I know there has recently been a lot of dispute on whether we should have an earlier or later release, and I have decided to change my viewpoint to hope for a later release.

My main reason for this is the limited time left in 2012. Many of you may argue against this, but I believe to announce a release date so close to that time, or to even not release the date at all, would be bad marketing. It wouldn't allow a build up of excitement and instead would rush the process.

So I now hope we don't get it until 2013, for Chucklefish's sake.

It just wouldn't make any sense. You don't release a game without letting people know that they'll be able to buy it soon.

    It happened with Terraria.
For totally unintended reasons on the part of the developer...but it happened.

I'm a bit more worried that if the game is delayed to 2013, it will be March of 2013, on account of the "conventional knowledge" that launching your game right after Christmas is a death sentence for normal revenue (Christmas bills).

Launching a indy game in March is just as bad. March line up, in no way complete, already has:

    03/01/13 - Metro: Last Light
    03/01/13 - Company of Heroes 2
    03/05/13 - Tomb Raider
    03/05/13 - SimCity (2013)
03/05/13 - South Park: The Stick of Truth
03/12/13 - God of War: Ascension
03/19/13 - Gears of War: Judgment
    03/XX/13 - Fuse
    03/XX/13 - Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist

    And the month before it:
02/05/13 - Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
    02/12/13 - Aliens: Colonial Marines
02/19/13 - Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
    02/19/13 - Crysis 3
    02/26/13 - BioShock Infinite

Granted, some of those games can be further pushed back or around, and Starbond isn't really in direct competition with any of those games, but you certainty wouldn't want it to get swept under the carpet in a mix of triple-A titles.

I personally feel we should let the devoloper decide when their game is ready for release weather or not that is in 2012 or 2013 i could care less but i want them to feel to feel satisfied and un rushed
I would prefer it earlier but i want the game to be ready more so i can wait for as long as it takes as long as it is good

    I totally agree with you
like i said before : to develop a game under pressure because of a solid realese date will only make problems (bugs or something much worse)

If the devs think it's done before new years, I won't disagree with them. They're the ones that understand their progress best. They'll still add patches and content updates afterwards anyway, for at least a year!

Yes, the only issue I see with this is the marketing. Starbound has a big fan-base, but to suddenly drop the game from heaven into our hands might not be the greatest idea. I think a release date is necessary, and generally a few months before too.

Many games on that list were already pushed back; especially those in February.
Kind of puts into perspective how strong that trend is in gaming.

The nice thing about indie titles is that they have more flexibility for their release schedule, since they don't have to coordinate their launch with mass-advertising schedules.

There are about 100323123923 threads already on the topic of a release whether "We want it NOW" or "Delay as much as you want!", I have an opinion, but iv'e already told it in atleast one of these...
can you please stop opening those threads and combine them all together?

I understand delaying the game for bugfixing, but not for feature creep. Leave that stuff for monthly content patches and hey, I'll say it, paid DLC. Chuckle fish won't be able to develop the game indefinitely on initial sales and the trickle thereafter. I wouldn't at all mind buying some degree of content as long as we are also getting a reasonable amount for free.
My example is killing floor. Totally optional content that can even be shared with other players, at extremely low prices has kept the game running and company subsidized (Along with other releases here and there) for a few years now, and it's just a skill based zombie survival romp developed into a more professional product from a simple unreal mod.

Like a lot of people have said, I wouldn't mind a surprise release.
Because you never had any expectations beforehand as to when to expect a release so no matter what you are happy.
