Why you think Starbound is better than Terraria (or vice versa)

I've asked people which game they prefer and sometimes they say that this is the superior game out of the two. Why is that? I'm not saying that Starbound is a bad game but i just wonder why people think it's better. I think the biggest advantage Terraria has is the weapons and combat. The weapons in starbound are pretty bland compared to Terraria. Look at these weapons http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Weapons and compare them to these http://starbounder.org/Weapons. There are also accessories and potions to help enhance the combat. I'm sure most of us can agree that the gameplay is the most important aspect of the game so this is what won Terraria over Starbound for me. A clear pro that Starbound has over Terraria are the Worlds as they are randomly generated, guaranteeing infinite exploration. I would appreciate if the higher tier sectors were much more menacing by having more than just stronger enemies.

So, i would love to hear your thoughts on why you think Starbound is better than Terraria or vice versa.

    No flaming please.

I want to start off by pointing out Terraria has a very big advantage in being finished (plus having received awesome huge updates). When people ask which one to buy I tend to recommend Terraria because there is more to do since it is like 3 years old. Starbound has potential and the lore and races in it really attracted me to the game. But Starbound is also unfinished, it several of the things are missing (Quest for instance) and stuff is not as polished as Terraria. Both games have their merit and both games have their faults.

the only things i can think of the gameplay which are better then terraria is in my opinion the grappling hook mechanics in starbound and the dual wielding.
it's just so fun and feels so good.
but as for now i can't really judge which game is the better one.

Duel wielding in Terraria would be AMAZING. Imagine duel wielding Tsunami bows.

If we were to argue without considering their completion rate. But just extrapolate.

    STARBOUND
    • Villages - Terreria unfortunately does not have any NPC villages, which gives starbound a huge advantage. The villages in most part looks nice but Rise of the Hyotyl by @seancruz design of villages honestly trumps the standard dungeons in vanillia SB without question. As you can see from the picture he used both foreground and background blocks to create a parallax village. While Starbound for every village it only utilizes foreground blocks hence creating 1 long village which is represented as a "straight line" with no depth. The difference in quality between the two is readily apparent. Not that Starbound design is bad. Starbound also creates great overall picture of great unique design. But in comparison to Rise of the Hyotyl it is sorely lacking.

    • Planets - It is nice to be able to travel between planets - to give more a sense of exploration
    • Vanity - The design of the vanity items are fantastic
    • Ambient Art - The art style of starbound is in most part amazing. Though underground is a tad drab as compared to the surface. The style of art is truely great.
      • For sake of Honorary mention @kugutsu 's General Store mod. and @Boogy Pixel Store Mod are fantastic representations of great pixel art. Honestly CF really should think about incorporating their art work into the villages. [ If the mod owners allowed it of course ]
    • Monster Diversity - Now... honestly this is more of a double edged sword. The diversification of monsters is great. But what ended up happening is they are essentially reskins of one another. Of course that is slowly changing now thanks to the monster parts ability system. Though there is only so much which can be done. I personally think they should work on a bit more unique monster types with unique animation and attack patterns.
    • Loot - lets be frank. The loot lists in Starbound is horrific, dreadful, horrendous, horrible, frightful, fearful, awful, terrible, atrocious, heinous and down right bad. If there was a single point which destroyed star bound it would be loot. If I had to score it out of 10. It would be a 3/10. The only loot I ever bother looking forward to any more is special tiles from buildings to make my own building or vanity sets.
    • NPC's have a bit more life in Starbound. They aren't rich figures full of life, but at least they are 2D in personality. As much as can only be expected in sandbox game. [ In director mode - I am sure things would change dramatically in that sense ] - BUt I do love the writing of their dialogue, which in most part pretty funny. Though sometimes I wish they would add a bit more controversy into the writing as they do with horse boobs.
    • Underground - in a single word? pointless. There is no reason to go to the underground unless you have nothing better to do. The variety, the loot 100% of starbound is based on the surface biome. There is currently nothing in the underground which is ever required to progress through starbound. Nor is there any worth while unique biomes - unless you consider tiny houses and lanterns randomly spread out as a justified form of worth while sight seeing. What would redeem starbound? Ancient underground villages (dwarven ruins) - Under water caves surrounded by indestructible stone, which requires you to swim through a passage to reach. A massive underground forest with dinosaurs? There are so many options to make underground worth going too. Instead of slime tiles and tiny houses.
    • Dangerous Environments - One thing I do enjoy is the danger of the environment. Unfortunately the danger does not scale so acid tends to do the same damage everywhere you go. One thing I would like to see corrected. Meteors - though many people hate them, I love them. I think they could make the mechanic a bit better. Instead of doing 200 damage to all tiles in a 50 block squared area. It does 500 damage to the blocks it gets into contact with then the damage reduces per associative block So if the blocks had 1000 health, the meteor wouldn't destroy any blocks. But if the blocks were only 5 health the meteor did 500 damage. It would do 500 damage to each block it touches, then the damage would be reduced by the health of each block + 20 per tile distance. [ To prevent infinite destruction ] To a maximum of say 30 block tiles distance.
    • Modding - the fact Starbound supports modding from the get go with so much ease and functionality was a great boon. Which I think is Starbounds most greatest redeeming factor.
    • Ammo - The fact there is no options for guns to have ammo - or any weapon for that matter - besides throwing. Is sad. Regardless of the fact that ammo would essentially be unlimited end game. The end does not justify the means.
    • Combat - The new Combat system does add a sorely needed improvement. Though it still could use work, it is fundamentally better then Terreria. But right now the NPC's fight very errartically hence the area of improvement.

