Who copied who?

It appears to me that the similarities stop after "side scrolling" and "sci-fi"

At first glance that Signs of Life game looks like it could be fun.

  2. Sarzael

    Sarzael Oxygen Tank

From what i be found, the first new of this game is from December 2012, while Starbound is from February 2012.
This doesnt mean there is any copy going on, but in case there was, Starbound has been in public development first.

Unless it's copying everything right down to the codes it's not copying.

It's definitely no Fortresscraft, but a couple of things are pretty similar. The LBP-esque build tool and equipment GUI match in both this and Starbound. And, well, the respawn animation is basically identical.
Not saying it's a ripoff (in fact it looks pretty well-made), but one obviously took a lot of inspiration from the other.

I liked SOL's statement. Really it reminds me of how I once saw a comment on a Starbound video along the lines of "So, a space based terraria clone basically?" which got me thinking what makes something a "clone" or "copy" of something compared to being inspired by it..

Not all people are like that. Bundling every person into a comment about a niche of people is a silly generalization...

    I agree with this.
In any case, there is no direct knock offs from what I seen, and many things have been seen in games years ago, so its more like taking existing concepts and using them. Call this, "competition" and let it slide.

I hate more than 25% of my fellow humans. Is that better?

On topic: Yeah, I'm getting really sick of all this copy crap. Like those who say "It has blocks and crafting, It's a copy of minecraft." I know a few idiots who think Counter Strike is a rip off of Call of Duty. ( Yeah, I know some dumb people..)

Wanted to expand on my post. I kinda feel that what makes a game feel more like a "clone" then another game is if it seems to just mimic the inspiration while maybe adding a few things that seem to not warrant a spin off. My thing when I thought about it were Minecraft vs Minetest and Mythrunia. Mythrunia was designed to be an RPG-Adventure platform that just happened to look like Minecraft. Minetest on the other hand was designed to be Minecraft but in C++ which would make me consider it more of a clone then it's own game. Just my 2 cents.

Edit: By the way I am not crying copy on any games I mentioned. I like Minetest.

The terms "copying" and "cloning" get thrown around way too much these days when it comes to video games. Its rather annoying. Believe it or not, coming up with completely original concepts becomes harder as time goes on. Every once in a while as technology grows a bit of elbow room opens up for something completely new and someone is bound to utilize that, but sure enough others will later on. It happens. It can't be helped, and it's not a bad thing. What matters is how the games feel to you as a player. Do they give you a sense of fun, excitement, wonder, adventure, or competitiveness? That's what matters.

Now, if you play a game called Monic and it's 100% exactly like Sonic to the point where all the characters and textures are recolored versions of Sonic ones... Be my guest and call foul. That's a clone. That's a copy. But if the game has its own concepts, story, characters, and overall style.. it can have features and traits others have. As long as the developers aren't' claiming they came up with it.

I agree with whoever you just quoted.

I believe there was a topic earlier about whether or not StarBound and Terraria were copying ideas off of each other, but if you look at it, all that's really happening is two different people are building a 2-D sidescrolling sandbox dig-and-build game. That's all that's happening here, too.
Signs of Life isn't copying StarBound and StarBound isn't copying Signs of Life. They just happen to be identical games because they just so happened to have tried to accomplish the same thing.

There is a void out there within the universe of Video Game genres that cries for a 2D sidescrolling, platforming, sci-fi sandbox adventure. StarBound will NOT be the only one. Heck, if you ignore the sci-fi part, Terraria came before it so it's not even the first sidescrolling, platforming, sandbox adventure.

Funny thing was I found this topic right after I downloaded VOX which looks a lot like Cubeworld (vox released before cubeworld BTW). However they are different games of course. Just thought that was interesting.
