Why are bullets so slow?

I might be able to accept a plasma rifle or rocket launcher having a slow projectile, but bullets should not float lazily through the air IMO. Is it a technical limitation? Or what? Its hard to actually SNIPE with a sniper rifle due to the very slow projectile.

Because if you make them fast, how is the player meant to dodge when faced with a horde of enemies bearing sniper rifles? Especially when they hurt so damn bad. I'm all for slower projectiles in games. Makes hitting things as well as avoiding damage more of a skillful thing.

Who says players cant have a slightly increased projectile speed over NPCs?

My bullets travel at the speed of a tricycle. I agree that they should be faster.

Technically it doesn't make sense that we can dodge bullets so easily. >.>

On the other hand, if you couldn't, you'd probably get a lot of people complaining about how some hostile NPC one-shotted them with a sniper rifle they never had a chance to dodge.

Because balance between melee and projectile weapons. You don't want to make the swords and stones obsolete.

Don't worry, in time you won't even have to...

In all seriousness everything is subject to change. They haven't even added all the ranged weapons let alone balanced them.

    Yes, yes. :p
Perhaps there should be a site system, like Mark of the Ninja. Enemies can only see in front of themselves, perhaps hear noises, and actually take time to aim... Rather than miraculously sensing you behind them and miraculously insta-noscope-headshotting you.

But of course, that would definitely alter the game and make it more stealth-like. Perhaps someone could code a mod like that. :D

My guess - Due to balance and letting people dodge projectiles of all kinds.

Because the eyeball/brain trees and pink dirt everywhere make so much sense? Gameplay is way more important than how realistic a game is. If bullets traveled at realistic speed there wouldn't be any room for skill.

A sight system like someone else suggested could work, but the more important issue is enemy reflexes. I don't care that it realizes I'm sneaking up on it and turns around, but there's barely even a fraction of a second between when it notices you, turns around, and fires a possibly lethal shot. That's when stuff gets a little BS.

Perhaps you just have to be a bit more skillful my friend.

I wouldn't mind if bullet speed was increased if there was a stealth system added.

This idea that you should be able to dodge bullets, who came up with it? lol please it's hilarious. You should be able to dodge bullets from sniper rifles, assault rfiles and handguns now? Why? Why in the world? Why there must always be someone who comes up with an illogical belief based on a misled and twisted idea of "skill"? Look at how guns are done in Terraria. They are pretty good. Certainly 100% better than they are in Starbound currently. Sounds, bullet speeds and graphic effects.

I've got a gun that shoots bullets that lazily float in the air for a few seconds before speeding off. it's more of a "run backwards and hope the monster runs into my bullets" gun. Because it doesn't do enough damage to justify the bullets.
