I love the gardening also. I am hoping to find more seeds and make a giant plantation when I find a suitable world to call my home. :)

I like farming. I'm collecting saplings and seeds, but my crops won't seem to grow. :<

If you're in single player, then try this mod out for a change: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?resources/persistent-farmables.640/

Notice how I mentioned all farmers should be thankful for JTE and their mod? That's the mod. I use the real-time setting, so my crops are always growing, even if the glowing eyes of my Glitch, Robo Knight, are not staring at them. It even works when you start the game back up by using the timestamps on your system to determine how much the crops should grow. It only applies to farmable crops, not trees.

Yes, farming is glorious! I've cleared a large space on my home planet for a castle that will mostly be a farm.

Cool stuff! I play on multiplayer unfortunately. I might transition my stuff over to singleplayer though. Also, I've been standing near my crops for a looong time now and they still don't grow! I'm cursed.

What are you planting? Some crops take a far longer time than others. For example, Oculemons take a ridiculous amount of time while Feathercrown takes very little.

I have Diodia and Toxictop. I was thinking that maybe Toxictop won't grow on the soil I have it on, but I'm completely lost as to why the Diodia won't grow.

I think there were threads about Toxic Top not growing at all. Diodia does take a little, but I have farmed it successfully, it shouldn't take that long. Do you have the Persistent Farmables mod installed? The readme.txt in it said something about it making crops not grow at all in multiplayer servers.

I personally have no mods installed, however I think some plants require certain environmental conditions to grow, for example the melon you find below ground has to be grown below ground as far as I'm aware.

  10. meteors only hit CERTAIN planets, if you see any sort of crater in the background...build underground.

I attempt to find seeds wherever I go, but trees are where it's at.
I used an entire Alpha Sector planet just to farm trees. Wood is too good.

As a general rule, I plant all my farmables, except for "Strange Saplings" underground. It makes harvesting easier since you don't have to worry about monsters or environmental hazards while you're harvesting. Tooxic top and diodia both take a bit of time to grow and the waiting can get tedius. I find all plants tend to grow faster while you are off world exploring some other planet While you wait for them to grow. Standing next to them and waiting is pointless except when you first start out and are trying to establish a decent food supply and reserve. Here are some general things I've learned so far:

1: Only trees should be planted above ground due to their height.

2: So far, no crop that I've found is more than five spaces high, but that could change, so when excavating a row for planting make it six spaces between the floor and the ceiling. Since pickaxes and drills mine 3 X 3 chunks, this is very easy to do.

3: A planting row 100 blocks in length is enough space to grow substantial amounts of crops in short periods of time, the faster growing seeds
allowing you to take full advantage of crops like wheat for the plant fiber as well as the food product.

4: If you have the option, go for trees that have a narrow profile and multiple places where their leaves grow from. Trees don't like touching buildings or terrain features on either side of them. And can even interfere with the growth of other trees close by if not planted at the same time before harvesting the older ones.

5: Trees with sprawling branches require a wide berth. Keep a vacant spot 12 spaces wide between your walls and the nearest seedling you plant, otherwise the sapling of wider tress may simply disappear when it breaks free while off screen because there wasn't enough room for it to grow.

6: the number of seeds you get when cutting down trees is determined by the number of places foliage is growing from. ex: Tall palm tree types that only have leaves growing out of the top generally only give one seed when cut down. but "Cotton Candy trees" with their bulbous leaves growing all up and down the trunk tend to give 8-13 seed when cut down depending on height and number of foliage clusters.

7: Saplings do not transform into trees while you watch, the seedling grows and breaks the glass but that's it. They will transform into trees off screen, How far you have to go off screen and for how long seems to vary. Not sure if it is a function of what planet you're on, or of the tree type you planted, however this process goes by MUCH FASTER if you are off world exploring.

8: Wheat seeds, given to every species is of no use as a food crop until you've gotten the cooking table, you cannot eat raw wheat. So start with the OTHER seed you get when starting out. Once you have some food to last you a while, then you can plant wheat for its plant fibers to make bandages until you can get enough copper to make a cooking table..

9: So far in Alpha sector EVERY PLANET I've visited has AT LEAST two types of crops for you. One growing in the wild, though it maybe hard to spot, and be fairly spread out on the surface; and a second seed type found in some chest on the surface. This seems to be true even if a village has planted some of their own crops as well.

10: Always plant as many seeds as you have space for before you save and quit. All Trees and crops will be ready for harvest when you next play. (Note the game keeps track of passing time even when you are not playing it, so rapid quitting and restarting will not allow you to grow those chili peppers a dozen times in one hour. However ti will not let your crops wither no matter how much time passes between plays.

11: Giant Flowers are awesome. The give plant fiber when cut down instead of wood. Typically have green trunks that look like a tangle of vines and are typically topped by huge purple flowers at the peak and cluster of smaller ones down the length. The are best found on Toxic biome planets. They are potentially the tallest trees by far and seemingly the fastest growing trees as well. They also give LOTS of seeds when cut down you you only need one to start you ridiculously hi powered bandage farm.

12: Many trees seem to continue to grow after their transformation if you don't cut them down right away. The giant flower being a prime example in that it seems to get taller between game sessions. While ever seed has a randomly determined maximum height, taller heights aren't reached right away. I wait 3 sessions after a tree has grown before cutting it down. It isn't necessary, but it seems to give better results.

I think I might, just maybe, just a possibility, have every seed in the game. Now I just need the space to farm them...

has anyone ever tried to grow a tree in a spaceship?
i mean, i don't do it because im afraid of crashes D: but does it work?

Yes, it works. At least in my modded ship where there is enough space above the trees to grow. If there isn't enough space above the saplings simply despawn.

I quite love farming too. And exploring also. Building...not so much. I gonna be one of the biggest farm related merchants in this game (if not the biggest :D )
