I believe the middle point shifting referred to, say, if this year the middle point was 100,000 years ago then next year it would be 100,001 years ago.

I've been meaning to get back to that. You said you weren't attracted to other species and I was curious how exactly you drew that line.

I have no problem with the way science defines species, I just understand that it's completely arbitrary. Every species has the middle point that I brought up, and that middle point can be placed literally anywhere.

If the two can breed, would you consider them the same species? If not, why?

I'm pretty sure science doesn't know exactly what keeps two species different species from being able to breed. The slightest change in a chimp's DNA and we might be able to breed with it without actually changing its physical appearance. (This conversation just got weird.)

On topic: Do you find the other non-human races in the game attractive? They aren't human, so clearly your answer is no. Why is this an anti-apex thread and not just a human elitist thread?

I'm not sure why de-evolving =/= remaining smart. As it so happens to be, the previous "stage" of human evolution had a larger brain than we have today. So you could have the knowledge and tech from a human age and simply increase your brain capacity (through de-evolving) I do not see the problem...

Neanderthals were not actually a previous stage of humanity. Read up on the subject please.

    EDIT

Generally doesn't work like that, there are a range of factors in play, two percent is a huge difference. Although I'd like to know where you got the idea from, any sources?

That being said we are actually making decent strides in human-animal hybrids, however its made illegal in most countries to bring such hybrids to term for "ethical" reasons. The US wont even entertain research, the UK allows embryos that split up to a certain point, and then they need to be terminated. I'd recommend reading up on the topic.

I don't find them attractive, however I don't perceive them to be as ugly as the Apex. Furthermore the Apex being ugly in my opinion is not the only reason I dislike them, as you can see in the OP. Also questioning the reason behind the thread isn't on topic.

I love how you assume, I was insinuating that aliens were responsible. That's not the case at all, I completely believe that humans made the structures I've been talking about. We just can't explain how they managed many of them with the technology they had. It should have been beyond them, but that's in large part because we don't know what they did know, we don't know everything they had at their disposal, we're looking at paintings, and ancient tools and archaic texts to decipher some of it.

I infact never once said it was aliens, if you somehow read it that it was, I'm sorry that you seem to have such a hard time reading things as they are written I truely am, apparently both with my posts and the Apex. I realize I'm on "ignore" which is probably for the better since we can stop flooding this forum post with TLDR posts.

:yeahhhh: Chimps aren't a subspecies of us like say dogs are to wolves. This is one case where its very clear. Even if you flip a few dna switches so to speak, it would be like cats and dogs. Where the line diverged was so far back genetically, there is just no way without radical genetic alteration.

Unlike say, how they now theorize Neanderthals probably interbreed with what would become humans.

All this armchair science just draws me back in.. I can't escape it.. even when I should.

Don't you see it folks, the answer lies in bananas!

The Apex simply learned about the earthly piece of fruit and started mass producing it, and they all ate so many bananas that they simply devolved back into apes. The bananas also enhanced their thinking capabilities during their (d)evolution, due to a property that only influenced their brain-structure, and made them super-smart! :monkey:

Then, the bananas themselves became sentient due to the resistance-developing effect evolution has, and the first great war between the Apex and the Bananas had started: The Bananolypse.

While I can understand not liking a race because of the looks, but not liking the lore based on it's possibility is just meaningless. I understand where you are coming from, but the lore is made for roleplaying purposes, and to strike your imagination. While you are taking this waaaay too seriously, you have some good arguments.

I'm also genuinely suprised this thread wasn't locked or deleted. It's produced a bunch of negativity towards an aspect of the game, which usually that kind of stuff gets deleted pretty fast. :p

When 97% of our DNA is just useless, 2% makes a pretty big difference. I'm just saying that without knowing the actual reason for the inability to crossbreed certain species, who's to say that it isn't as easy as flipping a switch? (Although, it most likely isn't)

Questioning your opinion of the other races is at least close enough to on topic, though. From what you were saying, it seemed that you didn't like them because they weren't, for lack of a better word, f*ckable. (Can I say that here?) I was wondering if that applied to other species.

    EDIT:
BTW, it seems like you missed my first post.

I dunno, could be the main story the Apex eggheads in charge puts out on something that's actually a conspiracy to keep the common folk weak. Of course the lore team would have something like that instead of the real story if it was part of the main quest/ a big side quest.

