You work at keeping your pet happy and fed and so on. The pet helps you at stuff. Sounds good to me...

We're just discussing stuff, chill out. By your logic we shouldn't be discussing the game altogether as it's coming out no matter what.

I'm fairly sure you're completely wrong here. The $500,000 and $750,000 goals were more of a reward, I'm certain Tiy believed we'd easily surpass those goals. When you first put a game up for pre-order like this the numbers could be unpredictable, which is why they were surprised. But after watching it for a few days I guarantee they were confident that the pre-orders wouldn't just randomly stop and that those goals were easily achievable at the rate we were going.

I dont care about starter pets, but if you get a xenomorph as a pet... that would be pretty sweet

What I hope about pets is that I don't have to have a pet.

I think my absolute favorite thing about these threads is that they essentially boil down to three arguments, one which I find hysterical(y depressing):

    1) "I can't believe the devs would use money that didn't come from me to make unplanned, additional features I don't like! This seriously impacts my future enjoyment based on purely theoretical situations and assumptions!"
    2) "Well, it is a bit underwhelming compared to the other stretch goals, but whatever. It's optional."
    3) "I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE STARTER PETS."

They don't owe you an entire expansion pack in a stretch goal. They don't owe you any stretch goal, for that matter. The criticisms to be made about the stretch goals are questions of possibility (should it be better compared to the others, can they do better based on various limiting factors), not demands based on personal tastes (this isn't good enough, I want more). Given what the devs have told us (and they've been very honest and transparent about the process), it makes sense for them to do starter pets so they don't distract themselves from making the core game by promising extravagant features after blazing past their stretch goals.

Really, once the devs said "Yeah, we're looking to do something that isn't code intensive," it was kind of a sealed deal, as there don't seem to be many people on this forum who have any idea how game development and coding works, and thus plausible suggestions were extremely limited.

Also, question for the people who fall into the first camp and make the argument "I hate stupid cosmetic things all over the place clutters the screen": is TF2 your worst nightmare, or is it literally Hell for you?

Final question, for people who fall into the first camp and make the argument "But if they have functionality, they aren't optional": are you planning to take your MLG Starbound/Terraria skills to EVO 2013?

Ergh, I just wish Molly didn't say, "We do promise we'll make pets more than just boring vanity objects." because that'll actually encourage their usage instead of just making them something that's easy to shrug off.
Best case scenario: They release the beta at the 990,000 dollar mark, or the pet can preform whatever their functions are from the ship.
Also at the same time, I feel like they're just going to start adding stretch goals with the goals as something that'll already be implanted regardless, or at least I hope so.

I mean, the pets are an okay addition that seem make their way into almost every game inevitably. In the end though I don't think that it was worthy of being the stretch goal for 1 million. They could always continue creating extras such as pets as add-ons that would come after the game has already been released. Or new, optional content that you can buy in a store or something.

I have no issue with them being in the game, I would prefer they have some actual function however, having a bunch of pixels running around my feet whilst achieving nothing helpful may be a nuisance, and yes, I know they are optional but I am not a monster, I am not going to leave Mister Tiddles on the ship just because he doesn't carry loot for me.

Arguably, the real monster is the one who'd take Mister Fluffykin down to the planet where he may fall in lava or be eaten by fat pig-men.

I just hope they're either completely unintrusive, or completely optional. If they're for looks alone and do nothing, I'll be free to simply not have one. If they do provide some form of bonus and I'm stuck having one if I want to benefit from it, they damn well better not get in the way of me placing blocks or attacking monsters. If I click on a pet just once while trying to perform another action, I'll be very displeased.

Maybe this is just a result of playing MMORPGs for years, but I barely even notice vanity pets anymore. Regardless, I can't help but think that some of the pet nay-sayers are being more than a little melodramatic.

i get it, people dont like having a pet from the start of your game, but did you read the whole plan for the goal? capturing! you can capture, possibly train pets, AND combined with the possibility of reviving dinosaurs? am i the only one not seeing the chance of the two going hand in hand here? i think THAT is what makes it a worth while stretch goal, one that needs time to make

  19. Ravenholme

    Ravenholme Big Damn Hero

Er, those features were already going to be in the game. The Starter Pet system just allows you to have a race specific starter pet which won't give you an undue advantage.

And I am completely okay with that.

I'm still unsure of why these threads exist, but to address the issue of these awful, horrible devs trying to add content to the game, (nearby man's monocle falls off) I have a reformed stretch goal idea.

    That's better than pets, right?
