Why do some quests have a required ship level?

?

Should quests require a specific ship level?

  1. Yes - I prefer structured, linear gameplay.

  2. No - I want as much customization as possible.

The way I see it this robs players of what would otherwise be a nice level of customization.

Attaching techs to ship upgrades makes sense, as far as I know none of them are needed to play through the game. But locking progression behind what is, in my opinion, a customization option really limits the game. Especially for roleplayers.

I don't want a massive sprawling dreadnought. I quite like my smaller ship. But I also want to play through as many quests as possible.

The way I look at it, gathering the materials required for the ship upgrade is the quest, even if it doesn't show up under the bright yellow exclamation point on the right.

I'm not contesting the level of effort it takes to get a ship upgrade, my problem is that the ship upgrades are mandatory to start other, unrelated quests.

There are quests in the endgame that require a level 8 ship to start, which restricts the player's gameplay style be forcing them to fully upgrade in order to access content.

to get nano suits far as I know is not tied to ship upgrades... Far as I know... and the nano suits are pretty much the progression currently. I think it is the other way around. Since someone actually has gone through the primary progression without upgrading the sip, and has been asking where the ship upgrades are...><

They noted they are on the final current tier, but have not expanded ship. Fixing the ship is one thing, but expanding does not apparently key into the progression as a gate. Only the nano suits do, which you don't need to expand ship in order to get them. Far as I know. only on 2nd expansion, but practically last boss currently in.

    unless I am misunderstanding something...o_O

    Ah, thanks for the update.

I've been messing around in the asset folder and found a few quests in a folder marked "endgame" that require a level 8 ship. The files themselves look like placeholders but I wasn't sure whether it was an indicator of what would eventually be in there.

There's also the following section of the tech tree released a few months ago, which just bothers me.

So basically this was an (admittedly poorly worded), attempt to get some clarification.

What they are saying is that there are a multitude of quests that are locked behind the ship upgrade, ie. all of the other miscellanious outpost quests that are not tied directly to progression. I have the opposite problem, in that I don't like that the ship is locked behind the misc. quests

This too, I'm hoping once the quest system is more polished the restriction will only apply to quests that are directly linked to ship upgrades, rather than throwing in unrelated ones to fill time.

Wiring locked behind first ship upgrade.
Portable pixel printer, sky rail, creature capture, pixel compressor, employer station locked behind second ship upgrade.
You don't know they are locked in this way. Game does not even tell you that quests are locked because your ship is too small to "help".
I don't even use my ship except as a way to get from planet to planet. My base is on the first planet i spawned at. Why it needs to be a secondary progression other than simply its own size upgrade path is beyond me.

It's not the size that counts, it's how you use it? :iswydt:

i play with four different characters that share resources and i plan for them all to have a different size ship. thats a way to progress without having to upgrade the ship of some of your characters.

Hopefully, ship tech level and size can be separated in the future. I too would prefer something smaller than the fully upgraded size. Perhaps it would be fun to have a shipyard where we can pay to add/remove sections of the ship, alter layout and overall appearance? I know it has been suggested before but really, we spend so much time on our ships it makes sense to me to have them very customizable. For now it can be done through mods so I guess the devs can spend their time on other things but somewhere down the line... hopefully...

wonder if it is different for each race, as that research station on my ship only unlocked after the 2nd expansion...><

for me I actually don't mind this.... At least progression isn't, but as for ship upgrades it kind of makes sense. The bigger your ship the more people will want to quest. Like being famous in a way. Although that would be an interesting system to put in unto itself.

Right now really I just think the main problem is the progression itself is not complete and their aught to be a whole lot more quests; especially ones to give variety to the mix. If not having some that are not on the outpost. I can understand that is where they are starting, as it is the foundation per say for quests. This is something I am sure will expand in the future..:)

I say no strictly from; I Do Not Like being forced to upgrade my ship. I take forever when I decorate my ship getting it just right forgetting other tiers exist then I'm forced to upgrade for another tier of stuff so I have to rip everything out and redecorate. Now I just stuff chests in and wait to max out the cap so I can actually keep what I decorate and I don't want ships that huge. I don't use it all and it just leads to space to stuff chests.

I like a small ship, I don't mind maybe the first or second tier ship, but the absolute halt of progress in order to keep the Ship I want is well.. I dunno, complaining about more space may seem weird but I appreciate little 'boats' that run by myself as I just enjoy exploring to go back to a secluded planet with my fort full of chests and themed rooms.

I agree with you! The giant space-stations are too much. Sure, they make excellent Floran Villages, but sometimes I like the idea of just having a small freighter than a warship!
