Why is a lot of work put in to Starbound all of a sudden?

I remembered a while back when this game was supposed to be launched in December but it got delayed. Now a LOT of work is being put on this game. So was this game all that empty back then and was planned to get released back then? Why did Chucklefish decide to add an influx of improvements to the game after that delay all of a sudden? I'm just curious so I'm just asking this question.

they have been putting a lot of work on it since the start, the community asked them to be more vocal recently so they have.

It was a simple case of the developers misjudged how long it would take. No harm, no foul. Also, perhaps they had a different vision for Starbound back then, a more basic game, and then decided to turn it into something truly special. I don't really think anyone here has a good answer to your question.

It could also be that coding the groundwork for the game is a long, daunting task for a small team. Coding ain't easy, coding for a game is a nightmare.

Also, welcome to the community! I hope you stick around, we're a friendly bunch (Most of us). We keep the unfriendly ones locked under the stairs.

They also seem to be more open regarding what they're doing. The daily updates and the roadmap, for example, are there to keep the community in the loop.

There was always a lot of work put into the game. It was supposedly a Dec launch.

I feel like theve kicked it up due to them being near the end result for the beta. Which is soon.

Also, im pretty sure over 1mil$ in pre-orders in little time is enough to spur ANY game creators into working extra hard.
I know it'd make me work harder as an artist REAL quick.

I think the majority of the development team put in 8+ hour work days and often work Saturdays and Sundays as well. I think most of the community understands how much work they're putting in, though I do recall a recent thread calling the developers "lazy" that was quite offensive to the team, especially considering how much of their personal lives they're sacrificing to put out a videogame for a very impatient community. Anyhow, they've also hired on more staff, progress is being made faster and now that they've completed the "core" of the game they can move onto the bigger things that are easier to show off.

It's also relevant to note, for those who haven't heard or forgot, that The Devs had to work jobs to pay the Bills until the Pre-Order was such a wild success that they were able to live off the Pre-Order money & ditch their (possibly *bleep*sack) jobs to work on the game full time. ;)

Also most of the early work is background engine stuff that really isn't all that interesting to show or see. Now that the mechanisms are in we can start to see them in action.

Very much this. I think they have been keeping a relatively steady pace, but now we know what they are doing day-to-day.

At the tail end of a project developers tend to finish up implementation that's been worked on for the duration.

Honestly it would be better in my opinion if they didn't have to worry about roadmaps and daily updates and only had to focus on the game.

The roadmap, perhaps, but I do like the daily updates. It's nice seeing how far the game's getting every day.

For me honestly it's more torture then help now I understand why big developers don't announce a game till it's almost done.

Yeah, I get what you mean, but I have other games to keep me busy until SB releases.

Also, off-topic, Serenity is an awesome name. Makes me want to go get a nice quiet drink in an Alliance friendly bar on Unification Day, if you catch my drift.
