Why is everything energy

It's only a single clip's worth of ammo. How much mobility that buys you is entirely dependent on clip size and battle duration.

but with that, they can grab several.

the problem is, people complaining about how the game is.
    the current system is perfect...

the only, and i mean ONLY, flaws are OP weapons, which are rare, and if you find them, you deserve them.

In my opinion ranged weapons, at least high tier ones, consume far too much energy compared to the damage they deal. Especially fighting threat level 10 NPCs that can have 12k or more health. With the fact the current max energy limit is 500, and some of the more powerful weapons take 50-100 energy, per shot that's only 5-10 shots you'll get off, and usually they'll only be around half dead or so, and you'll be out of energy to shoot. Some other things though I feel shouldn't have energy costs at all, pulse jump, (Possibly) energy dash, and hunting bows I feel are in that list. Hunting bows are far too slow, and really don't do much damage even with a steel hunting bow (which is the most powerful one you can make currently) to even really merit an energy cost to balance them out since doing effective damage requires you to release the mouse button at a specific time. And double jump... this has to be the first game I've ever played that a double jump technique uses any sort of resources at all to function in.

Here is a simple situation that transcends balance and realism, If you are fighting a single npc, you can empty your energy pool using an assault rifle, and they will keep on coming, That is both underpowered, and unrealistic, when they can slice you in half with around three hits though a supposedly indestructible material. No matter what asinine idea you might have about balance, that is wrong and shouldn't happen in any game unless you are using a squirt gun. Also, DPS of guns right now is actually WRONG, considering that it only takes into account your damage per second while you have energy, With a bit of math, you quickly find out that most guns do less than 1000 Damage, at tier 10.

Are you talking about nightlies? I heard energy pools were doubled.

Well if they were doubled, that still doesn't solve the issue, Whether in real life or in games, an assault rifle does not go through a full clip killing 1 or 2 people. unless those one or two people are wearing 100 pounds of armor. or are giant mutant abominations. the clip in this case being your energy bar.

Someone playing nightlies will have to clarify - that's just what i remember them saying. There might be more to it than that.

I don't believe guns are balanced yet either. Regardless, you can't discount it being a balance/gameplay decision, calling it "asinine," then try to qualify it in a way that has nothing to do with balance (going back to realism squirt gun example).

The fact is dropped / generated weapons in general are super broken, either because they are useless or because they are way OP for your area of the game, and the main reason guns suck is because you can't craft them yet so they are ONLY acquired by this randomized drop pool.

Novakid will be a huge step in balancing weapons, because guns will become more consistent and planned due to being integrated into crafting.

The best balance I found between damage and energy costs is probably an avian blaster. Everything else... energy cost vs damage is just ridiculous. assault rifles are a semi close second, unless you go into rare/legendary/special bullet ones.

We need... guns and stuff... which instead of using energy, they use your pixels. Not just unrefined pixels either. Print them into pixel coins which took you forever to grind for. Crush our dreams and hopes by needing to fire our precious currency, yes!

Pixel guns might be kind of interesting to tell the truth. They literally had a 'coin gun' on terraria, so... yeah... xD late game, pixels are kinda useless and plentiful so it might give us something to use them on if they put one in actually. heh.

I might've come into this thinking it was an existential thing, but now that I've actually read the main post...

I think the energy energy system s fitting. I've experienced energy per shot ratios that'd blow people's minds both ways. Good and bad. The game isn't serious enough to make sense out of the system in a logical fashion. It's like trying to figure out the logic behind Borderlands' weapons.

"Oh! You got yerself a gun that costs a lot of money there. Too bad it uses 2 bullets per shot and has low damage!"

It's not meant to be a serious system by a long shot. It's just there to add variety to ranged combat. Sometimes you get a good one and sometimes you get a huge steaming pile of droppings. Either way it's still fun to comb the various markets to find a usable one that serves an actual purpose.

Now, the Novakid question comes to mind. Really, they should have stronger guns than the average, bought weapons. They don't stand a chance if they can only use guns. Or, they could side-step that and give them cutlasses, machetes, bowie knives or some old huge blade.

    It just is.

On a more serious note, I wouldn't mind ammo in the game by itself, I mean, it does make sense. However, I'm less sure about having ammo with special effects, extra power, etc... Terraria had that kind of stuff and it basically broke the game.

Also, guns that use bullets should still cost at least a bit of energy for balance reasons.

Because Nicholas Cage is energy, and when all is Nicholas Cage, nothing will hurt.
