    And guess who Newton copied!?

"The phrase is most famous as an expression of Newton's but he was using a simile which in its earliest known form was attributed to Bernard of Chartres by John of Salisbury: Bernard of Chartres used to say that we [the Moderns] are like dwarves perched on the shoulders of giants [the Ancients], and thus we are able to see more and farther than the latter. And this is not at all because of the acuteness of our sight or the stature of our body, but because we are carried aloft and elevated by the magnitude of the giants."

Bahah! How great for this thread topic...

Ah, but even John of Salisbury attributed it to Bernard of Chartres, and Bernard himself might not have been the first to think of the idea.

It could have very well been inspired by the Greek myth of the blind giant Orion (yes, Orion the constellation, Orion the Hunter, that Orion), who carried Cedalion, the servant of the smith-God Hephaestus, upon his shoulder so that the servant could serve as his eyes, describing the world to Orion as he moved. Thus he travelled East until he met the sun-God Helios, who healed his sight.

Those awful people copying.... UGH. Why can't we just have quotes that are ORIGINAL!?

No one should say ANYTHING UNORIGINAL!!!

Eh, it's not really a recent thing. It's just gotten more visible with the internet. I remember back when I was a kid (so it was dinosaur times basically) we had the whole SNES vs Megadrive thing going on, or arguing over whether Mario or Sonic was better. I'm as guilty of getting into that whole thing as anyone else honestly!

I think as folks get older or more mature they get a thicker skin and stop really caring what is or isn't the best. There's an uncomfortable age somewhere in the middle between childhood and adulthood where folks arguing it are trying to be clever about it but aren't really all the way there - like they think what they play reflects on them personally so they have to prove their choices are the best. In my view, it seems to go:
Kids: "Sonic's better!" "Nuh-uh, Mario is better!"
Adolescents: "Nintendo is best, they're gonna put Sony out of business!" "Nintendo is kiddie crap for babies!"
Adults: "Haha arguments who cares I'm gonna play whatever I feel like." "Cool. Can I join?"

Blatantly copying someone else's product is completely different from taking influence.

Obviously this game isn't blatantly copying.

Pretty much what I've been saying each time this debate comes up, only I ususally do it in a wall of text.

Well, in my opinion, all what could be said about this topic has been said and should be locked.
Starbound doesnt copy Signs Of Life (Which is obvious considering there was no info about last one when Starbound appeared)
Signs of Life doesnt copy Starbound (Inspiration, perhaps.)

it seems some people highly-perched in the video game business never went past kiddy-hood seeing some of the stupid decisions that gets thrown around in the business nowadays...

Agreed, just going to add I think it is much easier to get in these "copy" battles when you are talking game concepts too. I used to think terraria might have been another minecraft clone (yeah I was that stupid) till I actually played it and found it was a lot more exploration based then MC and actually a ton of fun. After playing it I found that it was inspired (or at least had the same idea) as minecraft with the endlessly editable world but added much more to it and was it's own game. If you compare stuff via a checklist it is easy to say "well this seems to just be the game game but with different X" while playing it lets you see the ways the might have used the "source" material as inspiration and that it doesn't play like you would think it would.

First of all, we began development before Starbound was announced, so its just completely false that we "blatantly copied Starbound."
But they are copying Starbound, as they haven't released yet ;) , also was posted on 16th Dec 2012 on Greenlight.

    omg starbond copyes minecraft

Or maybe they just share similarities, like blocky pixelated graphics, an open world and gameplay focused on adventure and building.
The latter one was just expectation.

"I think you fail to understand that all creative works are ultimately a combination of existing concepts and cultural meme. Starbound didn't invent the sandbox game, they didn't invent a sci-fi setting, they didn't invent blocks and they don't have any kind of special claim to any of thosethings."

i think they explained very well...
can we please stop having this "X copied Y" threads now?

This game looks a lot more polished than Starbound in my opinion.

Though I am equally excited about both now.

Ok since the tongue in cheek comment gave you a center parting hairdo, Signs of Life is copying Sukhoi's PAK FA, as that isn't released until 2016

Because something looks similar doesn't mean they're the same or one copied the other.

Similar to this, I hate the whole idea that Minecraft owns the voxel art style and therefore any game that employs the style is immediately compared to Minecraft and is shot down. It's stupid to assume that there can only be new ideas in the future. The only way the game industry is going to grow is if things improve. World of Warcraft (pick whatever MMO you want) cannot remain the pinnacle of MMO's, [Generic Shooter] cannot remain the pinnacle of FPS/TPS/.etc, and so on.

They're two individual games which should be looked at separately. That's what I think. The War z/Infestation on the other hand...
