Why do Glitch eat?

I don't get why Glitch eat food. Do they use it as some sort of fuel, or are they able to taste food in some way? I really don't get it.

 

it's part of their programming. to be as human as possible, all things considered.

 

I hadn't considered that. It would make sense with standard Glitch in villages and castles, but wouldn't sentient Glitch, like player characters, abandon that programming along with the rest of the medieval lifestyle?

 

at that point it could be more of a psychological thing. trying to hold on to something that feels normal, feels secure, something that doesn't harm them like a hive-mind-stuck-in-medieval-times might.

 

Energy can't be created out of nothing. Pretty sure it was stated somewhere that the Glitch have a way to convert food into pure energy.

 

that's implying they run on that kind of energy. they could use ultraviolet light for energy, be it directly from the sun or sunlight reflected off neighboring moons/planets.

 

the free thinking glitch havnt completely gotten past their programming to be as human as possible, they just know more than hivemind glitch
their programming will still shut them down if they dont eat, they are simply aware that its their programming doing that and not an actual "hardware" thing

 

The Glitch description for Currentcorn Seed says "Proud. The Glitch know of a way to use these vegetables as batteries."
To me, this implies that the Glitch are able to convert food into electrical energy somehow.

 

The glitch probably aren't solar powered since they were made to emulate medieval society. Would not be surprised if they had something that inefficiently converted food into energy.

 

They likely have some sort of sinthetic digestive system, which would also explain why would they need sewers.

 

There are several Glitch specific food items in Starbound that hint at being used as a way to recharge their batteries, and some of these items may also help with lubricating their internal systems or they might seize up, this would explain the need for sewers and toilets (to dispose of used fluids).