    Terreria
    • Exploration - lets be fair. Even though terreria is only in 1 planet. There is more exploration on a single planet then every world in Starbound combined. The Diversity of the single planet in terreria is astronomical which compensates for its lack of celestial game play.
    • Loot - The loot is extremely rich and varied. Which is one of the best selling points of the game
    • Accessory Gear - What is sorely lacking in Starbound is useful accessory gear. I do wish they made some randomized gear system which provides random buffs at least. I remember 60% of the time I spent on terreria was just searching for the accessory items.
    • NPCs - in all honesty NPC's have no personality - they are dry 1D figures.
    • Varied weapons - Terreria may not have randomly generated weapons - but it does provide unique ones.
    • Ambiance - Compared to starbound - the only real world which feels unique is the forest. Desert - plans - snow the surface feels flat. In that regaurd they are polar opposites. Terreria is a game about the Earth (underground), SB is a game about the surface (though I wish it would also be about the underground)

Though I might have been a bit harsh on starbound but I have 2 main reasons for it.
    1. With the announcement of 1.0 their main focus is to finish the backlog of items they said they would do. Stretch Goals \ Hyotyl Dungeons \ bosses. Which leaves little room to make any worth while changes if considered
    2. The other reason is, as the game is still considered "in development" by saying - everything is fine. It does unfortunately lead to acceptance of the current state and subsequent future state of the game. Which would be sad if allowed to move forward without stating ones opinion on the matter.

    I enjoy each game differently.

It's always personal preference but these threads still turn in to arguing as people begin citing problems with Starbound development rather than comparing.

  7. One major factor I love Starbound for over Terraria is its art-style. It's simply more aesthetically pleasing to me.

But otherwise, I respect both games for what they bring to the table.

I think it's really too early to try comparing Terraria and Starbound. Once Starbound is formally out of Beta then you can do a bit of comparison. But really if you are going to compare them you are going to have to wait a few years until SB is much further along then it is now.

Edit: I do hope the devs take a hard look at the mods coming out. If they adopt RotH village builds that will be awesome.

    Nearly everything (thats planned).
I loved terraria, though, and if i could play it, i would still occasionally play it. Using Linux though, and dont feel like having a second steam installation in wine (sort of an emulator, that doesnt want to be called an emulator).
The whole game should feel more substantial and bigger than terraria, once progression, quests, etc etc are implemented.
The only thing that comes to my mind that i loved more about terraria is the wiring system. The idea of having "beams" as wiring is a nice one, but im more old fashioned in that regard, and would prefer laying old school wires.
Also, whats *currently* better about terraria would be the progression, simply because in SB (stable / unstable) there is barely a satisfying one. I do think however, that the coming progression will be way better, and will keep me busy for longer. Or at least, i hope so.
Multiplayer would be another big aspect that i guess would be largely better, once a few things get addressed (the ability to disable certain mods, or all of them, on a server, anti-griefing measures, etc).
Another thing about terraria i liked was the spreading of corruption / hallow, was a nice addition for me. Would be fun if SB would implement something similiar, maybe spread of agrarians, or tentacles, or means of terraforming hostile worlds.

(I did prefer comparing a few things i find or found better about terraria, because if i made a list with SB stuff i like more, it would have taken way longer, and i am lazy ;D)
Still, even with Starbound, terraria remains a game i enjoyed a lot, and it brought me quite a bit of fun.
I think it was a good concept, and improving and extending this concept is a good thing :)

Starbound is a gem in the rough, there is so much potential but it just hasnt been brought out yet, afterall its not finished yet. Terraria on the otherhand has had 3 years of polish and is a shining jewel as a result.

I may have spend more time playing Starbound, but i think the gameplay experience of Terraria has so far been better. Ill leave it at that, i think swatelite has already made a pretty good summary.
Especially the lack of a meaningfull underground bothers me a lot with Starbound right now. Its better to run across the surface of a planet, mine surface minerals and loot chests/biomes, and then move to another planet than it is to actually dig down. Fingers crossed this is going to be changed. :)

Personally, I like the UI in Starbound better than Terraria. That's actually been my main hurdle with Terraria. Something about its UI is unintuitive to me, which makes me enjoy the game less.

Terraria is a hack and slasher with building elements, but Starbound could be so much more.

Juice Box has spent hundreds of hours in Terraria, and to be honest, Juice Box does not think Starbound is better, it's close, but Juice Box does not think it's better, and the reason for that is becauseIt's not finished yet.

Juice Box is pretty sure they added some type of search feature in an update a little while ago.

Such threads makes me want to play terraria again! i've played it like 2 or 3 years ago, no clue what version that was but it featured like nothing, i enjoyed it though.

i'm not sure why i'm not enjoying Starbound as much as i did when i played terraria (even in that early stage of it, back in the days)
But in the end it was like it is with every game i'm playing ~ got bored of it.

i feel guilty, not worth it of being here, for saying that, Starbound is a GREAT game, i really do enjoy it! Must-Have if you're looking for cool sandbox games.

I played some Terraria last night, and I think Starbound will be FAR superior when the next patch hits.

Starbound's mining mechanics are much better than Terraria's
    Starbound's UI is FAR better
Starbound is a much bigger, more ambitious game
Starbound is extremely easy to start modding and very supportive of modding in general and of its modding community! Metadept, Omni, Tiy, all hang out in the modding IRC are a quick to answer questions, help, take suggestions and feedback, and so on. I've seen Omni push new code specifically to help out a mod someone was working on. This is probably the most important feature of the game

As it sits right now, Terraria has content and polish on its side. For example, someone mentioned loot in Starbound. The devs just simply have not had time to work on loot and a lot of other balance and QOL concerns. The stuff that is in the game right now had a short pass, and then the team moved on. Stuff like this will be addressed after 1.0