That 2% is why. 2% is a huge difference dna. In other words.. its the parts that is saying what should be done. If its to different.. its incompatible. Scientist have known this.. for a good deal of time now.

Let me stress that: Scientist know why most species cannot crossbreed. They aren't closely related enough. <-Edited because someone wanted to nitpick. ;p

Again.. Species.. is a somewhat loose definition compared to evolutionary lines, branches. A scientist can tell you exactly why genetics will let a dog and wolf interbreed but not a chimp, and it will be because of the genetic difference of how far apart they are being on different branches. Science knows why this works.

Is that why you put people on Ignore for not sharing your opinion? Like people such a Regal Kain have mentioned... there are two MAJOR flaws with your argument at the moment.

    1) You are assuming we know absolutely everything about our own reality/universe/dimension (whatever). How long did Humans think the world was flat, or that it was the center of the Solar System. How long was was the Atom hidden from us, or the Neutron within it? To pretend that we as a culture/species who have really only made big strides into science in the last thousand years (which is being extremely generous) know everything about a Universe so big we can't even SEE it all is flawed. Heck we don't even know everything about our own planet / Solar System, let alone what variations of life might be out in the universe somewhere.

    2) You are assuming the reality/universe/dimension (whatever) that Starbound takes place in, is the same as our own. Which is completely wrong since well... we aren't as technologically advanced as the Humans in the game (to touch the tip of the iceberg) and no where have they mentioned that this is a futuristic representation of our existence.

Someone may want to inform the Mule that he is no long allowed to exist then... "The mule, a cross between a female horse and a male donkey or ass..." Horses, and Donkey's don't meet up in a Classification group until the Family: Equidae. So that is Species and Genus that are separating the two... which happens to be the same place where Humans and animals like Chimpanzee and Gorillas meet up as well.

I'll concede to your edit. :) Yes, they have a good grasps on what prevents different families (from a classification stand point) from being able to breed, and heck even some of the species that CAN breed, end up sterile as a result.

I placed him on ignore because he's an ancient alien conspiracy theorist. It was less because he didn't share my opinion and more because after reading through his post it was clear he had a very limited understanding of biology but was the kind of person to hold to beliefs despite that. If you'd like I can respond to him, however it would just end up being a reiteration of already made points on my end and his failure to understand them and hence reiterate his own points.

You're comparing our knowledge of physics to our knowledge of biology. We have a very firm understanding of how evolution works and we have a pretty decent knowledge of genetics. If the Apex are based on the same form of life that we are (that is, carbon based, DNA and RNA, bases adenine, thymine, uracil, cytosine and guanine etc.) then we know what their genetics would bet like. Regal made the incorrect postulation that you HAVE to become physically primitive in order to advance mentally, which isn't the case. The VEP technology, if it did have a tradeoff, is one of the most roundabout methods of genetic engineering I've ever seen. Furthermore, Regal claimed it was a genetic mutation that forced already existing individuals to become Apex within ten years. If thats the case, the backstory makes even less sense, thats too large a change to an individual at once for them to handle.

I'm not assuming we know everything about the universe, I know that we have a very firm understanding of evolution and genetics.

Firstly, I never said the universe of Starbound was our own, I don't know why you think I did.
Secondly, so your argument is that since this isn't the same universe as our own, life functions completely differently. Why? Why would life function any differently?

I don't recall saying that hybrids don't deserve to exist. Furthermore the mule is not viable offspring, they are all sterile, and incapable of furthering their genome. It isn't a species in itself, its a hybrid of two difference species. Even if a human were to somehow produce an offspring with Gorillas and Chimpanzees it wouldn't be viable, just as the mule isn't viable.

Furthermore, you're basing the closeness of genetics on whether or not animals are in the same family, it doesn't work like this. For example, Chimpanzees Gorillas and Humans are in the same family, however humans share 98% (although some sources claim 99%) with chimps, and 96% (although some sources claim 98%) with Gorillas. We're all part of the same family as science defines it, but the degree to which our genetics are shared differs.

At first I thought it was kinda mean to say this stuff because i think all this is doing is causing tension and not much friendly conversation which is what i like on a forum <3. However it is an opinion so if someone disagrees with it it's their choice to express it or simply just flutter on by so tbh there isn't anything wrong here.
