Why does StarBound not have controler and or Logitec controler compatability?

You serious? Always? As in "in EVERY single case with NO exceptions"?

    Anyway.
There is literally nothing in Starbound that couldn't be done perfectly fine with a controller without having to dumb the game down.

I don't see how an auto target system is necessary for a controller. You can change your character's facing (left or right) with the right stick which is all you need for melee combat and for ranged combat you can still use the right stick (assuming it's analog).

No, Starbound is not perfect for a controller but it shouldn't be too hard to adapt for one and since they're porting it to the Playstation (and possibly other consoles) it's going to happen whether you like it or not.

In all honesty this controller vs. keyboard debate just reeks of geek-boy impotence.

Who's being hostile? Dan Fu seems slightly hostile about it. I'm all for controller. The fact of the matter is that it was designed for KBM. Nothings going to change that fact. They would have to do quite a bit of redesign. Simple as that. Wrap your heads around it.

I think there are more important things than controller support at this time

Um yes actually. Half the console games these days don't even have enough functions to use the full controller. Anything that adds a controller cuts out access to certain features because you do not have nearly enough buttons.

This game is currently in beta and you would assume controller support would be last on the priority list.

Although I don't think controller support should be a priority 1 item, it should not be ignored, nor be a last priority. Some people genuinely find gamepads easier to use than KBaM. I for one can't play driving games or precision platformers without my F310 (nor am I even allowed near a VTOL in Planetside without it).

I don't think an argument on which is better is helpful.
    It's all about preference.

And unfortunately, I cannot see a way that a controller would work with the controls of this game.

Has no one here played Terraria on Xbox 360? It controls with a gamepad quite nicely. I actually prefer the Xbox version to the PC version because I find a gamepad more comfortable.

That is why the argument exists. Controllers are just not efficient for this. They have to do a design from the ground up just to make it work.

β mostly that, wait till full release for controller support.

Ditto. I even thought the iphone version of Terraria was pretty good.

Starbound was announced for Playstation back in August and from my understanding Chucklefish has been thinking of a console release far before that so there is almost certainly going to a controller option for the game. It may not be as "efficient" and they will certainly have to redesign some aspects "from the ground up" as GSGregory is saying but it's been done before (Terraria) and Chucklefish apparently has had this on their mind for awhile. Starbound will most likely have controller support in the future, there is no argument about that.

The only argument is the "controller vs keyboard" thing which imo is just stupid; some people prefer one, other people prefer the other, we don't all have to think alike. Besides, as long as the "controller" version of the game doesn't affect the "keyboard" version than who cares?

Personally, I would prefer a controller over the keyboard if they come up with a decent way to do it (comparable to Terarria). Why would I prefer a controller over a keyboard if a keyboard is admittedly more efficient? Ergonomics! My day job is being a musician and computer keyboards can be hell on my tendons which means I have to take breaks from gaming way more often with a keyboard than a controller; how is that "efficient"?

A lot of things were changed to work with the controller. It was not just the PC version tossed on the console. The way the cursor worked, which is a big problem with using a controller, is completely different on Xbox terraria.

Yes, if the game was put on xbox/PS with the controls and menus all redone it would work fine. On PC though with the game made for a mouse it is not going to work well at all.

That is also why PC terraria does not have controller support either.

I don't know how they're going to get the game to work with a controller. There's going to be a lot of missing keybinds.

A lot of keybinds could be easily pushed into a radial menu like the quick chat options in L4D2 and Dota 2.

Controllers are awesome for sidescrollers like Castle Crashers and Super Meat Boy, but for a game like this which involves a lot of precise guided motions and inventory management, keyboard-and-mouse is just vastly superior. If you think you could build, shoot arrows and manage your inventory equally as well as a keyboard-and-mouse player, you're dreaming. Sorry.

That said, if people will enjoy the addition of controller support, why not? If they do introduce it, though, don't complain that the game doesn't play as well with a controller, because it won't.

Just need to think about everything you use the mouse for.
Aiming. Placing and destroying blocks. Directing your character, though that could be done by D-pad or analogue stick.

This game is designed for keyboard and mouse. The entire control system would need a rework for controller compatibility. And while it's relatively possible, not only would it most likely be low on the list of priorities, but it would also not be on par with keyboard & mouse controls.

Playing terraria on my ipad with the virtual joysticks was actually very satisfying once i got used to the way in which blocks were placed and in many aspects i actually preferred that control scheme. A big problem with keyboards and mice is that i have is how binary the actions feel, i.e. When moving with keys you are either moving left or not, as most keyboards i think cannot register how much a key is pressed down and even if they could it'd be bloody difficult, whereas with an analogue stick you are given allot more control over the angle at which it is held, allowing for much more fluid movement control. This adds allot more ease in platforming games as with a keyboard precise jumping can only really be achieved by rapidly tapping left and right.

Anyway back to the original suggestion at hand: in my mind for a standard xbox controller the left analogue stick would control all movement whilst the right analogue stick would control where you face and where blocks would be placed, in much the same way as terraria works, with the virtual joysticks on my iPad at least its hard to describe. Pressing the right joystick will allow you to place blocks on the wall. The right trigger would be used to use the right handed item and vice versa in on the left. Items in the hotbar would be selected by pressing the right and left bumpers and will be assigned to each by pressing right and left on the Dpad for each respective hand, the same for two handed weapons it would just not matter which part of the Dpad you press, pressing down on theDpad will drop the item in question. Crafting and inventory would have to be united into one menu to be bought up with x, as would the quest log and journal by pressing b. Return to ship would be assigned to the y key and to interact with object you would have to stand next to them and press a. Crafing menus would be navigable with both analogue sticks as would the journal/ quest log.

Though I do think the game would play well with a controller, fighting exploring digging etc... Building is all about mouse and keyboard...

That said, right now I do not think a controller would work well, there is too much stuff that still has to be drag and drop, as they add shortcuts and such, sure bring on controller support.

Wait what? yes surely a mouse is superior in FPS games and Strategy games, but starbound is so close in gameplay to old platformers that a controller would fit in better for some, i have no probelm with keyboard and mouse but i think controller support should be added for people who wanna use a controller or are more accustomed to controllers.
