Yes he did retire, willingly. IF you mean early forced retirement suggested by the company he worked for. Then yes he left willingly. And yes a lot of people defended him when it happened including Mohommad Ali. But it basically ended his carreer because he called the wrong person a monkey, and he ment it innocently, but it did not matter because he offended a LOT of people.

I never said he wasn't a nice guy or meant what he said, I just said he lost his job. And being forced into retirement to save face is not a good way to go. I remember when it happened my family use to have arguments about whether he should have retired. It was really rather sad.
