Generally speaking not every story can be a winner. Not only that, but regardless of logic, it's not real and it can be however it needs to be. You don't know that evolution doesn't work that way in this world. I mean, there are going to be people made of fire(I'm assuming not actually made of fire, but I haven't read any lore. You get the idea.) so that must mean that some rules of this reality do not apply.

One thing you have to take into account, and this mostly applies to fantasy and not sci fi, the rules of a world are different than our own. Unless it is stated somewhere else in the lore that 'evolution' works in a specific way, it could work far to the contrary. This is one of the many reasons why 'magic' is an often joked about concept since it literally doesn't make sense in most fantasy stories. When you apply real logic and make it into an element, or combination of elements, and start to explain it scientifically it either breaks down and makes no sense or becomes more than just 'magic'.

That's kind of getting off track, but the idea is that you need to take every 'world' and remember that unless they are directly based on our universe, as in a 'true story', then they might work differently than our own.

That said, I haven't read any of the lore pertaining to starbound yet as I'm extremely hard to please when it comes to that kind of stuff so I try to avoid it at all costs or I'll start to dislike a game the same way I dislike league of retcons or world of everyone is corrupt: retcon city.

I would like to apologize if I came off as an asshole. It was not my intention. I was using my cell phone and typed it up quickly without much thought. Reading it, I realize it came off as fairly rude.

On another note, I find myself mostly agreeing with the OP. I don't really find the Apex disgusting and I would consider playing one, but I am not a fan of the lore. It just seems a bit sloppy. I'm a huge fan of sci-fi but most things in sci-fi are good because they have a nice level of plausibility mixed in with the fantasy. Honestly a good edit while keeping many of the same concepts could really add a lot to the Apex.

I'd like to say that I don't dislike the Apex. I just can't take them as seriously as the other races, so far.

    I like the Apex.
Probably wouldn't play as one but the idea of super intelligent monkeys amuses me.

The whole reverse-evolution thing makes me think of the old Super Mario Bros. movie.

    Science FICTION. Fiction =/= fantasy.

    All of my what.
Fiction: Fiction is the form of any work that deals, in part or in whole, with information or events that are not factual, but rather, imaginary and theoretical—that is, invented by the author.
Fantasy: Fantasy is a genre of fiction that commonly uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary plot element, theme, or setting.

From what we've read so far, Starbound is going to include themes from both genres. Many games do this, with Rift being a prime example of a recent one, with it even being the base of the two factions.

So, Starbound is a Sci-Fi Fantasy game.

I don't recall insulting anyone else. Mind keeping this kind of crap to yourself?

Yes, you've just reiterated that fiction and fantasy are not the same thing.

I haven't seen many fantasy aspects of the game. It may be that I'm just ignorant of them, could you provide some examples?

Fiction is anything that is made up.

    Fantasy Fiction.
    Science Fiction.

    They're both genres of fiction.

Yes, thus saying that fantasy = fiction is incorrect. All fantasy is fiction, not all fiction is fantasy.

What sci-fi universes have you taken inspiration from for this game? It looks awesome by the way :)

Despite the setting, I think there's actually more fantasy present in Starbound than hard sci-fi. Though there's an awful lot of inspiration from Doctor Who :p

as for fantasy aspects, I'll get back to you once I finish writing up the RP post I'm working on.

Its only really fantasy in that like Dr.Who.. they probably are going to gloss over the science part and focus on the flavor then the babble.

Its fully about the adventure in that show, instead of the more (fictitious)science bent Startrek takes. Most of the time.

Saying Fantasy = Fiction is correct.
Saying All Fiction = Fantasy is incorrect.

I never once said all fiction is fantasy, please quote me where I said this was the case.

Fact is, Starbound is both a Sci-FI and Fantasy themed game.

And again, I haven't seen any features that lead me to believe it is a fantasy themed game. I may have missed them, rather than quote Tiy who may be using poor word choice, could you show me the features that lead you to the conclusion that Starbound is both Sci-Fi and fantasy?
