Why Bases may become needed/important

I've seen the constant argument '' why should bases be needed if we have everything on our ship'' and I have a few suggestions.
First of all, I think it should be a choice; it will have benefits, but if you prefer to be a nomad it wouldn't ruin your gameplay. Bases would just enhance starbound because they could be used to:
    1. Build colonies
    2. Have massive farms
    3. Industrial factory(?) would be a cool way to get rid of spare material and generate a little bit of profit
    4. Have other towns attack you
    5. If npcs are attracted more quests could be given
    6. Have machines that could extract minerals from the ground (fuel?)/have solar panels to slowly charge your ship.
Anyway...those are just my random ideas, i know this is beta and I doubt these suggestions would be implimented early even if they are looked upon. Anyway thanks for reading.

I recall something from ages ago that Tiy was planning to have the player build and populate a city, and have it act as a quest hub/long term storage etc. The only disincentive right now is the travelling cost, and I think that one has been solved already, although hasn't been patched into the game yet.

Nice ideas btw. I like the idea of having incentives to build a base, but only fluffy stuff or a little extra income. I don't think there should be progression roadblocks tied in with building (like say being unable to make a certain tier of armour) due to the nomadic players, or players roleplaying nomadic characters.

Would be cool if they did something similar to the Terraria idea where NPCs would move in to house you build.

I really really love your solar pannel idea!

Can we have a vise verse for this too? Like... I am running low on Iron, I would like to pay the factory pixels to collect iron for me.

I'd like to see npcs move in and then contimue to imprive the place they're in. If you build a basic house the nocs would buold it bigger over time. I'd also like to see the npc use materials we provide to them in a chest in the dwelling. That's much more complicated but dream big.

Glitch have their own versions ...
    1. Build servers.
    2. Replicate Glitch.
    3. Do massive exterminations (organic's race are not needed)
    4. Quest : expand the servers
    5. Move to the next planet - Etablish an server annex ...
    6. Repeat & Repeat again until error 404 is back.

I don't know about NPCs building houses. I'd rather do that myself. If they had NPCs do it, they'd have to use specific patterns and you'd see the some NPC build the same house another one is building.

What I'd like to see, is NPCs handling tasks, like the way mechanical stuff does in Minecraft's feed the beast. Just one example off the top of my head- Make a home for a "farmer" NPC near open ground. That NPC farms the land and puts the results in a specified chest. Things of that nature.

Would be cool if mining companies could send you on missions to mine asteroids. Would put them to use.

That would be a nifty side quest. However I am a packrat/hoarder that wants to collect a lot of ores for myself.

I think it would be cool if colonies developed more organically over time, rather than you building everything. Say you go down onto a planet, place down a house with a couple beds and a few human spawners. You go out adventuring for a while, and when you return you find that the people on your colony have built another house and a farm and that another colonist has joined you. This goes on and on and on, growing exponentially until you have a thriving town on a planet.

Some good stuff here. I do recall reading stuff about quest hubs elsewhere, so I imagine that down the pipeline this'll end up being the case and an advantage versus just using ships as a base (or so I hope).

Only problem with this is how planets work at present. If they aren't being used (re: there are no players on them), they are unloaded and thus nothing happens during that time until someone ventures there again and the world is re-loaded. Perhaps in the future we might see that worlds set as home worlds aren't completely unloaded whilst there are no players there, allowing some of this automation stuff (crops growing et al) to still occur. Not sure at this stage what kind of performance hit that might entail for servers though.

    2. Have massive farms

Is there any reason to have massive farms? I have 3 banana plants growing on my ship. Between that and the meat I pick up from fighting I am drowning in food already...

i think it's good to have both options open. i had great fun going from planet to planet with one character and having a sort of home farm with a merchant and a guard to come back to with another character. i think it would be cool to have the biggest ship available and never settle anywhere, you could go from server to server and check out stuff randomly in singleplayer. then again it's cool to have bases on each sector to store materials for bigger building projects.

would a bigger ship use more fuel? it would make sense, to have this sort of balance, that bigger newer stuff wouldn't necessarily obsolete the stuff you already had.

I personally wanted to build a base because I just go so much cool loot and blocks that are not craftable that I wanted to use so the easiest solution is to build a base out of them and hope that some day soon some sort of base dynamic system will be incorporated like patroling guards etc.

This would be good if they make it so that you do not need to be near the farm for it to grow. As of now, if you leave the planet, the farm goes in suspended mode. This make me sad.

Right now you have to build a house in every sector already. Both for boss fights, a mining camp, and so you don't get insta-killed on beam-down.

This was noted as a bug. Tiy mentioned that it is supposed to keep track of growth cycles even when away from the planet. Hopefully this sort of thing will also be put into place for any other systems in place that take time on your home planet.
