Who copied who?

I think this game looks pretty cool but didn't copy starbound, just took ideas from the same things that starbound took ideas from and developed them in different ways.

No offense to any devs out there, but I love the fact that the dudes who are making the game got university/college degrees and are taking their time to finish it.

I would be far more interested in Signs of Life if the animation didn't constantly remind me of QWOP.

Fact is, both games are 2D mining and building sandbox games, they both have a right to exist, the market will decide which gets the customer's money. Both can basically trace their origins to Terraria, which itself can trace its origins to Minecraft. Minecraft, in turn, owes its existence to things like infiniminer and Dwarf Fortress. Dwarf Fortress, in extension, owes its existence to Roguelikes, and ultimately the progenitor of Roguelikes; Rogue. Rogue owes its existence to the imaginations of the medieval fantasy genre, often typified by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

There is a family tree of existence. Nothing ever stands entirely on its own. While Signs of Life's animation is shoddy and its gameplay honestly seems slapdash to me (though I will say that I agree with a previous poster in the thread that the old fashioned Ultima-style container-in-container inventory system kinda gave me a nostalgia trip) in the end the consumer will decide whether or not Signs of Life will see any profit. Why not let them coexist? Starbound is well-organized and thoroughly developed, with an aesthetic that is carefully cultivated. Few games thrown together simply to cash in on Starbound's popularity will compete with that, unless they are similarly well-organized.

There are dozens of MOBA games out there - only the top three, DoTA, LoL, and HoN as a distant third, really see any attention. Why? Because they're the only three with any real attention paid to their design. Signs of Life will have to stand on its own merits in the end, just like any other game. If it turns out to be crap, I'm sure there will be plenty of warning for others.

It doesn't look like a copy, it looks similar. But one can say that to any 2d platformer.
Starbound does have an advantage as it looks like it'll be a lot easier to mod for artistic noobs like myself.

I heard about SoL and Starbound in approximately same time, and judging by all they both begun developments without having heard of each other anything... also, I myself before hearing of Starbound was thinking on how would it be cool to have purely sci-fi Terraria-esque game... :p

It reminded me of Earnest Evans. But that's just me.

That is what I was thinking, there is even mechs! All kind of similar, but I like the style and what I have seen planned for starbound more than Edge of Space and Signs of Life.

I think starbound would do well to copy some of the mech weapons features from EoS... :ssssssssss:

It looks good, but I'm liking the style that Starbound is doing... SoL looks a little too realistic for my taste.

I see nothing wrong with having more sandbox-style sci-fi games! Instead of worrying about who came first or who copied who, just be glad that competition exists. After all, competition leads to better products overall.

And don't feel like you have to choose one or the other anyway. I for one can say that I'll likely end up purchasing Signs of Life AND Endless Space eventually in addition to already having pre-ordered Starbound. Because sci-fi games are cool.

its a curious tendency for some people to always search for a scapegoat in the domain of "video game clones" (sarcastic).

Personally im still in favor of starbound, im finding SoL artstyle offputting and somewhat uninspiring

Is this out yet? I need my sci-fi fix.

Looks more like Edge of Space than Starbound.

  15. There can't be copy here, it's the genre itself, Starbound didn't invent the style as said already.

But still it is one game inspired by others, in it's own style.
I love comparing to Starbound the backgrounds and the animation included making the work more alive. :alien:

Interesting, isn't it, how things tend to come in waves? A team of devs get the idea to make a certain style of game. Little did they know that there were 5 other teams out there who had the same idea. The interesting part is how these unrelated people, who don't know each other, get this same idea at roughly the same time.

We humans think we know everything. How did the entire universe begin? We can tell you that. How is it going to end? We can tell you that, too. Comets are made of ice. Except the one comet we actually WENT to, which was nothing but a ball of dust. I could go on, but you get the idea.

We think we know everything, yet still don't realize just what kind of herd animal we really are. Kids pop on to various forums and chatter excitedly about how one game is copying another. I've seen that sort of thing since the bulletin board days. Little do they know that all they've really done is discover an odd, little truth about themselves.

I like it, it has the potential to branch out and offer some things that Starbound doesn't have (yes, it's true, Starbound doesn't have everything). If it has some fun and unique features it'll be a nice alternative to Starbound.

  19. Adinxs

Its looks like a more realistic, (In a sense of the word) alternative for a space game.
    Look forward to playing it.

This is ridiculous if you think they copied Starbound.
