. Maybe i just tried playing it on the wrong day. Who knows...

    shouldn't be too much of a problem^^ ;)

anyway, see my posts from few sites back Terraria IS great, Starbound IS great, starbound will be even better in future!
    ... so.

Ha! Me playing the rebel again, liberating. :headbanging:

to say it every now and then is cool,

    to remind sometimes, is better

to almost complain about off-topic e.v.e.r.y. ~fifth post is ridicules.

sometimes you have to let the topic flow, it will surely bring more and more to the daylight, but you can't freaking discuss 1 subject for years, no, that's not a reason to go ahead and lock the thread, that's just a matter of people communicating DISCUSSING, further, to come in and lock it up like this *stay on topic* kinda breaks it doesn't it ? You seem to like doing this, you could join the discussion for 2-3 posts and lead the subject to a near on-topic subject instead of: *Hands up!* - *stay on topic*. Not telling you how to moderate, but heck this is redonk.

Starbound is better because fuck mining one block at a time and fuck having to use explosives to do more.

Aside from that, building stuff is so much nicer thanin Terraria, too. The UI is vastly improved over it.

If there's one thing I've learned from internet forums, it's that anything you say WILL be used against you, even if it doesn't make sense. Especially if it doesn't make sense.

But, I think there's a lot of reasonable answers here, and not a lot of "X is obviously better!" or "Y is factually better because I said so!". That's reassuring.

The new smart-cursor stuff in terraria really takes a huge chunk out of the pain of mining one block at a time. When you get to even medium tiered pickaxes, this is basically a non-issue.

I would say that the PickAxe makes mining 1x1 less annoying, but it still requires you to move the mouse a few times in order to dig tunnels vertically or horizontally. Especially since Terraria has much more focus on underground, it's very noticeable.

When I played with my brother, we'd stand on the same spot, and each of us would pickaxe the blocks below us, he'd take the right one, I'd take the left one, and this allowed us to very quickly make a Hellevator. It's still annoying though =/

i never had that issue xD

1x1 mining in terraria is really annoying, but seeing that the character only walks so fast it makes sense.
The game is settled pretty calm and the atmosphere is somewhat chill, even with the goblins :p

with terraria i have this feel of, it's been a long day, let's come down a bit and play terraria. It's nice and chill!
where in starbound it's all unsorted and somehow it's always a hassle,
a monster here a monster there, oh chick, i need coal for my ship, darn.. new armor, let's carefully hunt new ores,
get to a new planet, here all dungeons are looted, shit, i'm through with the planet again.

Maybe I'm not being clear. They recently added a smart cursor feature which intelligently senses the overall direction of your cursor and mines the blocks for you. If you haven't tried it, I'd recommend it, it's done very well.

So now if you want to mine straight down for a hellevator, you just put your mouse cursor below you and it will mine the appropriate blocks automatically.

A friend bought me terraria during the steam summer sale. Tried it out, and I hated it. Everything seems so small, I feel like I have to squint to see my character and what they're doing. I had no idea what I was doing either.

Starbound has different races which are easily identifiable, the UI is easy to learn, and you can enjoy everything around you. That's enough to keep me hooked to Starbound over Terraria

Did not know this! Thank you for elaborating and clearing that up for me. That's a really, really nice feature. Hopefully Starbound can get something like it for horizontal tunnels, because the last time I played (I'm still on Stable) you mine 3x3 areas, but require 4 block-height tunnels to move through. Again, with the extra effort required!

I want to be Bugs Bunny, tunneling and moving and tunneling and moving and not turning right at Albuquerque.

So far, Starbound is not even close to Terraria, the latter is the far superior game.
I can only hope that Starbound lives up to its hype, but so far I don't find combat, digging or exploring very satisfying.
