Why Does Everyone Overlook the Hotbar?

I keep my ship stocked with storage and crafting stations, but as it is right now, the ships just aren't big enough for me. Though thankfully that's soon (I hope) to change.

Jeez, just set a level 1 planet as base, guard your stuff in there... and farm. A lot.

Except the fact that that planet is due for an expiration date...

    this gives me an idea..

you know in RL when suns are about to die they grow to a red giant at one point they destroy all planets in their system, collaps, supernova after if the star was big enough a black hole comes up or a smalle,r brighter, hotter, star appears.

why not take this into the game. *blinking*

or the tentacle virus which happend to earth IG spreading randomly through the universe... similar to taint from thaumcraft 4 in minecraft.

this would make it impossible to stay on 1 planet forever, adds spice if you ask me. a threat which you can't control..

    other than monsters or meteorites.

Not in a real attempt to start anything, but most youtube celeb skill levels are less than stellar. This includes management and understanding of the UI.

I used to think the hot-bar was far too small. Then I found magic and suddenly the hot-bar has extra space. :s

    1. Universal Spellbook (usually set to Eternal Glow)
    2. Conjuration Spellbook (usually set to Fly)
    3. Enchanting Spellbook (usually set to either Regeneration [which powers up as the Enchanting book gets stronger] or Energy)
    4. Geomancy Spellbook (usually set to either Earth Bore [for super fast mining] or Blink)
    5. Thaumaturgy Spellbook (usually set to Fire Blast)

    L. Diamond Drill (for precision)
    R. Chainsaw (for precision)
[Yes, L and R are both set to 2-Handed objects, but can be switched with a simple keystroke (default Z).]

    6. Cooked Alien Meat (spawned by magic)
    7. Nylon Guitar
    8. Saxophone
    9. Harp
    10. Violin

7-10 subject to change based on what songs are being played.

Wait, it's possible to build a chainsaw now? Haven't seen the recipe added to the actual game, just modded in. I know there is a Chainsaw item file, just wasn't sure if it was in the base game.

    it isn't ?

    I'll vouch for this.
I don't know, I haven't seen the recipe yet. If it's possible to build without mods, which crafting station and what tech level do you need?

yeah that's the thing i haven't seen the recipe either. it's not in the game yet.

They can be found via mod, or simply cheating (starcheat).

They do function, they cut down trees much faster than the stone axe. However, they obviously need some tweaking. The sound effect is far too loud, and you swing them much like the stone axe.

My hotbar is highly variable, dependent on whatever I'm doing or feel that I need quick access to. I also have it keyed on controller, to scroll through/select and buttons linked to particular slots.

    Controllers . . .

Once again bringing that up in this context offends me somewhat and I'm not quite sure why.

    Stop making me think.

My hotbar is something like this:

    1. <mining tool>
    2. <mining tool with larger radius>
    3. <mining tool with even larger radius>
    4. <secret>
    5. Paint Gun
    L: <nothing>
    R: <sometimes nothing, sometimes one-handed melee weapon>
    6. Piano
    7. <melee weapon>
    8. <ranged weapon>
    9. <another melee weapon>
    10. <secret; not food>

The only set item on my hotbar is torches on 0(Minecraft is responsible for this). Everything else varies.

I lose things like woods and stone on the hotbar when I make a new character BECAUSE I'm strict about what's where on it.

Before I get certain items certain spots stay empty which means stuff goes to it automatically, and because on any character I've played for a couple hours the bar is full it never occurs to me to look up there until after I've checked my inventory.

Which seems to be what the OP is talking about given his 'people lose things on the bar' bit.

You know, I'm one of those few people that always check their hotbar when they get something (in the rare case that I have empty hotbar slots). Curiously, items will not go into your L and R slots even when they're both empty.

Personally, I don't like the way random stuff you pick up automatically ends up in the hotbar's empty slots, especially since it's generally stuff I don't want to use often, like dirt.

6 is always torches, I always have a musical instrument near the end. Pickaxe/drill is 1, 2 is an axe, and 3 and 4 are usually my guns. 5 is a torchlight. The rest changes regularly depending on what I''m doing at the moment.

I think the reason that people miss it in the way that OP describes is because your inventory is independent from the hotbar's inventory. Usually, you would expect to find things that you pick up in your inventory, regardless of whether or not the game would auto-place it in the hotbar.
