Why is this game so SLOW PACED?

I dont mind if a game takes 5 hours to get past the first tier, if that first tier was worth the 5 hours it took. same goes for the entire game.
why pay $60 for a game where you dont have to do anything and you win in 1 hour, when you can pay $15 and you have to do SOMETHING to get ANYWHERE in the same 1 hour and still not be 1/10 done with the game
some math: 1/4 price * 10 times the play time = better for almost anyone you ask, but you say its worse because you didnt get to the end as soon
getting to the end doesnt give a sense of achievement unless you actually achieved something
grinding pixels? ya boring thats true, unless they find a way to make it fun like quests. if they dont then its up to the player to make it fun

Durability and a hunger system that makes going afk as a server owner impossible need to be removed. I'm glad that a couple people made stasis pod mods so that going afk won't make you die of hunger but in any case, a hunger system fails in every game except a Day-Z type game. In starbound it's completely stupid. The fact that eating food doesn't heal me at all and just contributes to some lame penalize-over-time game mechanic is stupid and baffling to me as a player.

If you need to go afk then log out of the game, filling your stomach doesn't some how make your body repair itself, I enjoy the hunger system myself, just wish finding recipes was not so annoying and there was a better emphasis on cooking said food.

All of this stuff can be rebalanced without sacrificing a sense of accomplishment. I personally never equate time with challenge. The two are very different things. My mother playing Animal Crossing all day long is far less challenging than a single 30 minute match of League of Legends.

I think the biggest advantage we have is the ability to mod the game. We can ditch pickaxes and start with drills. We can adjust the values for reagent quantities in recipes. We can add guns to the start of the game. While I generally agree with the OP, I am most interested in the addition of new features to the game, regardless of the way they are implemented. The more features, the more modding options.

And yes, I do understand that having to use mods to smooth things out would be annoying to some, but at least the option is there. Perhaps when the rest of the game content is implemented, such as quests, we will be pleasantly surprised by the final pace of the game.

Try reading what I said. If you host a server, logging out equates to turning off the server for your friends too. If you want to leave it running your character will starve and die over and over again until you come back. It may take a while each time but I guarantee it will happen.

how does hosting a server require you to be logged on
I can host a server for my friend and me and I can log off. even as far as close starbound and the launcher, but leave the console open.

Ah. Guess I'm still used to terraria, I thought that when I was hosting servers for my friends that I had to stay logged on all the time lol. Carry on.

The hunger system is still retarded though.

Ok, but again, you're complaining about a completely unfinished and unpolished game. You said you've been following game development for a while, correct? Then you should see your critical fallacies upon this game. What you're complaining about (in terms of linear branching, exploration, etc..) is EXACTLY what was pointed out by Tiy himself. This system, this ENTIRE tiered system is a placeholder for everything to come. Not only that, but this is barely even half the game and you're already complaining about exploration? You should know as an avid critic that you should know more about what you're complaining about, because i can tell you didn't do your research quite as much as you hint out.

Let's start off with digging underground. First of all, as an avid Terraria and Starbound player, are you really contrasting the two games? I think by now gamers should know not to compare games, because not only does that cause misconceptions, but also completely irrelevant topics to be complained about. I almost 100% guarantee right now that Starbound has more things to do digging underground than Terraria has as a POLISHED game. You do have some valid points, but a lot of those points are just pointing yourself in the completely wrong direction. When and where does a sandbox NOT encourage a player to put their own spin on things? To me, i think this is a straight perspective opinion, because in terms of exploration, where and what are Terraria and Starbound different? Does Starbound literally tell you to not explore, or is it the exact same way? Set up home, dig, find resources, and explore? Now you're telling us that Terraria encourages it, yet, you even stated it starts out the same way? That's what i don't understand. I think this opinion is more bias'd from a finished game rather than a critique TO the game. That's why i said you shouldn't be comparing Terraria and Starbound in the first place; primarily because, again, is a perfect example of a misconception.

