Why Starter Pet's would be a great new stretch goal.

The thing is though, you can catch a random creature on the first planet you land on, and have that same experience. "Oh I've been traveling with this mushroom headed butterfly thing ever since I first crash landed, hes saved my ass countless times by flapping his wings in my enemies faces while I burn them alive with a flamethrower", vs "Oh yeah this is my cat that follows me around and watches me die".

The system itself isn't bad it just is not that great when compared to the superior system that is already in the game.

Have they announced how to tame monsters yet?

  6. The Vanity Pets are a Good Idea.

    Here are my reasons:
    1) Mostly because of what I said earlier, the two current stretch goals are large additions to the game. The vanity pets are a small cake topping that won't add any additional heavy coding that has the potential of either A) extending release, or B ) using up resources. It's a simple nifty gesture that is mostly a "thank you" to everyone who has been pre-ordering.
    2) We are getting two amazing new features as it is, and if we keep asking for more, and more, and more heavy duty features, then the game will take even longer to finish. Which is something that I think we can all agree on that we don't want.
    3) Having the race-specific pets has the potential to add a lot of awesome lore to the game. Everything from coming up with how and why these creatures are uniquely special to their specific race, and can also be used to add more to each individual players experience. If the pet has ambient actions, or some sort of reactive AI that responds to monsters, NPC's, players, or other pets, that would just add a whole new level of immersion to the game.
    4) Potential improvements for the pets, such as additions to your ship, like a bed for it, or what not, would make for interesting additions. Also, it wouldn't be too difficult to add more pets and more actions for them at a later date.
    5) Customization. Starbound, other than being completely about procedural generation, is also about customization. If there are a decent number of pets for your player to choose from it will add an additional layer of "uniqueness" to your player.

These are just a few of my thoughts on the subject.

    • NPC's will have needs, and offer you quests, some quests will always be difficult as the highest world danger level will always be tough to the most well geared players.
    • No limit to npc/crew size, but space ship has limited space, so you'll have to move people to planet bases too.
    • NPC's will be able to be evicted in an, at this moment, unspecified way.
    • The dev team is toying with the idea of "monster breeding" where the resulting monster will have a mix of the parents' attributes.
    • Monster randomization "intelligently" puts arms/legs/chest/heads together, colours it, decides to give it wings or not, and then gives it unique behaviour.
    • Creatures can be caught and trained to help you fight. These creatures will have stats such as defense, attack damage, speed, which will increase will kills. They can also be trained to fly or swim, etc. This will be able to be done when the creature is at low health. Three creatures may be taken with you at a time. Any "dead" monster on your team will automatically be sent to your monster slot and wait to be healed back at your station.

I'll be honest here the OP did vey little in way of selling this stretch goal to me but Betty here did a good job at it. Point 1 and 2 specifically, though that's me. Also may be partially due to the icon though. :p
Pets should be a neat closing stretch goal... if it's even the last one, that is.

This is true, I honestly kind of like the idea but I just see a bunch of people talking about how awesome it would be to do "X" where "X" is something the tameable monster system already does. If I'm out exploring and I need to kill something having a tamed monster accomplishes that. These vanity pets could fill a utility role, bark when precious metals or treasure is near, growl when monsters are close etc. At the end of the day if none of that is implemented and they are just sprites that follow you around I'd be happy as long as you can obtain all of them somehow.

  12. I am pretty sure that was the idea. We are keeping the already awesome pet system that is currently in place, and just adding, when it boils down to it, a "vanity" pet slot, with unique racial pets that you choose at character creation.

The only reason people are hesitating to accept it is because the devs asked if we wanted something else instead, if there is an alternate option that brings something new to the table I rather not have a 2nd pet that doesn't fight. If they announced this system and never made that thread, I would have just said, "oh that's kind of cool" and been done with it. That thread means they are giving people a chance to recommend ideas they find more interesting or improving the current pet system past a mobile vanity item.

There really is no downside to making suggestions, the worst possible outcome is that we end up with the system already planned and in that case we lost nothing. The chance to improve on it is there, asked for, and welcomed by the devs so I dont understand why people have issues with the community posting there ideas.

I want a pet that I can have around without worrying about it being killed. Having a companion, even a digital one, makes my exploration a lot less lonely and more enjoyable. Works even better if they're cute.

I wouldn't mind pets being a stretch goal, I can't think of anything I would want any more since Starbound already has everything else I want.

Do you think we'll be able to choose if we want a starter pet or not ? Or if we want it to follow us ? It would be annoying not to have these choices.

If this "pet" is a mobile weapon platform, then I don't mind. If it's not at least give me a way to leave it some place safe. I want no non-combatants in my exploration area to avoid their unfortunate destruction, so bringing one along with me doesn't look like a good idea.

I don't know about you OP, but I plan on playing this game with friends. I doubt there will be a time when I'm sitting alone in a cave by myself instead of out exploring the universe with some buds.

Seeing as we don't really have an alternative to compare pets to, it's pretty obvious that they will seem ideal for many. The poll (and by extension, this thread) doesn't really serve much of a purpose as this is the case.
