Well, there sure seems to be a lot of those tentacle planets. They'd need a lot of Death Stars to wipe it out.

Although, maybe the hostile entity is separate from the tentacles, and simply spreads them. Perhaps there's only one source, and it doesn't spread on it's own, so just killing off earth would stop it?

If you need to ask, you clearly don't understand the importance of the super in a super weapon. "Why is a military organization creating a very effective weapon" should be self-evident.

 

They plan on using the death star to destroy Earth's moon, which is obviously made of cheese and is the tentacle monster's only food source. All they'll need to do from there is wait for it to starve to death.
