Why is this game so SLOW PACED?

Actually having bigger smelters might be a nice idea, especially with many people building on their ships. The thing is, not only can you leave your smelter there, but if you're on a server, even one you host for yourself, you can afaik even leave your planet behind. I think in pure single player the plants stop growing and your smelter stops, because it unloads the planet, but on a server it seems to keep at least your home planet in memory, so all your stuff can run while you're off somewhere else murdering the indigineous life forms.

I would probably not get the FTL warp mod, at least not at the moment. The FTL jump is not just there to slow you down, it's actually the "loading" screen of the next planet, if you will. The game is unloading the one you leave and seeding the one you're going to while you watch the stars whoosh by. Skipping the animation might have less then desired side effects, such as not being able to beam down simply because your destination is not there yet. The current build has crazy performance issues as it is with chunk loading on some systems, I would certainly not try and worsen that problem.

As for the last bit, because it's possible that many people like the pacing as it is now. And it's easier to mod in speed ups, then a balanced slow down. I understand that for players who looked at Starbound and associated it with Terraria most things can seem slow, but for now it seems that this game has more roots to share with survival titles like Minecraft, Don't Starve and their ilk then Terraria. At least the crafting and progression system seems that way. Modding provides a solution for those people, while not getting another big part of the community up in arms for "dumbing down" "eazymode" and the other phrases that are thrown around constantly. Just look back at some replies in this thread, and I'm pretty sure you'll know what I mean.

Agreed. Even something like a "starter chest" such as Minecraft has would help. Even simulation and strategy games like Civ, Age of Empires, Anno, etc you can choose to start with a city or even villagers. That'd help a lot at the beginning to start with a copper axe and pickaxe. Or I'm also fine with a "fast/normal" gameplay setting when you roll a character.

Fast would be good for testing end game beta content. Quick start is not bad either.

    Huh. Didn't know that.

But seriously that FTL drive is awful for people like me who get dizzy and motion sick. There needs to be a way to skip it. I'd rather have a plain old "LOADING NEXT PLANET" than the current FTL drive. It looks cool, yeah, and it's practical, but it still makes me sick.

do a bit of experimentation now and then, it really helps with know how to make things go faster(though other then cooking and smelting theres not much left in that regard)
if thats the reason for wanting it removed then I have no valid argument
im sure you could search through the game files and change it so its not so bad, but im to lazy to look for it so I couldnt say

I had been wondering why i'd been reading about so many people having problems constantly beaming from their Ship to their Ship... looks like the Culprit has been found... I myself have no qualms with going through the Jump in full & i've never yet had a Beam Down problem at all thus far. This makes me suspect that maybe the Beam Down problems others have is never gonna go away till the just-before-release Optimizations &/or giving up on that Mod's use.

This looks like a good request... maybe an Option could be created to make a person FTL Jumping in their Seat 'pass out' into a sort of sleep or trance-like state for the duration of the Jump as a sort of 'anti-motion sickness' yoga the Character performs to manage their condition as they travel the Stars. This could be implemented as a Checkbox Option in the Options Screen & when on, when ya initiate the FTL Jump, ya temporarily lose control of the Character & they stay in the Seat & enter a sort of 'sitting sleep' & the screen dims & eventually turns black by the time the FTL Jump is in full force, then ya only get the Audio of the Jump till the Jump ends, then the Character wakes up & the screen fades back in till it's at full brightness again & the Character regains control of themself (aka you regain control of the Character) shortly after the Ship finishes re-positioning itself & parks over the new Planet. This sacrifices the capability to be able to do stuff as ya FTL Jump, but then again, not like ya can do stuff mid jump anyway if you're Motion Sicknessing all over anyway... guess that's the bummerness of having a Disability.

I think Smelting will get better down the road... That Stone Furnace has gotta have an Upgrade somewhere in one of the not-yet-implemented Tiers. ;)

I'll chime in with one of my concerns (although I doubt it's new): the early pacing of the game is way off. By that, I mean you can unlock the Gamma Sector without ever leaving your starting planet. That's as far as I've gotten, but it seems as if there will be no need to visit more than two planets in any sector before advancing a tier or two.

There's a vast universe out there and currently almost no reason to explore it. In that respect, the game goes by way too fast.

