Aren't they already, though? You can run around the entirety of the planet's circumference and get back to where you started, after all.

    You think too unrealistically.

I guess he, like I at first, hoped you could dig through the center of the planet, reinforce the chambers in the center, and come back from the other side of the planet. Or at least make have the capability to make a corridor around the core to travel quicker to the other side. Right now the top of the core and the ground have the same length. It'd be extremely difficult to pull it off though with the current system. Unless they just make it that you move faster from left to right as you get closer to the core, to simulate that the area is smaller.

how hard could it be to redesign planets so you could dig through them ?

Answer... Much more difficult. And not necessary.

It could be done, but it'd take way too much time. It'd mess so hard with the current engine of the game that it's even hard to calculate how much time it'd take, but more than a whole year for sure. Considering how so much time would be needed to add this arguably fun feature, I can tell you it's not happening for Starbound. Maybe for a Starbound 2, who knows?

May not be that much. Could just be a system that would teleport you to the other side of the planet if you dig through the core, but to the bottom of it with a small empty box, like 4x4 or something. Could make an easy system like that, but it would be far from perfect.

That's not how planets work. It's not possible for someone to survive the planet's core. Even if they did, the gravitational pull would be directed towards the center, making it impossible to keep digging to the other side.

That feels like a cheat, to me, no fun at all. If you have to "use your imagination" to see it as crossing through the center of the planet, I prefer the way it is now, where you can just pretend it is too dangerous to go.

Digging upwards in a stair-like pattern isn't all that difficult. Surely there would be a way somehow.

You wouldn't be in any state to be digging, since the gravitational pull of a large body of mass becomes stronger closer to its center. And this is still assuming one can survive the core itself, which may well contain a liquefied element (much like our own outer core) and a lack of habitable conditions.

This is Starbound we're talking about. We have tech to resist all kinds of substances from poison to lack of oxygen to lava. If the developers actually wanted to make going through the core a thing, they'd find a way. If they expanded on it, they could make stuff so much more immersive, from being able to mine out a planet's core and making it unstable to the point of collapse, to making your own planets by gathering enough blocks and inserting them to a ship's system for it to generate a barren planet which you could start populating with different kinds of plants, creatures, even make colonies. A lot more sandbox features.

That is a very presumptuous statement. I'm sure they do want, they just don't have time to make it.
