Wild West culture. Just... wild west culture.

I've never understood the fascination people have with this time period. Its not a particularly long time period, nor is it a particularly innovative one. Nothing happened of worth in the "Wild West", it was just boring, depressing pre-modern age life in a boring depressing pre-modern age desert. Not to mention a crapload of genocide which is often glorified by some of the older movies. (You know, the whole "kill Native-Americans" and invading their land thing).

Probably one of the most embarrassing times in Human history, but people love it for some baffling reason. It was literally the backwater of a country that didn't even matter yet.

Most embarrassing times in human history? seriously? I don't even think it would make the top 10. I don't really love or hate the time period myself but I think its interesting enough backdrop for a video game. What time period in history didn't involve some type of war or persecution? The entire history of the human race is fairly bloody.

I respect your opinion. Personaly i like the old west a bit but i understand others dont.
The reason i think it is like this was because the other suggested backstory for the Novakids whould have been harder to impliment.

Fairly? I would say that it is the embodiment of blood! We are terrible arse's. Like in India, 1918, General Dyer ordered his troops to fire into a park full of non violent freedom revolutionaries. He did not even take some of them to the hospital! And this isn't even near the top five!

We like it because it was sort of interesting, there's a reason why a euphemism for lawlessness is "the wild west". It was a time of danger and gunfights, where the sheriff was a tough looking guy wearing a stetson with a six shooter on his hip, where you had horse races and smugglers and a new frontier which was full of mystery. Lots of things happened of worth in the wild west. Men died, loves were found and lost, trains were robbed by bandits who also took towns; and the one lone sheriff took them back because he fucking could.

We like the wild west not because one big thing happened, but because a whole shitton of little things did. And that's just what life is.

Hey, it's his opinion, he's entitled to it even if he implies they should be fact. That's okay. That's why there are 7 races.

Heck, I'm not playing the Glitch because I think the clothing of that time period looks ugly. That's all!

It is rather out of line for Sousuke to make claims about human history like that, and I think that's for another time and place, but I recommend just letting it go. Nobody's making him play Novakids.

Its embarrassing enough that people ignore the persecution that occurred. Maybe one of the most embarrassing is a misnomer, uninteresting and boring however would be spot on. Most Western films only ever focus on the locations or points of time in the Old West in which nothing that matters is actually happening. Most of the time we follow some douche bag with a gun and his gambling/drinking troubles. Why is that glorified?

'Out of line' they are actually pretty valid claims. The Old West had nothing much going on for it, and the only points that Westerns like to focus on are those points after the American Civil War and Before the American Civil war, they rarely focus on anything important that occurred.

GOOD! That is the truth. We Indians like films about ridiculous stuff like Kya Hua Tera Vaada. Bull, I tell you. At least Amerifats like films about something worthwhile.

Correct me if i am wrong, but can't you simply dissasosiate from the "wild west culture" of the Novakid by simply NOT wearing any wild west-theme items? Just because they have a wild west schtick dosn't mean you can't wear items that makes you look like a samurai or a space marine.

1789 to 1910 is hardly a short period of time really. There's a whole century in there.

And I think they went with the aesthetic because of the Novakids lack of a permanent home and curiosity. It makes sense, space being the final frontier and all.

Personally I'm torn between playing one or a Glitch when beta is out at the moment.

Well theres other factors. I don't like that they have short attention spans and don't value knowledge and I don't like their name. But the Western Culture is one of the big things.

EDIT: Personally the fascination with the Old West is as baffling as fascination with the Victorian era. The movies/tv shows/literature written about them never feature any of the important events of the time and instead focus on people who don't do anything worthwhile.

Huh, I thought it might turn into a History lesson. No sarcasm. Because people will write about true terrible things, and other people will read them. It will allow them to know more. If they are still interested, they will Google it and learn more. But if they arn't, then they will still remember the brief story of it in their mind. That is learning. Also, I am pretty sure you can cross dress and stuff, soooo, Glitch and Novakid dress haters can wear AWESOME human clothing

For most people the Wild West represents the idea of complete freedom, self-made law (including vengeance), exploration and taming the unknown.
So much for the positive and glorified aspects.
But I think what really happened in human history isn't important in the context of a video game.

Funny how people ignore the genocide, horrible hygiene, lawlessness and general disarray of that time period.

Read my third line there. We are in the context of a video game and while the Novakid were inspired by the wild west theme they don't need to mirror or exactly represent that time period from human history.

Edit: It is not meant to make people forget, it is meant to be awesome in its own right. If you wanted the truth you'd play an educational game.

Also I find it funny that there is a topic on why someone doesn't like the Novakid, but you don't see toipcs like this on the other races.

To be fair the same could be said about many time periods.

I totally understand why you would dislike the racial ADHD and the western gimmic, but it's not like they affect gameplay and can simply be ignored. Unless you are planning on playing on a roleplaying server that is.
