Why do you Starbound?

Exploration and discovery for me kinda dwindled out with the giraffe updates. There's very little variety of planets now.
For example: Deserts are always either part Tar biome, or part Oasis biome, and that's it for desert worlds, Desert-tar and Desert-oasis.
I miss desert-jungles. a lot. They were very fun and made sense.

And forest worlds used to have tons of variety of the main forest, besides the random sub-biomes. When you clicked a forest planet, it could have been a flower forest, eye forest, brain forest, etc. It was awesome.

Hopefully the end-game stars that aren't in yet are like the old days.

yeah!! thats the spirit! HIT EM RIGHT IN THE FACE with whatever thing is at reach!! and if not... collapse a building you just built right over em!! (oh if only we could do that lol)[DOUBLEPOST=1430976267][/DOUBLEPOST]
hopefully they bring THAT variety back, really! exploration in giraffe is bland as a half baked Krumkake... really bland... or a Cannoli whichever you have actually tasted. Those eye forests really irked me out tho... couldnt stand being watched 24/7, my favourite was the magma/snowland planets :D

I enjoyed the feeling of exploring a hostile galaxy. Of teching up to conquer it --- Getting better and better at surviving particular hazards.

Though the survival mechanics were not perfect, without them the sense of struggling against the environment is gone.

Planets don't seem as hostile, unique, or dangerous as they used to.
I can no longer proudly boast "Oh hey. I went there. I survived. I thrived. I bent that place to my will." and feel like that boast is any sort of accomplishment.

I do still get a kick out of building up a home, project, or simply decorating my own ship as per the roleplay ideal behind whatever character I may be playing.

I can't explain it. lately.. It just feels like the exploration doesn't have that spark of excitement, awe, and risk that was there before.

That feeling of overcoming everything stacked against you brings. You know, you know?

Ironically we have all this life being breathed into the game too --- the quest hub, the npc's, etc. .. These are wonderful things, and they are appreciated.
But then on the other hand, we got some of the hostile threat mitigated. We get all these fun recipes to discover and play with but hardly any incentive to chase them now that we do.
We visit worlds who, for reasons I can't quite put my finger on, feel they have less personality than before.

Starbound is still a growing evolving thing. I think in time things will get better! (And it's not like things awful by any stretch of the word as it is.)

    How do I what?!

Confused on the term, but get what you mean by it.

I go from moment to moment, mood to mood. I may not build as much as I did in the prior version, but I still build. Although the lack of variety in exploration of just one biome is disconcerning. Once you have seen one biome, you have seen the rest. I know what has changed, and that is that now biomes don't really change. In Koala there use to be mix n match of wonders, weather, gravity, and the like. At least there is a size different, that has been kept. Unsure if gravity is the same for each biome, as i haven't payed attention enough, but feels like it since usually I would notice.

Anyway I just venture from planet to planet regardless of the lack of this or that; I just still look for that critter I once sought out, that koala beastie that was neutral. As well a decent place to build a home and start building the universe. I just haven't gotten really all that far as of yet. (That probably due to so many updates of other games.) Still have in mind my wanting to build a universe.

I can see some variety in the terrain itself, but not the biome. So I look to the generation for anything interesting. Although even that in a way has changed a little, but still decent enough for me, at least that part.:)

You pretty much summed up what was good and is gone, yeah... I find myself feeling like theres no reason to revisit any planet past tier 1 stars after you ve got what you needed. Hunger and temperature added a really nice sense of survival, there are no more radical or nonsensical environments in the least expected piece of planets and moons... its just the constant environment of what you already saw with one or two more chests, random holes deep underground, and very rarely something excitingor interesting to find, it is far easier to overcome a hazard by simply doing *talk to AI, click Tech, click Suit, close AI* and you re set to endure whatever nature brewed up to kill you

Building was and still is a lot of fun, but yeah... I dont think thers a lot of people stubborn enought to use any planets that are past tier 2 stars for their buildings, either the land is just too silly to do anything or there is little to do in those planets. If survival makes a comeback Im sure Starbound would get a darn lot more exciting.[DOUBLEPOST=1431024405][/DOUBLEPOST]
Confused on the term? this is the internet, I could use your name as a term/verb/adjecttive if I had the right context to do so :3 aye the mood is what seems to be random and constant in the game, Biomes are all the same now and you know what to expect based on an A, B or C formula with just a few more variations... no more acid rains on magma planets with ice sub biomes... those were so much fun lol... and the disturbing tentacle planets that had a very ominous end game feel, hope you saw those while they were available

As for why I Starbound? To be quite frank, I don't. At least not anymore. But the reason behind my Starbounding, back in angry Koala I think? I bought it shortly after it became available on steam. Anyway, the reason why I Starbounded back then was because Space. Space and everything it could offer. Starbound is the game that came closest to delivering the vastness and possibilities of space exploration. And it did so with the humor and quirky flair worthy of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Not that those elements are gone, but after more than a hundred hours of playing it, as well as recent changes to the game, I was left a bit burned out. So I stopped in order to employ a wait and see approach. But I certainly got my money's worth out of it, so whatever the outcome I won't be bitter about it.

Well now I didnt know that bit of headbanging.

this is certainly the most cheerful post i ve seen in a while! I admit I took the same approach after Koala era passed away, then I rejoiend recently upon the realization that I had to hone up my building skills for future works and keep a good eye on player creations... also on high hopes exploration will become just as exciting as it was, vast and seemingly endless.

I'm a MMO player, as such I have been keeping track of Starbound lately more than playing it. (I have played a hell of a lot of it though, and like what I'm seeing in nightly!) I enjoy it, it really helped put things into perspective. In a mmo, you make your own character, but the choice and power prove fleeting outside of scripted events.

