Why it is important to get a Beta out

I know, I realize that :) And the best example of that, the one we all currently have at hand, is the amazing positive response to Starbound pre-order and this whole thread of us crying loudly for beta :D

I'd love to answer to this since i feel the same way. Minecraft right now IS meh, but it's because there is a significant lack of variety. But considering the amount of things to do (speaking of the low amount of enemies, low amount of block types and ore, relatively low amount of craftables, etc.) versus the amount of time most of us have spent playing it happily, you will find it's success was quite high. For what little there is to do minus your own imaginative constructs i've spent QUITE a lot of time on minecraft. Even more with mods, but still it's base game got hours and hours of play.

    Yes.

This is dependent on what you've seen. For all we know, the devs could only be showing us the parts that they know are working for sure. There could be a large memory leak that is slowly taking up the processing power whenever they play the game and we would never know.

So mad. And when they try to publish an unfinished game of their own everyone is like "FU EA!" and "This is garbage!"

  5. INDEED! Mojang released a Unfinished Game and SOLD MILLIONS.

And if EA tries to do it, it's all RAGE and BURN EA! ahahah Omg. Gaming Industry is near Apocalypse.

Something like a memory leak obviously would have to be plugged, but feature wise it's fine. And as Tiy said in a thread a few days ago "Release was put off because the game was not where we wanted it to be", that tells me stability is not the issue, it's content. And i'm saying content can come while we do our thing and i for one would not be disappointed with this. Especially more so since i'm specifically stating so now. It's not a situation of them handing us a game and we'd be "meh, could be better". Right now with all the asking it's become literally us asking for it.

Mojang told us it was unfinished. It was an understanding. EA put out shoddy unfinished games AS a finished product.

Gaming industry is simply evolving. The large scale companies are being crippled severely by the smaller indie companies that are pushing out quality, high creativity games without asking for too much money.

  9. True Enough. And Instead they finished the game, they put out DLC > Want the Finish and Fixed game? Pay this Extra DLC! :D

Let me tell you, as someone who played Minecraft pretty much day one of Beta? The reason it survived and thrived was only because it was a totally unique experience that hadn't been preceded by anything similar, or at least, not in recent memory of it's release. As others have said, Starbound would now be weighed against the experience of others in games like Terraria and Minecraft.

Now, your point is perfectly intelligent and reasonable, but what you failed to account for is that not everyone else is. All it takes is a very vocal minority to start running all the place, saying Starbound is shit, and reinforcing a negative image.

Oh, I would go one step further and say its success was amazing. I mean that "meh" more subjectively. I personally spent much more time cavern delving in Terraria than in MC. Also, the huge amount of hours spent is the cornerstone of successful sandbox game. And I have no doubt I'll spent another huge part of my life in Starbound (which makes me happy and sad at the same time  )

Yeah bacon, that's what we call strike two. EA and other giants in gaming need to have their feet taken out from under them and fall badly. They've gotten into the mentality that money is all that matters, and to toe the line of what we will tolerate. With their resources they should be able to pump out quality games regularly, instead of shitty games with the speed (and quality) of diarrhea.

  13. Gaming industry ISN'T simply evolving. After the Biggest Failures of Game Launches, for example that caused EA CEO to go away, and EA to start to send layoff letters to all it's employees and studios... Something Big is Coming.

The Huge Gaming Companies, not just EA, are firing, cancelling titles, etc.. I'm not sure what is the Future of the big AAA Titles.
It seems companies are pushing to the limit in the next gen games, and there isn't enough money.

Lusid, you also have to consider that many game developers are significantly underpaid for their work in large-scale companies. From what I've heard, people get hired into EA to work on games, and they are worked like a slave for money that really shouldn't be worth it. This leads me to believe that the devs are getting fed up with making games for shit money and are starting to retaliate.

Given that they all seem to have no desire to end DRM - especially if it's true that the next Xbox is literally a DRM machine - the market is probably gonna fall through, and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw another crash reminiscent of the mid-80's. That said, I wouldn't mind one, really. Might take a hard fall to clean up their act.

I never looked into what they make or what sort of internal things go on. Probably erroneously i view EA as a big detestable entity and would happily give a big up yours to any one who works there. It would do any of their skilled employees a world of good to contact indie companies to possibly help the money go to companies who deserve it.

  17. Yes the XBOX Online DRM, it proves they won't give up and will force this upon the Gamers they like or not, it's the biggest fight against piracy and control of the Players, since when there is online-DRM there is online SHOPs of DLC with absurd prices.

They are simply Hungry for Money in the most absurd sense, it looks they want to eat us, who buy games, ALIVE.

Or we can just stop playing it. I've sold my XBox for just this reason. Also, any games with heavy DRM i refuse to purchase. Some i still play though, but we're not getting into that.

But we are getting off topic here.. This is all about why releasing a beta sooner rather than later would benefit CF moreso than waiting till each and every feature is finished.

The problem with big companies isn't that they're in for the money, but that their decision-making processes are crippled by the will of shareholders who ARE in only for the money. Look at Valve. One of the biggest gaming company in the world and most of their products (not just games) are top notch quality. Why? Because they're private-held company. Those public-held companies are becoming "gaming Hollywood"...

But I sense we have strafed little to off-topic.

This conversation has just spiraled uphill and downhill in every direction. I'm not used to being an active forum poster so this is all new to me. I think im going to head over to the off-topic forums now.
