Why is the Avali race mod so popular?

I like the Avali, and the work that was put into them, almost like it was meant to be another race in the game itself. On the server I play on, roughly 87% of the regulars on it are Avali, though I think it has more to do with the armor than anything.

Also, quoting the mod here, If we have Mayan Bird-people and Oriental Fish-people, why not Nomadic Space Raptors?

For me, it's the aesthetic of the furniture and decoration that draws me. The ultra high-tech orange and white art styling isn't something I would've expected for a nomadic race, but it creates a unique culture and tech combination. I suppose I find this contrast attractive.

I do have at least one gripe though. The character sprite seems kinda cluttered in a way that makes it hard to tell what it actually is. It took me a while to really identify the winged arms and raptor-like body, but I still have no hope at all selecting a personality in character creation.

Yeah I was looking at em, found the wiki too, like I have said, it's impressive, no doubt.
(And not mice people, but raptors lol)

Because they asked why it's so popular and I had never heard of it unlike other mods I have seen that were added to the game vanilla.

No. I'm saying that considering how popular the mod is, he must have been doing something in order to avoid hearing about it. Or maybe it's just more prominent in some parts of the forum than others.

I like them because they're not just a reskinned human. I'll most likely get a bit of hate for this, but i think Starbounds races are very unoriginal in terms of aesthetic design. All of them are just reskinned humans. There is no body, size or gameplay diversity between them, you just pick one you like the look of and go. But the Avali are actually different. And well done too. In my opinion, the Avali are superior to starbounds original races in every aspect, the only thing i'm willing to accept as criticism to them is if you actually like them or not.

Avali race looks neat; I've never used mods yet, but their appearance is quite striking.

I will say it's definitely an idea pushed by furries, but unlike the brony races the Avali look legitimate enough for the Starbound universe.

I never used the mod myself.. I tend to be a vanilla player when it comes to games, but make exemptions for UI tweaks/customization like chat mods or being able to move the toolbar somewhere else on screen.. The obvious exemption would be server side mods (like I had used in a Minecraft server I once played in) which you have no control over.. But even a MOSTLY vanilla gamer like myself will sing praises of Ryuujin's mod.. Seriously, he put in a lot of hard work into spriting, providing lore, and everything in between.. I personally don't use his mod, but I still like what he has done with the mod.. I like the concept, the character, and just... everything! Credit is given where credit is due..

Also, everytime I type the name, I swear I am getting it mispelled.. I might have gotten it right this time though.. I always forget if it is uu or ii in his name... I am pretty sure it is just one of those two that are doubled..

Uh... no. If that were the case, then the actual furry races (Sergals for example) would be higher up.

Because we Avali are cute and cuddly

Actually, trying to get an answer out of most regulars on the Avali Nexus would probably just scare you away.

I love the Avali because they're so DIFFERENT. Everything about them allures me... The aesthetics of both the creatures and their craft, their lore, and especially the focus on music (Ironic, since i'm an artist).

Actually, I didn't really play Starbound before the mod, and I was iffy on using the mod at all, but I'm glad I have.

I squee'd like little girl when I found an instrument merchant on a planet. :DD Bought every one they had.

Kind of funny though. I didn't know about that music focus, so I thought was pretty odd finding such a merchant.

I'd already found most of the instruments by the time I got lucky enough to find a music merchant, so the effect was lost. Well, they did have one I didn't, though I forgot which one.

I found a village on the fourth (I think?) planet I visited, which had the merchant. Also had an arms dealer, so I was able to put the weapon-upgrade bench to use for once.

Tying back to the topic, I'm curious why the Avali (and other weapon-related mods) don't use the random-weapon-generation system the rest of the game uses. Is it just too difficult to code at the moment?

  17. Cobalt Lightning

    Cobalt Lightning Existential Complex

Mostly. Trying to fix the generator to give you a specific-looking item is one of the obstacles which has to be overcome, as well as the projectile type.

That, and a lot of people don't like the look of an item/weapon that doesn't really match the rest of what they're wearing. World of Warcraft Transmogging, anyone?

What I mean is, why not allow randomized Avali guns? As far as I know, they already randomize weapons for the Vanilla races (or am I mistaken?).

  19. Wurmheart

    Wurmheart Subatomic Cosmonaut

Shouldn't be a issue of difficulty tbh, more likely because of the functions.
Randomgen guns can't be animated and don't have a charge mechanic, they need to have all 3 parts at similar sizes and just cost more time to make. But you gain the level scaling function, and ability to randomize names and even projectile types.
.gun is just easier to work with though, and i'm not sure all the other modders know you can call upon randomgen for recipes as well.

Some considerable hype was around the Avalis because of the quality and originality.

To be honest some of the fans are annoying. They worship the ground Ryu walks on and give you shit for not being "humble" like Ryu among other things.
