Why I hate the Apex

I understand that you really don't like some things because of some reasons, and even though it's nitpicking and over analyzing 2D Space Apes, It's fine. But can you please stop posting it in general? Post it in offtopic or make a blog about disliking the many inaccuracies of starbound races and link it in your signature. Or just make a master thread about it; but please stop posting it in general. It's just really fucking annoying, man.

 

In both the Avian and Glitch lore there's mention of a hyper-advanced race flying around playing gods with everyone, and generally being d***s. I'd guessed that the Apex had gotten their evolutionary technology from these guys, hence the 'deal with the devil' type trade. Also, the totalitarian government based around the tech totally fits these guy's MO (I have only browsed over the Avian's page lightly, so I could be wrong).

 

Everyone is entitled to there opinion and to be honest I do not have
a problem with the Apex back story, it's sci-fi after all I can suspend
my disbelief of a chemical/drug/process that could do what it did to them.

I'm more personally impressed that despite the price they all
jumped in to advanced the species, I do not think it said anything
about rebellion or resistance to the V.E.P itself.

Opinions! Opinions Everywhere!! The only real problem with the Apex is the wording in their lore, as Corsair said, it should be reclaiming not devolving. As for the ugly comment, meh, humans are not that much prettier nor are the Glitch, or the rest of the selection for that matter.

 

Even though I do not like the Apex, I find their backstory rather interesting. The forced evolutionary route they are taking is actually rather sensible, trying to capture potential useful traits that have vanished... and learning hot to live with the baggage that may come along with it. As the old saying goes: "You wished us to give you the vision of the eagle, and so we did. The beak and feathers are free."

 

Come on now guys...opinions are nice, but lets not get too belligerent with them.
There is no use in getting riled up over someone else's opinion, and there's really not a point to bash something just to bash it!
Lets all try and get along... I mean hey, when it comes down to it, it IS just a game. And games are about fun! If you want to pick apart the lore, and that's what you find fun, go for it! If you want to be the Apex, more power to you! I mean, debate is fine, but lets not take out the civility...

 

I mislike the Apex purely because they look like chimpanzees with terrible hairdos

I know, my opinion, they have a nice backstory and a good planned bonus and kickass armor but HHUUURGHH it's hard to make them look good in the character creator

 

The description assumes apes are "less evolved" than humans, which also doesn't make a lot of sense.

Apes and humans have evolved to adapt to their respective environments.

 

I'm rather surprised at the negative responses the OP has gotten regarding his opinion here. I think he's absolutely right, and the only real reason for one to express their opinion is to open it up to public scrutiny; in essence, the best opinions to discuss seem, at least to me, to be negative ones. After all, these are the opinions about things that need improvement, no? And as such warrant discuss to either improve the perceived problem or correct the holder's misunderstandings.

On topic, the Apex are perhaps my least favorite race, but then again I don't intend to play as anything but a Human or Glitch. I can agree that the de-volution backdrop seems a bit unnecessary, but I intend to simply ignore it. I'll stop there as I don't have much constructive to add.

Hate is a fairly strong word. I do not see them as a bad race what-so-ever, their lore is quite interesting and it somewhat reminds me of Nazi-Germany with super science, which, of course, is quite awesome. Although, yes, appearance isn't the strongest side.

 

Harr, touche. Its more the fact they just look like humans but with a bit more hair is what makes me put off them. Every race seems like its trying to be as different from human but still as humanoid as it can be.. then theres the monkey people. By odd I mean when I look at each race. There all there own thing with a unique look.. then theres humans and monkeys. There just isnt enough difference for me. Still there okay, Really depends on what there armor does and other perks if im going to play them or not .3.

I don't fancy Apex myself, for close reasons to OP.

The thing that bugs me in their "physical de-evolution" is the fact that apes are actually better than humans in most physical activities. It is we who are "de-evolved (degraded) physically" from our common ancestor, of course, "to evolve mentally". Of course, this is gross simplification, because I bet that modern average human male will be able to beat an average male of australopithecus in unarmed combat, even without any martial arts training, just because we are noticeably larger. But modern aprs (excluding gibbons, obviously) are stronger than humans. Chimpanzees, being our closest relatives, and not that different in size, are way more fit physically. I won't say that it is impossible to beat up a chimp in unarmed combat, but, well... it's risky. And gorillas are obviously way more physically imposing than humans.

So, further physical degradation definitely won't bring us closer to our more savage cousins, whose bodies are more suited to live in wilderness without gifts of civilization such as clothing, medicine or purchaseable hamburgers. I'd say that physically degraded humanoids with enhanced mental capabilities should look like standard "gray" aliens. Or sectoids from X-Com.

Now, this lore can be somewhat tweaked in my opinion. What if Apex did not de-evolved. What if they, by some reason, decided to bring both their frail human-like bodies and their average human-like minds closer to paragon state? Now they are perfectish beings. They are supposed to be smarter than humans, and with ape-like bodies they probably are more strong and agile. The only drawback they have is appearance, but this is mostly personal preference anyway.

So, now they are snotty snubs who thinks that only practical things like IQ and physical capabilities do matter, and they have both. They are cross-breed of nerd and jock, thinking that they got better of two worlds, and cover doesn't matter. Well, sure, there are people who will agree with this statement, and people who won't. Apex think they are better than people who are saying that they are ugly, and these people just think that Apex ignore the obvious. Nice conflict, I think.

 

Personally I don't like the idea of the race purely because it's a reference to Planet of the Apes and that movie bored me to tears, no offense to the people who love it, and the idea of intelligent monkeys.