Now, I'm mostly attributing that to the game being early beta (and I'm sure the developers are aware of it), but I think most of us are aware of games where the time between "early beta" and "release" could be reasonably measured in days. I fear that when people try to comfort others with "it's still early beta" those people are imaging that the beta period could go on indefinitely.

Because it makes everything before "later on" kind of meaningless.

Where do you draw the line, though? You seem to be advocating for an essentially 2-tiered game where Tier 1 is "Do boring stuff for a long time" and Tier 2 is "Enjoy awesome stuff that's essentially useless because there's nowhere to go from here."

I doubt that's what Quenton was getting at. I don't know of too many (any?) good movies where almost nothing happens for the first 1h45m and then everything important happens within the last 15m. Nobody likes those movies, because they're a waste of time.

That said, I honestly don't believe that's the state Starbound is in currently. It already has got a lot going for it, but I do feel the early game is a bit lacking in variety, and it's impossible to know just how much that will change before release. That's a valid reason to be concerned.

I agree. I dislike that mechanic in Minecraft and I dislike it in Starbound. It's utterly pointless and serves only to distract from whatever activity you're currently engaging in.

Uh, actually, not starving does wonders for a person's overall health. Also, where do you think your body gets the energy and material to repair any wounds? It's not magic.

There will always be outliers. Just because a handful of people can accomplish something in record time doesn't mean the game should be balanced around those people.

Because Starbound is all about the realism...

Starbound takes a number of mechanics from Minecraft. If you haven't played that game, it's understandable that you'd be unaware of that particular mechanic. It took me a little while to realize and it only occurred to me that it might be possibile because I've played Minecraft, and Starbound's smelting is very similar to Minecraft's smelting.

The hunger mechanic is also from Minecraft.

All I want is a reduction in tedium. If the tedium is gone I can enjoy the fun parts of the game more easily.

What you consider tedium doesn't mean everyone does, the best thing to fix this is to just learn to get used to tedium.

To me the game seems rather to quick as it is, it needs to be slowed down partially.

I don't think it's all that slow after you learn the basics and get the right gear.

I make new chars all the time and have nearly everything I need (depending on the planet) ready to go by the time first nightfall hits. After that it's mining and exploring and upgrading here and there. Easy.

I feel the progression is a tiny bit too slow for the first few tiers, and the final few just blur past far too fast.

My biggest issue is pixels as parts of the crafting recipes, I find early game that is what slows me down the most. It adds a bit of grindy-ness to the system. Same with the fact you need one tier to craft the next. Most of the time I wouldn't otherwise bother making some of those part way tiers. I personally had the materials for a platinum pickaxe before I had enough gold to make my gold pickaxe. Same with when I am dealing with armor, needing full copper to make iron? I really disliked that.

Now once I was ready for my first boss I quickly took it down, cleared through beta for enough resources to throw together some gear, fought the next boss, and repeated the process all the way through.

I only recently got the game (New Years Eve), but I estimate once I figured things out and actually started making any kind of progression (after the game stopped literally giving me a step by step walkthrough and simply said "Make a distress beacon") my progression was maybe 7 hours long to burn through the tiers and hit what is the current "end-game". With over half of that happening pre-Penguin UFO while I built a base on a home planet, mined, set up farms, collected mass amounts of wood, mass amounts of plant fiber from plant fiber trees, and otherwise built a solid infrastructure. After that point I got a lot of coal together and sector hopped with quick mining trips in each sector to upgrade and fight the next big mean bad guy.

I felt little need to stop and explore other than a quick mining trip in the new sector while I progress up the tiers, and after the final boss for some tech and such from dungeons.

This is the issue, there is no need to explore while you progress up tiers. What is needed is some decent variety of loot which can help the player progress rewardingly faster than if you were to simply craft your way up, and is common enough to be worth seeking, but rare enough it isn't just handed to you. This would let people who want a quicker game to receive it, while those who want to craft are able to do so and still progress just as effectively, if a little slower paced.

Its more about exploration for me.
I would hate if the game progressed fast like any other game.

Why do you think Starbound needs to try and be better than Terraria? It is, but saying that it has to be is pretty stupid. This game wasn't trying to compete with Terraria. And how do you know everybody came from Terraria? That's also a very stupid assumption.
