Why do I get lower fps in Starbound than ultra Witcher 3

FPS in the outpost is laughable, and in some bigger places the game chugs along. Last night I was playing with friends and they quit because their fps was trash too, what is going on?

they haven't optimized the game as of late, that's the last big update before 1.0 comes out.

Yeah, I've been messing with making missions with lots of monsters and flame traps and stuff...it can drastically reduce your frame rate. Hope they fix it once 1.0 comes out.

Been having some FPS issues myself; it's making my attempts to kill Dreadwing rather painful. Hoping they do some optimization a little bit before 1.0, but I can be patient.

    Unfinished game.

Not fully optimized because they don't have everything they need to fully optimize it yet.

    Because it's unfinished.

    That's a beard you'll have.

    In the future.

Thankfully yesterday's patch seems to have alleviated the issue enough.

My bad I didn't think optimization was really an issue in a side scrolling sprite game.

It's because of how complex the AI coding is within the mobs and NPCs. After all, they have to be smart enough to know how to walk around, go up stairs with jumping, etc. The AI in this game is far more complex than even the most complex monsters in Terraria. And then there's the world generation, loot generation, lighting, shading, physics, Player UI, player coding, etc. The graphics may be simpler than something like Witcher 3, but the coding is anything but. :v

So, when you put a metric ton of NPCs / Mobs on screen at once, the FPS tanks from the game trying to get everyone to move around like they should. Heck, before last update (G.G. Update 2), there were instances of monsters spawning and then doing absolutely nothing until hit by the player. (Not all mobs, mind you, but a whole lot of them.) For a good example of this, check out HappyDays' 6th Starbound video at around 2: 33 in the video. (Video at the end of this post) You'll see a lot of the sewer monsters here frozen in place, not doing anything at all. After G.G. Update 2, I do not know if this still persists, as I haven't played since the update due to reasons. :v

If you disable the lighting system by entering fullbright mode, your frame rate will increase drastically. Why? Because, for a side scrolling sprite game, Starbound has a powerful lighting system unlike many other similar games. It also has a lot better physics that other games as well, and many other features relating to the rendering system that set Starbound apart. It incurs a frame rate hut, yss, but I think the end result is worth it... and the upcoming updates will work on polishing the game which includes frame rate improvements.

Ooooo what is this fullbright mode, and how do I enable it? (Just got the game like a week ago. xD)

Okay I get you. Good to know it is not a problem on my end, and luckily FPS is the only issue I have really run into lately
Ill have to check it out thanks

Frame rates in the outpost and any dungeon with protected blocks seem to suffer the most. Hopefully optimization can fix this.
I'm hoping Starbound gets complicated wired machinery eventually too (like Metadept's Starfoundry mod) and there were a lot of fps hits using that. It needs to be improved.
