Why no pause?

It dosen't appear that you can pause the game in solo, I really think this feature should be added (If its not in and I just don't know how to use it). I a kind of pause menue, but the game keep running instead of freezing everything (Creature still move and everything). This can be pretty annoying at some time... I really think it should be added.

(Sorry for the not so perfect grammar, im french)

Mostly because the game is geared to be multi-player, which makes a pause kind of impossible to properly implement.

That said, there's things you can do if you want to step away for a couple minutes. Your ship is a "safe zone", so you can drop a Flag to set up a warp point then beam back to the ship, step away from the computer, then come back and warp to your flag.

You can also surround yourself with blocks so monsters can't get you, but that is not as effective if there are enemies who can phase through blocks.

That isn't really true though. First off, the game isn't inherently multi-player and was never billed as such.

More importantly, you can absolutely implement pausing in a game designed around multiplayer. Just look at Minecraft. They switched to the "local multiplayer" type engine a few years ago, where you basically host a server locally for yourself. However pausing still works totally fine in singleplayer.

This has been a workaround since the beginning of the beta, but it doesn't work when on missions or challenges, since you can't place blocks.

it's a useful feature, but it's not really necessary.
the multi-player was one of the big draw-ins of Starbound. it was totally billed for it lol. lately they've been focusing on the single-player aspects so you haven't heard much of it, but just before the Early Access launch they made a big deal out of the multi-player feature.

I think it's understandable to be dismayed by the lack of pausing in Starbound -- after all, there's some circumstances where beaming back to your ship is impractical but something REALLY urgent is happening that requires you to leave your computer. There hasn't really been any word on pausing being implemented into Starbound as far as I am aware, so all we can do for the moment is take the following precautions as we play:
    • If you are going to be thoroughly exploring planets, ensure that you have free, uninterrupted time ahead of you.
    • If you do not have definitively uninterrupted play time ahead of you, leave "bread crumbs" so you can retrace your steps if you need to beam up.
    • If you need to leave the computer and your character is in an unsafe place, beam up or barricade yourself as well as you can.

Just do /admin while your gone. Nothing can hurt you, just turn it off again when you get back.

/admin is the best advice given in this thread. It will basically pause the game since nothing can hurt you.

For missions or challenges you can pretty much leave the game alone. Monsters don't respawn (fairly certain it's the same for being inside planet dungeons like the Apex Lab/Avian Tombs), so if you need to leave, just make sure you're not standing under a flame pillar and you should be fine. :nurudapper::nuruflirt:

Pretty much. Enemies in missions/challenges don't stray far from their spawn points, so a light retreat to a cleared-out area will keep you safe should you need to step away.

You COULD just press escape and click Save & Quit.

When you load up your character again you'll be in the exact spot that you left, and it only takes like a couple of seconds both ways.

why is it geared to be a multiplayer game, but terraria is easier to do multiplayer?

How far along in development is Terraria in comparison to Starbound?

Terraria is considered a "complete" game. Whereas Starbound is still in EA, and is heavily under development. There are still many things that will come and go with the Nightly Builds.

Both Starbound and Terraria are almost equally easy to play multiplayer with. Terraria, however, has made it easier with the release of patch 1.3 as it added Steam hosting.

Starbound has a similar hosting service prior to Terraria's 1.3. You enter the server IP, and password (provided there is one), hit connect and you're jumped straight into the host's universe.

But we are digressing here. Perhaps this topic should be moved to a different thread for further discussion if it can be kept at a civil manner.

As a note, it USED to have a single player pause. That went away sometime during the Koala updates.

I do not remember there ever being a pause even in Koala.
The game was designed to be single player hosted on a emulated server.

It only worked it you played it locally. If you hit escape, the game would pause on the quit menu. Used to use it all the time, I was actually rather frustrated to find it went away.