As for the last paragraph, i could go on, but you stated "Maybe it'll get interesting." So i'll leave it at that, but as for that, i'm going to spew my last 2 cents. Everything you say here is perspective, nothing more. Everything you see in this game is all alpha, nothing more. If you expect that much out of not even a fully coded game, then i can't even imagine what you've said on other betas. This game is an unfinished game, nothing more. So if you already think everything here is worse than Terraria, then go play Terraria and wait until the game is set in stone -- because obviously you think this game is almost fully developed, and if that continues, more and more of these topics will inevitably show up again. But for my sanity, can you PLEASE actually read more in-depth into the game rather than spouting out bias opinions like this?

Food heals you, it gives you the same regen property then a stim pack. Just not the run of the mill bread and fried meat. Most other dishes you know or learn will do so you though.

Going by your statement about Terraria as well that you never explored Terrarias folder in the Steam directory then, because there was ALSO a dedicated server program, but hey, at least you admitted to being ignorant on this one, that's a step up.

Mate, i don't know how you haven't noticed this yet....but this game is NOT Terraria, NOT trying to follow in its footsteps either.

Half of the thread is "oh but in this other game i really like..." - great, guess what though.
Games might iterate, but they don't duplicate. It's its own concept.

Why the hell would food heal you instead of a medkit? Because the opposite sure makes more sense from both a player and a logical perspective.

I really don't see how people expect devs to just slave on a game for YEARS and then moan that they don't want their creation being plowed through in a mere day.

That illustrates your point a little better than your original post. See where you're coming from now.

That was the point I was trying to make, the impression I got from the OP was that you were complaning about the length of the journey, and how long it took to aquire better gear & resources, not the games actual mechanics.
To that I can only say its still early days and while core content is still being implemented the games pace will always be subject to change. I stand by my original reply though in that this isn't a problem per se, as in not some game breaking issue, but something I expect will be addressed as the game nears full release.

I personally feel that without perseverance there is no real sense of accomplishment. For me it's not enough for a game to be 'long' i.e lots of content, it has to be a struggle and an enjoyable one. Others clearly feel differently.

I played a few weeks ago and it was dreadfully slow paced. I don't know what changes have been made since because I got tired of playing as did my buddies. I look forward to seeing how the final game turns out but we are doing a disservice to the developers by pretending everything is sunshine and cookies. Protip: No one will get free game codes by sucking up to the devs. Just saying. :p Lets try and provide as much critical constructive feedback as we can so we can help IMPROVE the final product. Posts constantly repeating how much you love the game in it's current state really provide very little meaningful insight.

Do we really want Starbound to be as slow as an MMO? I hope the developers focus on quality rather than quantity. Slow progression can make a game last dozens of hours for a single character but I imagine there will be a lot of players who will get sick and tired of the monotony.

That is the point Mr.Klokinator, however, the character progress is highly dependant on player tactics itself,as the game has somewhere deep roots of True uncharted hardcore roleplay,it requires time and patience to enjoy it fully
Some individuals however got their character between first 5 hours into Tier 10

I like that game has evolved slow-paced,it makes people think about what they will do first, not counterstrike everything and i'm done here
It adds quality and massive diversion to the game,if it would be fast paced, most of people would miss the magic of the starbound...

    EDIT:
You should reconsider what have you wrote,we are in Beta stage, this is not the final product, and not even how it will look and how it is supposed to look,it may differ, read more about the game

Oh no, the horror of a dozen hours. Surely nobody has the patience for that in this wonderful generation.

Can you even hear yourself? Do you have any idea how long MMO's are in comparison?
You have droves of people telling you they beat the progression curve in less than a day...and yet you'd still clamor that it has to be an even shorter experience?

Lmfao, is this really how games are portrayed nowadays?
'it can't be too hard or people will quit' lmfao.

Such a dumbed down gaming society nowadays. I really wish people actually played classic games.

Without that one I would be already gone and never look back at this game.

Houston, we still have a fanboy-problem.

And again: You are complaining about people who are writing down what they don't like about the game in it's current state. That is far more helpful for the developers than, for example, writing that it's a sacrilege to do that because it's beta. Especially in every single thread of this kind since beta started.

I played classic games since 1978. I also had a teddybear back than that I don't use anymore, I developed. I cuddle better stuff now, and I want to play better games.