Here its different, when a certain green haired human touches down onto that first alien planet in a T-shirt , jeans, and whatever she scrounged from the ship locker, she has power.

The power to influence and shape the world around her.
The power to reach the heavens and dig to hell.
The power to make her own place and defend herself.
The power to go beyond the horizon, the power to be greater.

It all starts with humble wood and dirt, but that dirt house made of necessity? Tomorrow a stone courtyard in a desert, the day after a glass arboretum in space, littered with the spoils of a Floran prison.

Starbound has a story, a setting, and missions, no doubt. And I'll want to see what other people will have called their own; but the reason I Starbound is to make it mine. Having Lintton conquer a mighty task or engineering feat is worth as much as any AAA cutscene. And its a feeling I keep coming back to enjoy.

Heh, thats a very noble and artistic way to put it, necessity forced me to "build a hole" into snow once during one of the koala era snowstorms (they used to hurl objects at you and do damage) and warm myself with a makeshift campfire which also cooked my only 2 monster steaks... that was one hell of a first day in starbound, but was also the most thrilling!

I have played MMOs as well, and truly agreed on the fact that your ultimate freedom of choice in those games are what events you ll do... and how you look! here in Starbound its been rather amazing, how you could do almost as much as you wanted, provided you had what was needed beforehand. If only we could see things like Snowland biome with ocean sub biome... (sort of like a huge lake I guess) instead of just frozen or not frozen oceans...

I could very well use my name as such, even outside the internet; which has no baring on terms and the like. words and terms are made outside first in the heads of many people out there.

Of course knowing my name comes from a language I used in gaming... Ironic though that it means adventure, or literally precious in this spelling of it.

And I didn't see the world itself, just a secondary biome of it; since the sector I stopped at was the 4th one. Mainly went into those jungle planets. The x-sector didn't really interest me enough to enter, or even defeat the boss to get in. Well is what a builder is to do. I have plenty of fun in that version, although can go back due to my own archived backups.:)

I may miss a lot of things from koala, even the inspiration for building on planets. That has actually lessened a bit as well, even though there are more things to build with, the environment has taken a step backward per say. So the only thing truly left is the generated terrain, and possible dungeon constructs; although those usually I tear down here and there for parts, unless I get inspired to build around them in focus. Lots changed that is for sure, but I am hopeful.:D

Then lets both hope for the best! specially on biomes... the true sour applet in the keg. Sector X was a lot of fun, It didnt feel THAT different from the other sectors, except it had Tentacle biomes and more randomized possibilities (tentacle biomes were pure, the only sub biome I ever found was the "heck" or flesh biome)... now that I think about it, what bothers me the most in giraffe era... is the lack of sectors, ok they were removed...

Now everything is in the same place, I guess it makes developing easier.... (I remember reaing about why it got removed but hell if I remember) but it took away that sense that you had actually progress further into the vastness of space, moving to a different star doesnt have that kick that "lets move to sector X or Delta or Gamma" had... just thinking about it was exciting, both as a builder and explorer, I always wanted to find different things to discover/fight/build with and the sectors would usually make me consider what I was gonna require to survive... now its just a couple suits and whatever club you need to whack the monsters.

Bought it cause i was looking for a terrariaesque game in space and this was it, but the lack of gameplay and too much emphasis on hoarding building components (wich can all just be spawned with the admin command anyway) has currently made me not play it anymore, maybe in the future.

@Corrigane Sectors were nice for a time. The main reason I didn't even go into the x sector was it was "placeholder" content and going to change anyway. Seen many sub biomes, and secondaries were pretty wild.

For me it wasn't the sectors that gave me sense of progress, as we have a short form one now if you think about it. We still have to defeat a boss to get that sappy suit in order to feasibly go onto the next tier of planets. It is that I saw in progression. Boss and armor, so that much has not really changed a whole lot. It is just now they reduced this or that to a basic level, or appearance thereof.

I am pretty easily entertained, and the reason why I can pretty much play most games that I have at least some interest in. The only factor would be my mood, which varies daily from moment to moment. So for me it was truly the variety the prior had, just in one sector.

It was mentioned that we will have 3 sectors. the base one you see, a pvp one, and a creative one. Well roughly was said a while back, and unsure if they are still going to do so. Who knows beyond the devs. Doesn't really matter to me either way, as those two do not hold much interest. After all if the current one is not interesting enough to fly around in, then why would I go through just to get something that I might not even want.

Regardless I still find a way to build, as I just have a passion for it, or creative mind for it. I really shouldn't write things when I first wake... I tend to ramble too much.><

I'm pretty sure starbound was made by the same people who made terraria or atleast some of them. I love them both, although i think its because terraria has so much in the item department, i mean most of starbound items are copy paste of the same thing just different look and dmg.In terraria there are alot of awesome unique items.

Well Terraria is more combat oriented than starbound, so I don't quite see much of a comparison. Plus the game has been out for a while. They had a lot of time to add a ton of items, and are going to add even more with the next update.

I am sure starbound will get their eventually. Since combat is not truly a focus in starbound, at least not in the sense Terraria is; that is the reason for quite a few of the procedural things. That and it is a Huge procedural universe.

Well that is my shortened thought on that bit. Just figured I would say something on them. I do love both games equally.:)

I was afraid that would be the case, it never turns out right no matter how much effort they put into it. I see gleams of something that could turn out good, but still...

also your avatar is adorable :3[DOUBLEPOST=1431205409][/DOUBLEPOST]
Id get terraria, but I just couldnt after having the one thats in space... I mean cmon! also... Starbound has been procedurally generated on... names, and weapon names... I can hardly find any variety in latter levels, then again we all know it ll be changed... for the better I hope. Even Bloodborne did a really good job with their procedural chalice dungeons and its not even a focus of the game.
